Mar-20-03 | | atripodi: Duncan Suttles is one of my favorite players and one of the most original Grandmasters of all time. His play was typified by the fianchetto of the king's bishop as white or black and the frequent move of the knight to h3 or h6. He was quite possibly the most hypermodern of all masters and doesn't get anywhere near the respect he deserves. |
Mar-21-03 | | kostich in time: Whatever happened to Suttles?I read somewhere that he became an investment banker in Vancouver |
Mar-22-03 | | atripodi: yeah, there's an interview with him online (i don't have the link onhand, search under google) where he talks about his new company and why he gave up chess. |
Jul-17-03 | | refutor: does anyone know what period suttles was at his strongest? |
Jul-17-03
 | | Honza Cervenka: I guess it was the first half of 1970s. |
Nov-04-03 | | karnak64: I loved this guy's games -- so quirky. I heard once that he had no chess books around the house (given his opening repertoire, I suppose he didn't need many); mostly he just played and studied games. I wonder if it's true. I remember routinely picking up Informants in the mid-70s, though, and he'd always show up in the A00's. How'd he win so much with the King's fianchetto and 1. a3 and such? As I look back at his games, he could be quite a swashbuckler -- getting unbelievable attacks out of supposedly quiet, positional openings. Clearly, worthy of wider recognition. |
Nov-04-03 | | Benjamin Lau: This guy and Tony Miles are one of a kind. |
Nov-05-03 | | Resignation Trap: By "quirky", did you mean a game like this:
L Barczay vs Suttles, 1967
As a note to the end of this game, Robert G. Wade wrote: "Any resemblance between a Suttles game and any other game, past, present or future, is the unlikeliest coincidence. |
Nov-06-03 | | karnak64: Yes -- exactly.
"though this be madness, yet there is method in't."
Maybe I'll start a Duncan Suttles fan club. |
Nov-06-03 | | seoulmama: The first time I heard of this guy Suttles was when I was reading Speelman's Modern Defence. There was a move, Nh6, that was " the move of the great Canadian eccentric, Duncan Suttles.". After that I have tried to find his games annotated, alas, in vain. Nevertheless, he should be more respected. Thumbs up. |
Nov-06-03 | | Malacha: <Seoulmama> I've got some lightly annotated games that Suttles played from 72-74.I don't know if it'd be good to post them here, due to the space they might take up,but if you want to see them and think it'd be okay to post them,I'd be glad to. |
Nov-06-03 | | refutor: <seoulmama> i believe a book is in the works on him by a canadian FM...i will post details here as i get them ;) <malacha> i'd be interested as well...if they're too big to put here, please email me then : craigsadler@hotmail.com here's an interview with suttles from 1994 http://www.chess.bc.ca/suttles.html |
Nov-10-03 | | karnak64: Refutor, thanks for the link to the interview. It explains a lot -- especially why Suttles' opponents so frequently played cautiously against his flank openings. This man knew his business. I hope to see the book in my lifetime ... |
Mar-14-04 | | Airlock: It would be interesting if Suttles played a match against Michael Basman. Who could imagine what would happen on the board... |
Mar-15-04 | | karnak64: Yes, Airlock, that match would be interesting. My bet: they'd both go for a main line of the Ruy Lopez to take each other out of book! |
Mar-15-04 | | Airlock: Heh heh, and if they played random chess theyd probably get the starting position of classic chess. |
Mar-19-04 | | arthur nugent: Regarding the book on Suttles,it is supposedly finished says author,Bruce Harper.Whenever it sees the
light of day is anybody's
guess.I wrote a letter to Duncan Suttles asking him to enclose some games that were
representative of his style. He copied out 3 games in English
descriptive notation! Wish he was active in chess tournament
play again. One thing for sure he would not have to review the latest opening theory. He has his own.Duncan Suttles'Chess Openings, that would make an interesting book! |
Mar-19-04 | | Benjamin Lau: <.Duncan Suttles'Chess Openings, that would make an interesting book! > It would probably also be pretty short... Every other page would have the concluding sentence: "make it up." ;-) |
Mar-29-04 | | Vischer: Ben, you said suttles and miles are one of a kind. Shouldn't that be two of a kind? |
Mar-30-04 | | ruylopez900: Duncan Suttles is great. makes me proud to be a Canucker. He owned Larsen (+3=2-0) and was an original soul. Definitely the essence of chess. |
Apr-04-04 | | arthur nugent: Hello Canadians!
Does anyone know if Suttles will ever play OTB again.
Rumors?
A.Nugent |
Apr-04-04 | | refutor: he did play some bughouse recently ;) http://bug.chessbc.com/tourn001x.html |
Jul-11-04 | | Checkmate Kramer: Wow! It's great to read that the book on Duncan Suttles may be finished. Please keep me posted; I love his games.
For more information on Suttles, you may consult Stephan Gerzadowicz's two books: Journal of a Chess Master & Journal of a Chess Original. |
Jul-16-04 | | Lawrence: GMs Suttles, Seirawan, Cramling and Bellón recently played some "pairs" games http://www.chessbc.com/reports.html |
Jul-16-04 | | seoulmama: refutor and Malacha, I would appreciate if you could do that. I am sorry to answer so late, but I forgot about the subject for a while :-) |
