CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. Jan-19-05  yoozum: Does anybody want to see a bio for Beer?
Jan-19-05  Akavall: There is what I know...

Some sources say the earliest beer was brewed about 9000 BC somewhere in middle east.

One of the theories on how beer was invented was that somebody left a piece of bread in the water and it turned into something like beer...

Jan-19-05  yoozum: "Good player."
Jan-21-05  Backward Development: "99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer, take one down, pass it around, I'm gonna be on someone's ignore list!"

Gregor:
LOL!

Jan-21-05  yoozum: I know this probably isn't a great idea, but I'm somewhat aching to do this. Sorry CG.com, but I'd like to add a short bio to Beer's page. I hope you don't mind :-)

Benzol: <yoozum> I thought you were going to give us the history of brewing! LOL. :)
Jan-21-05  Akavall: You can add this to the bio

Its really about wine, but applies to beer as well.

tpstar: I'm not a big fan of freshness dating, but I refuse to drink any Beer over 10,000 years old.

Surely <mack> can critique the bio. ;>D

Jan-22-05  yoozum: Enjoy the bio while it lasts folks. I have a feeling CG.com will remove it tomorrow.
Jan-22-05  Akavall: Does it violate any of the 4 rules?
Jan-22-05  yoozum: No, but I'm sure CG.com doesn't want a joke bio. I don't want to seem like I'm already abusing this privilege. But Beer is somewhat of a joke player, so who knows?
Jan-22-05  dac1990: I changed the bio around as to make it a little more CG-friendly.
Jan-22-05  Phoenix: <1000!>

Drinks on me everyone! Just keep the tab under $20, please....

Jan-22-05  yoozum: <Knight>, come join us on the Corus page, unless you're already there.

tpstar: <Phoenix> Congratulations on batting 1000! Since you're still a youngster, have A Root Beer while us elder statesmen enjoy your $20 worth of fine libations.
Jan-23-05  dac1990: <A Root Beer> I thought that kibitzing couldn't sink to that pun, but it has. I'll enjoy MY root beer, thank you, but not as much now. Shame, shame.
Jan-27-05  yoozum: Has anyone here tried Corona? My friends and I are having a party to celebrate the conclusion of midyears, and thus the de facto end of the relevance of grades.

Some of my friends will probably bring "herbal refreshments" but I'd actually rather just put in a beer order, so I guess I'm here on the Beer page asking for some advice. (I was thinking of going with Corona...)

(I hope this isn't violating posting guideline #4...)

Jan-27-05  dac1990: Hey, beer is certainly allowed by US law. The sale, use, and advertisement of illegal drugs, however, is illegal. Therefore, you might be inadvertently advertising for the use of "herbal refreshments", unless you are referring to tea.
Jan-27-05  Dillinger: I got 3 words for you <yoozum>. Newcastle Brown Ale. Can't go wrong!
Jan-27-05  Akavall: <yoozum>This really depends on what you like and on what you friends like. So something like Pilsner Urquell, would be kinda risky, because some people can't drink it for some reason.

I think Harp Lager is best for its price, not counting the domestics (if you count that as beer ;). Grocery stores usually have those in 12 packs. I think its fairly likable for everybody.

Warsteiner is good too I am not sure if grocery stores have it though.

I don't know about where you live, but if you can go to a big store that sells just beer (like Greens, I am not sure how big they are), you get a lot bigger selection at a lot better price than a grocery store.

Jan-27-05  tud: Guys, in North America u dont make good beer. Sorry 4 u. No beer, no chocolate.
Jan-27-05  SBC: Corona extra is ok - pretty standard fare and inexpensive. Newcastle is possibly one of the best beers out of England though the Irish stout, Guiness, is one of my traditional beers of choice. I think the Australian beer, Foster, is a great modest-priced beer.

In contrast, I feel sorry for <tud> because he's too immersed in his personal fiction to accept the reality that the North America makes many great beers.

One of best brewers in the world is Rogue brewery out of Oregon - http://www.rogue.com/brews.html

Anchor brewing out of San Francisco also makes great beer/ale - http://www.anchorbrewing.com/
