KENNETH ROGOFF
(born Mar-22-1953, 72 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Kenneth Saul Rogoff learned chess from his father at age six, but only took up the game in earnest when he received a chess set for his 13th birthday. He was soon recognized as a chess prodigy. By age 14, he was a USCF Master and New York State Open Champion, and shortly thereafter became a Senior Master, the highest US national title.

At 16, Rogoff dropped out of high school to concentrate on chess. He won the 1969 United States Junior Championship. Rogoff spent the next several years living primarily in Europe and playing in tournaments there. He finished third in the 1971 World Junior Championship, behind winner Werner Hug and Zoltan Ribli (second). At 18, he decided to go to college and pursue a career in economics rather than become a chess professional, but continued to play and improve for several years afterward.

FIDE awarded Rogoff the IM title in 1974, and the GM title in 1978. His best tournament result was second place at the United States Championship (1975), half a point behind six-time champion Walter Browne. This qualified him for the Biel Interzonal (1976), where he finished tied for 13th–15th. He tied for second with eight other players at Lone Pine (1976), half a point behind Tigran Petrosian. Rogoff tied for first at Norristown (1973) and Orense 1976.

Early in his economics career, Rogoff served as chief economist at the International Monetary Fund and also on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. He is currently the Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Economics at Harvard University.

  HeMateMe: So now the judge in the trump documents case is allowing for unnecessary delays? Well, I don't think it will save Donald Trump.

1) he won't beat Biden in an election; and

2) the supreme Court will not allow a president to pardon himself, especially for crimes committed while not in office.

I think there are commentators here who secretly hope for a trump presidency but it's not going to happen. He's going to jail instead.

Eventually he reveals, that he is Ukrainian, and that he is talking about captured tanks.

Reading 1
Bar 4:5-12, 27-29>

Fear not, my people!
Remember, Israel,
You were sold to the nations
not for your destruction;
It was because you angered God
that you were handed over to your foes.
For you provoked your Maker
with sacrifices to demons, to no-gods;
You forsook the Eternal God who nourished you,
and you grieved Jerusalem who fostered you.>
She indeed saw coming upon you
the anger of God; and she said:

"Hear, you neighbors of Zion!
God has brought great mourning upon me,
For I have seen the captivity
that the Eternal God has brought
upon my sons and daughters.
With joy I fostered them;
but with mourning and lament I let them go.
Let no one gloat over me, a widow,
bereft of many:
For the sins of my children I am left desolate,
because they turned from the law of God.>

Fear not, my children; call out to God!
He who brought this upon you will remember you.
As your hearts have been disposed to stray from God, turn now ten times the more to seek him;
For he who has brought disaster upon you
will, in saving you, bring you back enduring joy.">

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 69:33-35, 36-37>

R. (34) The Lord listens to the poor.> "See, you lowly ones, and be glad;
you who seek God, may your hearts revive!
For the LORD hears the poor,
and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.
Let the heavens and the earth praise him,
the seas and whatever moves in them!"
R. The Lord listens to the poor.>

For God will save Zion
and rebuild the cities of Judah.
They shall dwell in the land and own it,
and the descendants of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall inhabit it.
R. The Lord listens to the poor.>

Alleluia
See Mt 11:25>

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom. R. Alleluia, alleluia.>

Gospel
Lk 10:17-24>

The seventy-two disciples returned rejoicing and said to Jesus, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name." Jesus said, "I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Behold, I have given you the power
'to tread upon serpents' and scorpions
and upon the full force of the enemy
and nothing will harm you.
Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.">

At that very moment he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father,
and who the Father is except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.">

Turning to the disciples in private he said,
"Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
For I say to you,
many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.">

  al wazir: <stone free or die: Actually, according to this AP news report, it has nothing to do with the trilateral accord>.

You mean, Hamas didn't clear this attack with the Saudis? I never said they did.

But the Saudis are Arabs. It's going to be really hard for them to get into bed with Israel at a time when it is AT WAR with another Arab people.

  al wazir: Here's an excerpt from a long piece written by a left-wing Israeli about the general beastliness and specific crimes committed by Israeli "settlers" against Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank:

<Lately, settler violence has taken the form of large-scale predatory attacks on Palestinian villages—what I, in the light of my own family history, can only call pogroms. (My granduncle was murdered by Cossacks in Ukraine before World War I.) On the night of February 26 in the northern West Bank, hundreds of armed settlers descended on the village of Hawara after two settlers were shot dead that day by a Palestinian. Palestinian houses were burned to the ground, vehicles were torched, innocent civilians were attacked, and one Palestinian man—a gentle peace worker, as it happened—was shot to death. A similar outrage was perpetrated by Jewish settlers in the village of Turmus‘ayya on June 21. Such attacks, usually accompanied by machine-gun fire, are now common, though they may vary somewhat in scale. Palestinian villagers in Area C of the West Bank, where all the Jewish settlements and outposts are located, live in constant fear.> https://www.nybooks.com/articles/20...

It's all true. The policy of the right-wing Netanyahu government is deliberate oppression of Arabs living in the West Bank and its eventual annexation. What they're doing there is ethnic cleansing. There's no other term that fits.

However, notice the clause buried inside that paragraph: <after two settlers were shot dead that day by a Palestinian.> The Palestinians struck the first blow. This was the pretext the settlers invoked to justify their "predatory attack."

Here's how it works. Hamas -- or Islamic Jihad or some other Palestinian militant group -- shoots a couple of Israeli civilians, or launches a home-made missile that destroys someone's house, killing those inside.

Netanyahu says, "See? The Palestinians are terrorists," and immediately orders *massive* reprisals that kill dozens of militants, along with a handful of ordinary Palestinians who happened to get in the way. The Israeli public -- most of it anyway -- agrees and applauds the military action. This is how Netanyahu's racist, nationalist thugs stay in power.

Hamas says, "See? the Israelis are not just out to steal all the land in Palestine that belongs to us, they want to *kill* every Palestinian." The people living in the Gaza Strip agree and call for more revanchist attacks. This is how Hamas's racist, nationalist thugs stay in power.

  chancho: 198 dead (and counting) with 1,610 wounded in Gaza.

Expect massive losses.

Hamas prefers to self destruct than resolve their grievances.

Could all this mayhem lead to WWlll?

Oct-07-23  stone free or die: <al w> Do you think <Hamas> intelligence had awareness of the Trilateral agreement before the mass media caught whiff of it?

https://breakingdefense.com/2023/08...

That's back at the end of August / beginning of September.

How long do you think it took Hamas to plan and prepare this operation?

This simple exercise in logic shows there's little likelihood of a direct connection.

Much more likely is the operation was timed to the Jewish holiday and anniversary of the Yom Kippur war.

Certainly, it's true that the exclusion of the Palestinians from the Trilateral talks, among a constellation of other examples, shows how desperate and neglected the Palestinian condition has become in the eyes of the rest of the world.
