Re your comments on 1/13/06 in The Kibitzer's Cafe about words, etymologies, and definitions: anyone worth his salt will know the older, archaic meaning of the word "conversation". AO |

Jan-15-06 | | brankat: <Eric Schiller> Re.: Your posting of photos of Bjelica & many others on Tal'page. I thank You very much Sir. I've placed my reply/comment on Tal's site (p.40). It is somewhat lengthy, so I'm not repeating it here. Thank You! |

Jan-17-06 | | gus inn: <Eric> hope youre enjoying Corus !..So am I , but it is hard upon the nerves
when you cheer for Ivanchuk :)
And now my question : what do you think about the gambit 1. d4,f5 2.g4 !?... Because the more I think about it , the more reasonable it seems to me.E.g 2. fxe4.3.Nc3 (!)-e6.4.
h3(!),g3.5fxg3 and everything seems open.
So I dont really get it , why it is“nt
played at higher levels.Hence any opinion upon this gambit would be appreciated. |
|
Jan-17-06 | | schnarre: <gus inn> Haven't seen that one before, but if you want to give it a go by all means do so. After 3. Nc3 I wold be more inclined to play 3...Nf6 rather than go pawn grabbing, & after 4. h3 d5 looks good. I could be completely off, but that's my 2 cents. Keep us posted! |

 | | IMlday: Cheering for Ivanchuk is good exercise!
The heart rate goes up and down! |
|
Jan-17-06
 | | Eric Schiller: <gus inn> I play it this way: 1.d4 f5 2.Qd3!? e6 3.g4, with the option of playing e4 against moves like 2...g6. I have always enjoyed the line, and consider it one of several effective lines against 1...f5. I play the Dutch, but start with 1...d5, ...e6, ...c6 to get there safely. |
|
Jan-17-06 | | refutor: <eric schiller> what is your opinion on korchnoi's 1.d4 f5 2.h3?! |
|
Jan-17-06
 | | Eric Schiller: <refutor>That's another fun line. |
|
Jan-18-06 | | Akavall: When I used to play 1.d4, I always replied to 1...f5 with 2. e4, and I got what I wanted. However, it seems that there were a lot of fun lines I was missing, in fact I didn't even consider them! |
|
Jan-18-06 | | schnarre: 2...Nf6 looks good as a second move for Black still, but as for a third move any suggestions aside from 3...d5?
Comments? |
|
Jan-18-06 | | Akavall: Btw, what about 1. f4 g5!?, seems quite reasonable, any thoughts on this? |
|
Jan-18-06
 | | Eric Schiller: <Akavall> In Unorthodox Chess Openings I wrote: "The Hobbs Gambit is motivated by the reeasonable success White has with an early g4 against the Dutch Defense. Here, however, Black is a tempo down and has not established a pawn in the center. This allows White to employ a strategy which is not as effective with colors reversed." I stand by those words, and the suggestion that 2.fxg5 h6 be met by 3.g6! fxg6 4.e3, with Black's kingside a mess. |
|
Jan-18-06 | | refutor: another line i play as often as i can as black is 1.g4 Nf6!? the alekhine v. the grob. if 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Ng8!? is playable then 1.g4 Nf6 2.g5 Ng8 must be winning for black ;) in all the times i've played it though white has never responded with 2.g5 so i'm not sure if i would try moving my knight back to g8 or not |
|
Jan-18-06 | | Akavall: <Eric Schiller> I see, weak g6-pawn appears to be a real headache for black. Thanks. |

 | | Oginschile: <Eric Schiller> I recently started playing chess at www.chess.ac
I haven't been able to get on the site today. A site says the domain is not being used. Did something happen with the site? Do you know if it's up or will be up again shortly? I'm sorry to ask this question here, but I can't seem to find any information on it or why it isn't available. |
|
Jan-19-06
 | | Eric Schiller: <Oginschile>This has happened before. It means that one of their software tweaks has brought down the whole domain. www.chess.ac will likely re-appear tomorrow. |
|
Jan-19-06
 | | Oginschile: <Schiller> Thank you. I've really enjoyed it. |
|
Jan-19-06 | | brankat: <Eric Schiller> I understand You will be going to Gibraltar soon, to work
at GibTel. I'm sure You'll have a great time.
A couple of questions:
a) Any predictions re: the tournament outcome?
b) While in Gibraltar, would You still be posting on this site, at least occasionally? It would be awsome to have "live" observations/comments from Gibraltar.
All the best to You. |
|
Jan-19-06
 | | Eric Schiller: <brankat> No predictions, I have no interest in such things. I expect Shirov will play exciting chess, but in a Swiss system results are unpredictable, and frankly, I find these predictions tiresome. As an arbiter, I don't wager on chess events, so there is no reason to make predictions anyway. I would prefer Chessgames to make separate pages for predictions, rather than clutter up event coverage pages with such stuff. Assuming I have access to the Internet, I will post daily on the tournament page. Hopefully the event will produce great games and a bit of good gossip! |
|
Jan-19-06 | | schnarre: <Eric Schiller> It should! |
|
Jan-19-06 | | brankat: <Eric Schiller> <No predictions..> Thank You, Sir, for your reply. I agree with You, re: predictions.
Hopefully, You will have access to the Net. Am looking forward to Your posts from Gibraltar. |

 | | chessgames.com: <I would prefer Chessgames to make separate pages for predictions, rather than clutter up event coverage pages with such stuff.> We did! See the chessforums, esp. cu8sfan chessforum. Now if we can just get people to actually use them... |
|
Jan-20-06
 | | Eric Schiller: <chessgames> Maybe some code searching for "my predictions" could reroute them the the appropriate pages? By the way, GIBTEL Masters starts next week, but I'll be arriving Sunday and can start the coverage if the page is up. I haven't figured out how to search for a tournament page using the search form. How do we do it? |
|
Jan-20-06
 | | chessgames.com: Hi Eric, we can put that page up. For new tournaments just look at the left sidebar on the homepage. For older tournaments (2001-2005) check the link "new games" at the bottom which takes you here: New Games Page We're developing a system so that tournaments can be selected in the advanced search, e.g. find all Russian games played at Dortmund 2004, and so forth. |

Jan-20-06 | | Gypsy: <Eric Schiller: ... I'll be arriving Sunday and can start the coverage if the page is up.> It is great you are doing this! Your journalistic efforts will be eagerly awaited. |
