CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success.   HeMateMe: I'd like...one of everything....

During WWII the Germans in P.O.W. camps in the United States brought their beer making skills over on the prisoner transports. They made beer from potatos, in the prison kitchens. Some people thought that the prisoners of war here under the Geneva Convention, were eating better than we citizens were, hampered by rationing and the war effort (something the British know something about).

I guess the camp authorities here turned a blind eye to the beer making. A drunk German is less likely to escape than a sober one.

Oct-20-10  whiteshark: Well ya see, Norm*, it’s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. So when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

The human brain works that way too. It only operates as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. So, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few Beer s.

HeMateMe: Has anyone tried that <"Four Loco"> beer yet? They are trying to ban it here in NYC, becasuse it is a favorite of the college crowd and underage drinkers. The beer is fruit flavored (cherry, lemonade, etc...), a big load of caffeine, and more than 2X the alcohol of domestic USA beers. I've tried it, thinking the fruit flavors might make it go down nicely, but the beer is ruined by all the extra alcohol, bad taste. It's like someone dumped a bunch of grain alcohol into a glass of lemonade. I drink beer for the taste, not to get drunk (i hope that doesn't leave me in a minority here).

Best lite beer--<Bud lite lime>

Best full beer--<St. Pauli Girl>, German recipe, hmmmmm!

HeMateMe: heheehheheh....ok, Bluto. each to his own....I just remember my 3 years as a sophomore, so I can understand why the colleges want to keep the kids away from this stuff. It's sold in 24 ounce cans. I tried one on the way home from work this summer, sitting in a subway car. I drank the whole thing, and started to hallucinate.
Nov-06-10  Jim Bartle: Seriously, it sounds terrible.
Nov-06-10  Akavall: That stuff must give an awful hangover!
