William Mahlon Byland founded the Pennsylvania State Chess Federation in 1939, and was the state champion in 1949. He was a USCF Vice-President. In 1961, Byland won the Pittsburgh Championship.

  GrahamClayton: Byland founded the Pennsylvania State Chess Federation in 1939, and was the State Champion in 1949. A memorial tournament at the Pittsburgh Chess Club to honour Byland is held every year.
