Jun-13-06  mack: <The "Gormally Incident" even made a topic of conversation on "Have I Got News For You" in england last night. Jack Dee's line was something like "Gormally tried to attack his opponent, but was unable to because he could only move diagonally.">

I usually avoid HIGNFY like the plague these days, as it's just godawful television, but I did tune in this week to see how they'd cover the Gormally stuff (if at all). As expected, very, very lame indeed; believe it or not, the show DID do it a lot better once upon a time (about ten years ago, that is).

Can anyone remember how they dealt with Kasparov-Short, or was it off air then?

Jun-13-06  SickedChess: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/spor... "Indeed, as has been widely reported elsewhere, the first upset occurred on the eve of the rest day itself at the 'Bermuda Party', when Danny Gormally took exception to the Armenian top board Lev Aronian dancing with a young Australian girl, Arianne Caoili, and knocked him over. Aronian is probably the most popular sportsman in Armenia and the next day when Gormally was spotted with us at a cafe, an Armenian came and thumped him. Happily, neither player was badly hurt and the incident is now closed: though Gormally himself decided to go home the next day."
Jun-13-06  SickedChess: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

"Gormally's action was fairly harmless, but he had violated one of the basic laws of nature and evolution, which says: never attack an Armenian. Immediately a random countryman of Aronian, whom we shall call GM X (and who happens to be a reserve player on the US team, rated 2575), rushed forward with murder in his eyes. Figuratively speaking, we believe" This GM X is Varuzhan Akobian

Jun-13-06  Runemaster: <AdrianP: In the chessbase article, listed under Caolli's likes are "dwarfs"!! No wonder Aronian was in there!!> LOL
Jun-13-06  Maatalkko: I, for one, feel genuinely sorry for this guy. Who can blame him from falling in love with Caolli? Haven't we all done something like that at some point?

Of course, at age 30 he should be beyond that. But still, all of this coverage depicting him as a chess-geek-turned-pugilist, must make him feel like a colossal loser, even if it does bring him his proverbial "15 minutes". I don't think he's a loser at all; he's just a mid-level grandmaster who struggles against himself and circumstances to succeed at chess. That's not a loser in my book.

Jun-13-06  alicefujimori: <Maatalkko><Haven't we all done something like that at some point?>He can be forgiven if he was still a teenager. But as a mature adult with the age of 30, there is just no excuse for such rude behaviour. Gormally did tried to blame some of it on the drinks, but he still needs to take responsibilities for his actions.

Anyway, I think he has already got what he deserved with the world-wide bad coverage, etc. It's really time to call it an end.

Jun-13-06  Maatalkko: <alicefujimori> Point taken, I suppose Gormally should be censured for being so immature at age 30. I'm several years younger than Gormally, so at my age I can empathize with his feeling of spontaneous love for Caolli, but I suppose he should know better by now. And his violent behavior is inexcusable as well. Don't worry Alice, I'll give it a rest.
Jun-13-06  Akavall: <Gormally did tried to blame some of it on the drinks...>

In that case, how about his punishment be: no more drinks for Gormally.

Jun-14-06  Chesschatology: La Belle Damme Sans Gormally

Oh what ails ye, Danny Gormally
Alone and pailey loitering,
All your pawns are isolated
And have left your King

Oh what ails ye, our Board 6,
So bruised and now so disinclined,
The Najdorf has lost its tricks,
And the gambits are declined,

I see a bruise upon thy brow,
With imprints of an Armenian brute,
And thy ELO rating proud,
Fast withereth too.

I met a lady on the net,
Fit as they come, chess-player too,
Her almond eyes, her rose-bud lips,
Painted my heart a deeper blue.

I sent her witty e-mails,
And emoticons, and e-cards too,
And she replied on MSN,
And sometimes on Yahoo,

She found me end-game studies,
And a novelty from a new CD,
And sure in language Anitpodean she said,
“Nc4 x Bc3”.

I went to the Olympiad,
And there we cast sly flitting glance,
Across the hoards of chequered boards
And prepared for after-party dance.

And there I bought many a drink,
And becoming drunk- Oh woe betide!
The last drink I shall ever drink,
(In that last line I have lied).

I saw Arianne, and Aronian too!
Dancing a Tango, hip pressed to thigh!
I cried “Yer bastard, I’ll clock you one!”
And punched him in the eye.

I was restrained by Seirawan,
And subsequently taken home,
The next day in a small café,
Punched by an ally of that gnome.

And that is why I sojourn here,
Alone in Durham loitering,
All my pawns are isolated,
And I have given up my King.

Jun-14-06  monad: I loved reading about it but admit that I don't see what the fuss is about.

What Gormally did <away from the board> is what lots of football players do <on the pitch> itself. (Just as well we don't have female referees yet.)

When these punch-ups start happening while chess matches are in progress, then a red/yellow card system is called for. But until then what a chessplayer or footballer does away from the game is their own business.

Chess hooligans, (and from Britain of course, sigh,) are no worse than footie hooligans, whether fans or players. The fact that they arouse interest is bizarre.

Jun-14-06  Chess Classics: <monad> Agreed. Too bad that this is the coverage that the olympiad is getting. I wish we had some sort of promotion outside of "brawls".

And for chrissake, the guy's name is NOT "chess brawl man" but "Daniel Gormally." Remember that.

Regards,
CC

Was that last paragraph also aimed at me???

Jun-15-06  independentthinker: Someone should set the press up with another chess incident which is totally faked, and then get a laugh over the press afterwards plus get some great publicity.

How about 'Chess Brawl Man in Voodoo Curse claim' hehe

Or how about two fake lesbian chess players (hired supermodels who have nothing to do with chess) laid out on a big chess board for promotion shoot (Actually my wife's prediction of where the 'temptress' will end up)

Jun-15-06  Chess Classics: <Was that last paragraph also aimed at me???> Heavens, no! It was aimed at the whatever columnist gave him that name. Sorry mate! =)

CC

Keats was Gormallized somewhat by Fanny Brawne, if I remember.

it's true it's not as good as it was, but it's still better than 90 percent of tv at the moment. Bring back Angus Deayton!

xenophon: The BCM website is saying he is taking anti-depressants-that would tie up with the personal demons Short mentioned-combined with one over the eight you might see how he lost his rag.Shame for Aronian he didn't lose his aim as well.

Ere we were grown so sadly wise,

keypusher: That's pretty, what is it called? Who wrote it?
Jun-16-06  mack: Lord Lytton, I believe.
Jun-20-06  mack: Gormallygate is clearing taking effect in The Times - its 'People' column today had a picture of Carmen Kass at a chessboard. Sexy chess ladies are 'in'.
Jul-10-06  AdrianP: Gormally's back in action in a South Wales tournament http://www.southwaleschess.co.uk/SWI/
