YELENA DEMBO
(born Dec-08-1983, 41 years old) Russia (federation/nationality Greece)

[what is this?]

Yelena Dembo was born in Penza, Russia. At only 3 years and 9 months, she played chess in an under-13 tournament and became rated. When she was 7, her family emigrated to Israel, where her parents opened a chess academy. She was Israeli champion among the girls five times, including once in the category under 20 years. She became a WGM in 2001 and Men's IM in 2003.

She is an eight time medalist of World and European Youth and Women Championships, including winning the first place in Girl's Under 20 European Rapid Championship in 2002. She won the Bykova's Memorial (women's WGM event) in December 2004. She won the bronze medal in Women's European Individual Championship in Moldova 2005 and scored 6.5/11 (TPR 2464) at the 12th European Individual Championship (2011), which included a 4/8 (+2 -2 =4) result against her 8 GM opponents in that event. She qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2012), but lost in the first round to Georgian IM Nino Khurtsidze.

Dembo made her first men's GM norm in the Hamburg open, 2005.

Mar-24-07  Dr.Lecter: <ianD> Short drops by sometimes? That's a surprise.
Apr-18-07  BohdanL: Hi Elena,

have question on your new book on Grunfeld, which will come to the shop in July: what moves order you considered, is it only starting from 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5, or you also look on other moves order, for example 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3, may be also 1.c4 and 1.Nf3? Would you recommend playing Grunfeld as defence for amateur mainly corresponded (internet) chess player? I am looking for opening with dynamic chess to add to my repertoire (till now I do play OID, which is little bit passive).

thanks in advance

Bohdan

May-01-07  Yelena Dembo: <BohdanL > All the main lines are considered there and indeed I would recommend it! I have also refuted many suggestions for the white side from previous books and added many mine!
Jun-03-07  midknightblue: Yelena - Thanks so much for making a new book on the Gruenfeld. I cannot wait to go to Amazon.com, put in the order, and wait for the arrival at my front door! I am very curious about your recommendations on the Bc4 variation. After scouring through Sakaev's great book and after losing a lot of games on the black side, I am trying to decide if I should do like Svidler and bail out from the main variations, or accept that exchange with d5 Bxa1 Qxa1, like I am currently doing (although i have struggled mightily from that position). Anyway, I have sured up my knowledge of those lines and have not given up on it completely yet. Curious as to your recommendations - but no need to tell us - I will get it straight from the book in a few days. If I have any nice wins with your recommended moves may I post the games here? Also, I thought BohdanL asked some great questions. I really like the Gruenfeld, and have been playing it even against 1.c4 and 1. Nf3. I am slowly realizing how complex this is, and the anti-gruenfeld lines are very challenging. I suspect 1. c4 and the anti-gruenfeld lines that may follow are out of the scope of your book. Do you recommend dealing with 1. c4 in another manner, or do you know of a reference book where I can find more info about this. Sorry if any of my questions are too simple - I am only a C class player .....for now :) I plan on changing that in the near future with some hard work. Best of luck in your chess and thx for putting out the gruenfeld book!
Jun-22-07  Yelena Dembo: Hi <midknightblue>,

Thanks for very good words on my book! You are not the first and hopefully not the last one to say them!! The moves like 1.c4 are indeed out of scope of my book but I have signed a contract with Everyman Chess and will start writing a book on this matter soon!

Best wishes,
Yelena

Jul-16-07  engmaster: By crossing paths with Nigel I think the writer was referring to whether in Greece your paths have crossed. Rather then the fact that you have beaten him a few times on ICC. His rating I believe is still over 2650 and yours is still under 2500 for a difference of 150 Elo that should be good for a 60%:40% split or he wins 6 games for every 4 you win
Jul-21-07  engmaster: Yelena, whats your advice on your Grunfeld book for a positional player. Is n't the Grunfeld more for tactical players, or have you taken a more positional repetoire approach? I skimmed through and certainly your book would give a player an International Master level coverage
Aug-15-07  SniperOnKN2: expert at gruenfeld has 4 games, 0 wins. Better off trusting Anderssen's a3.
Aug-28-07  pazzed paun: <Yelena> I hope you and your loved ones have been spared from the recent fires--good luck to all.
Sep-24-07  schnarre: Yes indeed! I hope the flames spared you all!

Congrats on the Grunfeld book (looks to have been very well received thus far), & good luck on your next one as well! ;)

Oct-17-07  Yelena Dembo: Hello everyone!

I am back after building a house of 4 floors and moving into it! Recently I have played in GM event in Corfu finishing on 50% beating GM Shneider on the way! Soon I will go to Crete to play on 1st board in women's European team championship!

Talk to you later!
Yelena

Oct-17-07  dx9293: Congratulations, Yelena!

You probably don't remember me, but you sent me your first two books last summer and I love them!

Now I want to see you get to 2500 and get those three GM norms! Easy but nice! :-)

Oct-17-07  whiteshark: <Yelena>, wasn't Corfu a nice tournament (location, atmosphere), nevertheless? At least I saw you smiling at one point. http://chessbase.de/2007/korfu/Bild...

Impressive pictures http://chessbase.de/nachrichten.asp...

Good luck for you and your team on Crete!! :D

Oct-17-07  Yelena Dembo: Thanks <dx9293>:-) I need only 2 GM norms though as I already have one:-)
Oct-17-07  Yelena Dembo: <whiteshark > It was anyway a very good event and I played very well there. Even beat a strong GM!
Oct-17-07  dx9293: Oops, sorry! I forgot that you already had one!
Dec-07-07  schnarre: <Yelena Dembo> Any future events on the horizon?
