Jun-06-06  notyetagm: <cotdt> So wouldn't this mean that Hiarcs is best at classical time controls and worst at bullet/blitz?
Jun-06-06  Xaurus: <notyetagm>

I have used the Hiarcs X50 for about a week now, bought the package around that time. I am not very impressed by it yet, but alas I have only run it through blitz tournaments. It is weaker than Hiarcs 10 in blitz.

I am running a complete tournament now, group 1 is over halfway. Hiarcs X50 will also participate, among 23 other engines.

If you want to follow the progress, turn here:

Jun-06-06  notyetagm: <Xaurus> Thanks. I just really like the cool name, Hiarcs <X50>.

Jun-10-06  Xaurus: <notyetagm>

I'm running a computer engine tournament now, with non-blitz time-controls, and Hiarcs X50 won group 2 in a very convincing way.

Jun-10-06  cotdt: Very interesting work Xaurus! I'm glad you're running this tournament!

However, we can't really say one engine is better than another only because it wins engine wars. To win engine wars, the two most important factors are depth of calculation and endgame play (not tablebases, but endgames where there are still 10-18 peices on the board). The endgame is where chess engines are still far weaker than a GM who is not in time trouble. A GM may say a certain engine is completely winning against another engine during middle game, but the losing engine often ends up winning due to better endgame knowledge and calculation depth. Needless to say, in human games where middlegame positional play is super-important, it is no surprise that the "strongest" chess engines often spit out nonsensical moves, or a drawish move even though a different move is winning.

This is why we also need to manually evaluate an engine's moves to determine how good it is. I just got Hiarcs 10 and Rybka, and these engines also play the best positionally out of all chess engines. Unfortunately, positional play is almost worthless in engine-engine matches.

Jun-10-06  Xaurus: <cotdt>

You are correct. However, I don't stand a chance vs. most engines. And you can see different playing styles when evaluating the engines. Feel free to discuss further in my own chessforum. :)

Jun-15-06  notyetagm: <Xaurus> Wow, I see that in Quarter 2 of your torunament that the Peter 1.0 Alpha engine beat Fruit 2.2.1 4-0!

chessgames.com: <iWaNnAbAgM> <fevered cheek> I'm sorry, you can't use the Kibitzer's Corner for the purpose of playing chess like this. It creates too much clutter and makes it impossible to use this page for what it was intended, the discussion of the HIARCS computer software.

The one exception is that user's Chessforums (a premium feature; see Premium Membership Help Page) can be used for this purpose, as they are privately contained and moderated.

I'm going to clean up all of your posts but I'll do you the courtesy of leaving the final move and board position so you can finish your game elsewhere.

Aug-03-06  fevered cheek: ok cg, thanks
Aug-03-06  iWaNnAbAgM: So<fevered cheek>where should we finish the game?
Aug-03-06  fevered cheek: i have a friend with a premium membership, he'll let us use his forum. his username is seven trumpets
Aug-03-06  iWaNnAbAgM: Alright,so when do you wanna start?
Aug-03-06  fevered cheek: let's start now, i have about an hour before i have to go
Oct-15-06  Loisp: hiarcs 9 cannot find the classic sac Bxh7 after 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Qc7 7. Nf3 Ne7 8. a4b6 9. Bb5+ Bd7 10. Bd3 Nbc6 11. O-O O-O on my pc(chessbase gui). i heard about 'agressive' mode, how is it activated?
Oct-15-06  Albertan: Hi Loisp to activate "aggressive" mode in Hiarcs 9, first click on the engine menu, then click on "change main engine" then click on "engine parameters" and go into the "playing style window" and change it to "aggressive" if it is not already set there.

Nov-08-06  James Bowman: I have Hiarcs running on my Dell Axim handheld, I have no Idea what playing strength it is, but it is very suseptable to attacks on the H file in a semi-closed position. In an open position where it can give itself chances on both sides of the board it kills me. This is using the fruit engine that comes with it. I get very bored playing it as the games are always are very similar and I am going to load some more engines and try them. Maybee I will download some games as an example.

Jan-02-08  Karpova: Hiarcs won the 17th International Paderborn Computer Chess Championship with 5.5/7 ahead of Rybka (also 5.5/7 but a slightly worse Buchholz). http://wwwcs.uni-paderborn.de/~IPCCC/

Hiarcs drew Rybka, Cluster Toga (third place with 5.0/7), Spike and won all the other games.
