Penguincw: To quote someone, MVL vs. MVP of 1990.

< Classical games: Magnus Carlsen beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave 4 to 1, with 7 draws. >

When Vachier-Lagrave has white, he's +1,-1,=3.

This isn't the first time these 2 met in R1 of a major tournament, with <cg> broadcasting this game: M Vachier-Lagrave vs Carlsen, 2014.

That game ended in a draw, and so did their previous meeting with this colour (Norway, M Vachier-Lagrave vs Carlsen, 2015), so that's my prediction for this game: a draw.

Oh, and earlier on the Grand tour, Carlsen beat MVL with white in St. Louis: Carlsen vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2015.

M Vachier-Lagrave vs Carlsen, 2011 This was the initial trick, but the second follows quick...

Dec-04-15  Kinghunt: I suspect the outcome of this game depends strongly on which Carlsen shows up in London.
Dec-04-15  Absentee: <Kinghunt: I suspect the outcome of this game depends strongly on which Carlsen shows up in London.>

I believe the invitation is only valid for Magnus Carlsen, not Henrik Carlsen, Ingrid Carlsen or Ellen Carlsen.

Dec-04-15  Sokrates: Chessgames: <Game starts 11:00am USA/Eastern - it is now 8:34am >

I know there are many Americans here, but it would be nice if you also stated the local time - the tournament takes place in Europe, after all. Thanks in advance.

keypusher: <sokrates> In case they don't get around to it, I guess London is five hours ahead of us and Demark is six. So 4 pm London time and 5 pm in Copenhagen.

keypusher: <whiteshark> One of my all-time favorite Carlsen games:

Carlsen vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2015

Not likely to be much of a guide to what happens today though.

Dec-04-15  Sokrates: Thanks, <keypusher>, appreciate.
Dec-04-15  Shams: This is the line that Karpov favored as White, isn't it? Black will get to play ...f5 but once only.

offramp: Black does want to play ...f7-f5 in this variation, and later he wants to play ...f5-f7.
Dec-04-15  Shams: Apologies to Garry, I should have mentioned him first! Kasparov vs Kramnik, 1994

But this is probably closer to what Carlsen is going for. Karpov vs Dolmatov, 1980

Domdaniel: That Nd5 just looks better and better. I don't think it will be enough to win, though.

Dec-04-15  Shams: This is a drawish line going by the statistics but 15...Bb7 has given Black good results here. http://www.365chess.com/opening.php...

Dec-04-15  beenthere240: Carlsen is offering the broken K-side pawns in exchange for the powerful d5 knight. He's also protecting the a pawn, which is probably more valuable.

offramp: Carlsen likes his pawns to be a bit smashed up. He gets lots of play that way.

Domdaniel: 17.Nc3, preserving the knight, has been played in this position.

Domdaniel: Though Black looks a little better after 17.Nc3 Bc6 ...

moronovich: In the Caruana-Aronian game we may also end up with a Sveshnikov-structure though via Ruy Lopez .
