CHESSGAMES - BEER

[what is this?]

Beer is believed to be over 10,000 years old. Although no one knows its exact origins, some agricultural historians believe that the first beer may have been produced accidentally when a stash of grain was soaked by rain and then warmed by the sun. If this mixture were spontaneously fermented by wild, airborne yeast—which thrives in just these warm, moist conditions—beer would have been produced (Encarta).

Fermented beverages have been preferred over water throughout the ages: they are safer, provide psychotropic effects, and are more nutritious. Some have even said alcohol was the primary agent for the development of Western civilization, since more healthy individuals (even if inebriated much of the time) lived longer and had greater reproductive success. Dec-01-04  Shadout Mapes: I can't imagine playing fantastic chess drunk. Buzzed, maybe, but not wasted. But hey, if Alekhine could do it...

And I do think <mack> has a point about the propaganda spoon-fed to children about drugs. While I understand the anti-drug sentiment in schools, kids aren't taught to discriminate against different drugs (IE heroin and marijuana are both treated as equally harmful). I was only part of the DARE program for a year (in the 5th grade) and I don't remember much, but I do remember being taught that smoking weed and drinking beer would make you a social outcast and cause you to fail all of your classes.

The problem with this is that when a naive kid enters the real world, it's a slight reality shock to find that many middle/high schoolers do smoke weed, drink marijuana, and have sex, and most of these people are not going to grow up to be child molestors, murderers, and bums.

I'm not condoning any of this, but kids should be aware. They should be taught to make a conscious descision not to partake in illegal activities. Pancreatitus (sp?) runs in my family. Earlier this year my father was in excruciating pain for about 6 straight days, unable to eat or sleep, barely even move due to pain. Eventually he had to be hospitalized for about a month, got his pancreas removed (getting slight pnemonia in the process), lost over 20 pounds, and now can never drink again. Watching him go through this (as well as an earlier experience where my sister and I had to carry him to bed and clean up his vomit while he was inebriated) isn't going to prevent me from ever drinking, but it will prevent me from drinking in excess.

<Knight13>, people don't like to be told what to do. Chill out.

tpstar: <Shadout Mapes> Best wishes to your father, and to your family. Some of life's lessons come hard.
Dec-01-04  yoozum: yes, i also agree with <mack> and <shadeout maps>. i have several friends who are frequent users of marijuana and who drink, yet they are extremely bright, get top grades, and generally do very well in school. this isn't some sort of dummy school either, my town has one of the best schools in the state.

is there a lot of anti-drug propaganda? yes, absolutely. alcohol and drugs make you "feel good". <knight13>, as much as you may think you know about the perils of drugs/drinking, i can assure you, most users here probably know a bit more, as they've most likely been exposed to it more than a 13 year old has. also, they, as we can see, didn't take too kindly to having a middle-schooler lecture them about what to do/not do. it's almost like having sergey karjakin teach garry kasparov how to play the sicilian.

Dec-01-04  iron maiden: I do think we should give Knight13 a break, though. At his age I was just as determined to abstain from alcohol and marijuana, and while I'm certainly not dependant onn either of them, I can't say that I've been completely faithful to that vow. It really sounds easy to stay away from drinking and drugs--until you hit high school and "everyone else" is doing it.
Dec-01-04  Minor Piece Activity: Yeah I agree, just go easy on him, he's just a little kid. ;) Plus it's not true that he's brainwashed. He said that it will probably kill you only if you get addicted. Moderate use is ok. My father drinks the recommended half glass a day for health (blood circulation.)
Dec-01-04  von schlepstein: Drinking might make you an alcoholic, sex might give you AIDS, eating a tasty diet might give you a heart attack, sunbathing might give you skin cancer . . . all fun kills. I'm so depressed I'm going to commit suicide. How? BY HAVING FUN!!
Dec-01-04  Knight13: <<Knight13>, people don't like to be told what to do. Chill out.> YOu must be wrong. I am not telling people what to do. I am telling people suggestions. If they want to use drugs, I don't care. They make up their way, I make up my way. I'm me, they are them.
Dec-01-04  Shadout Mapes: <Did you guys know that there's Alcohol in beer that damages your brain? If so, quit before you became an alcoholic!>

<So if you are not a drug user, never use them. Even if your life is really terrible and want to die.>

<If you like alcohol, it's okay. But don't drink it a lot. When you became a psychological dependence person, you'll never stop it. So drink like one bottle in 3 days, and I believe you are okay. Only for those who knows what ALCOHOL is.>

A single post offering your disapproval is fine, but don't be pushy. People in general dislike being told what's bad for them, especially drunks.

Dec-01-04  von schlepstein: I'm having fun right now. I hope to have more fun in the near future.

Sneaky: I've yet to stop in here, so now's as good a time as any. No special occasion. Not my birthday. Not my 10,000th post. So what's on tap? Darts, anyone?

By the way, you know why Corona is like making love in a canoe? Because it's ... er, aw shucks this is a family site.

Dec-02-04  von schlepstein: I'm American so I know about the canoe joke. My next swig will not be next to water.
Dec-02-04  yoozum: <Corona is like making love in a canoe>

10 yard penalty for verbal content unsuitable for family sites.

Dec-02-04  MoonlitKnight: I didn't know Beer was a family site. At least not a family drink.
Dec-02-04  yoozum: ah, nevermind. it was part of a t.v. commercial.

Benzol: Can I be a member of Sneaky's Darts Club Band?
Dec-02-04  suenteus po 147: <Benzol>, that's a good one!
Dec-04-04  Knight13: People who really likes beers should celebrate with a glass of Large Beer!
Dec-04-04  DanielBryant: Odd, I just kibitzed on one of Large's games before coming here.
Dec-04-04  Phoenix: I'll still be underage when I get to my 1000 post, so I'll have to settle for A Root Beer.

tpstar: <Knight13> Did you know that there's Alcohol in Beer that damages your brain? If so, quit before you became an alcoholic! If you are already an alcoholic and want to stop, call now on 1-800-DRUNK13 for free information about how to stop beening an alcoholic! Alcohol can kill you or even makes you "down" for up 10 years sleeping. If you drink alcohol for years, you can have psychological defendence. When you become a psychological defendence person, you'll never stop it. So drink like 3 bottles in 1 day and I believe you are okay. Only for those who knows what ALCOHOL is.

I am not telling people what to do. I am telling people suggestions.

Dec-04-04  Pawsome: Who was it that said, "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.?"
Dec-04-04  Pawsome: The message is, if you're gonna drink beer, at least let it B. Light Beer. E-Z Search "light" ---Bottoms up!

Do you all know that famous quote,
"If I had all the money I've spent on drink... I'd spend it on drink".

tpstar: <offramp> Congratulations! Of course, you might have made it here earlier, except for those two choice items that got deleted (the bawdy fart joke and that racy tattoo picture). Classic material, yet gone forever. ;>)
