CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. Oct-10-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: Beer (0,5L) in better Slovenian pubs costs about 1,50€ - 2,00 € (t.i. 2,10$ - 2,80$).

How are other places faring?

Oct-10-07  schnarre: <WannaBe> Have you tried the dreaded 1. a3 yet?

  WannaBe: <schnarre> No. And I don't think I am going to. =)

<Autoreparaturwerkbau> In/around Long Beach, California, your American brews (Budweiser/light, Coors/light, Miller/lite) can run you $4.00 for 16oz bottle.

For a bottle of 12oz Becks, Heineken, etc.. are usually around $4.00 too.

They may be a little cheaper around smaller neighborhood bars, instead of night-clubs or popular hang-outs.

Oct-10-07  Akavall: In Columbia, SC

In a specialized store (In regular grocery store prices on import beer are higher, would guess 20%): 12 pack of 12 oz Pilsner Urquell is $11.99, prices for other import beer is around that, though they get more expensive (per bottle) in smaller quantities, say 6 pack.

In a bar: pint(0.473 L) of import beer is $3.50 to $4.25.

Prices on quality domestic beer are about the same as they are on imports. Prices on the mainstream beer significantly lower, but I don't know, since I don't drink it :).

Oct-10-07  technical draw: In Las Vegas the beer is FREE! As long as you're playing the slots that is.
Oct-11-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: Sheesh, impressive prices!

If i am not too curious then, what's the price of a Big Mac there? It is (2,20€) 3,10$ here.

I am asking cos i wonder whether the whole price-level is higher or just Beer in a pub.

Oct-11-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: Btw: A 0,5L Beer (say Guinness or Heineken) in Slovenia's regular grocery stores costs about 0,90€ (0,63$). The price is obviously tripled in better pubs.
Oct-11-07  whiteshark: <Autoreparaturwerkbau <costs about 0,90€ (0,63$)>> ??? Today 1 Euro is worth 1,42 USD
Oct-11-07  Akavall: I would guess that prices anywhere in the US are higher than they are in Slovenia, just a guess. I don't know how much Big Mac costs here though.

It would be nice to hear from Irish, Dutch, Germans or Czechs on the prices of their beer at home.

Oct-11-07  Autoreparaturwerkbau: <whiteshark> Oops, my bad. 0,90€ must be multiplied with 1,42, not divided, of course. So, 0,90€ equals 1,28$. Must have drunk too much beer, eh :)

Thanks for correcting me.

Oct-11-07  porgue: < technical draw: <porque> You actually read 177 pages of Beer Kibitzing? Porqúe? >

how could i resist?...:)

Oct-11-07  NakoSonorense: Regardless of the price, we will keep buying more and more BEER!

By the way, beer in Mexico is cheaper than in the US. I don't remember the exact price, but it is cheaper.

Oct-12-07  kellmano: <Nako>

Disgracefully enough, alcohol consumption in the UK is in decline. I blame the youth of today, as i certainly try to do my bit to keep the average respectable.

Oct-12-07  NakoSonorense: <kellmano> That's a shame. If that trend continues, one day the UK will be a sad, sad place.

Keep up the good work, though!

Oct-12-07  Legend: It`s my birthday today! Everyone gets a free beer!
Oct-12-07  QuidProQuo: <By the way, beer in Mexico is cheaper than in the US. I don't remember the exact price, but it is cheaper.>

US or Mexico, who would dare to drink beer in any of those places?

Oct-16-07  schnarre: Aye! The REAL brew is in the Great White North!!
