OLIVER BARBOSA
(born Sep-29-1986, 38 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

IM (2008); GM (2011).

Oliver Barbosa was born in Pasig City, Manila. He was the 1997 Shell Philippines National Youth Grand Finals Champion. In 2004 he reached the Philippines National semi-finals. The same year he was both the Philippines national under-18 Champion, and the Philippines National Junior Champion. In 2006, he came equal third behind Wesley So and Ronald Dableo at the 2nd Prospero Pichay Cup in Manila. Later that year he was a member of the successful Philippines team that defeated Myanmar in a team contest, his personal contribution being to score 8/12 to assist a clean sweep of all boards. Towards the end of 2010, he competed in the Penang Heritage City Open International Chess Tournament where he came equal first alongside Oliver Dimakiling with 7.5/9. He continued his good form immediately afterwards in the Asean Open Championships 2010 in Singapore, where he again came equal first, this time with Georgian GM Zurab Alekseyevich Azmaiparashvili, with a score of 6.5/9, drawing his individual game with the co-leader.

2011 started off with a successful result in the Moscow Open 2011 E, where he came equal second with 7.5/9, half a point behind the winner Vladimir Belous, losing only to Alexander Beliavsky, but defeating his other two GM opponents, namely Pavel Mikhailovich Kotsur from Kazakhstan and Russia's Sergey Volkov. In March he came =2nd at the Brunei 2011 IM Tournament 1 behind Dzhurabek Khamrakulov and then came equal first in the Brunei 2011 IM Tournament 2, also played in March. He scored 5/9 - and his first GM norm - at the 10th Asian Individual Championship (2011) in May, and in July he took outright first at the Campomanes Memorial Yangon International Open 2011 in Myanmar, with 7.5/9. Also in July he scored 8/13 to place =2nd with veteran GM Eugenio Torre, half a point behind prodigy GM Wesley So in the National Championships played in Manila, securing his second GM norm. His 3rd GM norm came at the Raja Nazrin Shah Invitational Masters in Kuala Lumpur in September. As his rating is already over 2500, his GM title was ratified by FIDE at its Congress in later October 2011.

2012 has seen him place a splendid 5th with 6/9 at the Asian Continental Chess Championship (2012), qualifying him for participation in the 2013 World Cup and win the Orissa GM Open held in Bhuvaneshwar in India with 8.5/10. He also played on board 2 for the Philippines at the Chess Olympiad (2012) held in Istanbul, scoring 7/10 with a TPR of 2668 and placed =1st at the Bangkok Chess Club Open 2013, scoring 7/9. He also placed 2nd at the 2013 Asian Continental Championship with 6.5/9. He won the 2013 Battle of Grandmasters with 10/13 and won the silver medal representing Tagatay on board 2 at the Asian Cities Championship 2013, helping his city team to the gold medal. In March 2014, he won the 19th International Grandmaster Open in Kolkata with 7.5/10 and in April was =1st alongside Francisco Vallejo Pons.

In the first round of the World Cup (2013), he lost in the first round to Le Quang Liem, the loss eliminating him from the contest.

Barbosa was a silver medalist of the 2005 SEA games. In 2003 he coached the Taytay team.

Jun-16-13  twinlark: An update on FIDE's list.

The final zonal qualifiers are the top two from Zonal 3.4 just completed in Osh, Kyrgysztan, namely: Anton Filippov and Muhammad Khusenkhojaev who wins the IM title for qualifying for the World Cup over the board.

The only players left to "qualify" are the six nominees of the FIDE president.

Jun-16-13  lakers4sho: I am willing to bet that Carlsen, Aronian, and Kramnik won't be participating, so the list has 9 more slots to be filled..

Jul-10-13  pinoymaster77: Per World Cup tournament site, In the 1st round the three top-seeded players GM Levon Aronian of Armenia, GM Fabiano Caruana of Italy and Russian GM Vladimir Kramnik face Mikhail Markov (2305) of Kyrgyzstan, IM G. Akash (2332) from India and FM Gillian Bwalya (2310) from Zambia respectively. Previous World Cup winner GM Peter Svidler of Russia faces reigning Women's World Champion GM Anna Ushenina of Ukraine.

GM Wesley will be playing GM Ipatov and Coach Susan says top GMs Tomashevsky and Aronian are in Wes' part of the draw (possible opponent in next round) while can't access the pairings tree for the opponents of GM Barbosa and Paragua, who will probably be from the upper half of the field...

Oct-23-13  lakers4sho: Tagatay (Barbosa, Paragua, Gomez, Laylo) doing well in the current Asian Cities team Championship. It looks like they will win the whole thing.

Does anyone know if this team will be competing in the World Team Championship later this year?

Oct-30-13  pinoymaster77: Walang balita on such participation after the Asian Cities.

Saka wala sa NCFP Calendar yang World Team championships, and wala sa level na yun ang Pilipinas...

Nov-22-13  rjsolcruz: GM Oliver Barbosa has volunteered to do a simul at Meralco to help raise funds for the victims of super typhoon Yolanda. His very words were "para sa mga kababayan natin."

Other masters who volunteered are GM Ronald Dableo, IM Chito Garma, NMs Gerry Cabellon, Efren Bagamasbad, Ed Garma, Jerad Docena, Marlon Bernardino, and FM Leo Carlos.

Jan-05-14  pinoymaster77: After 7 rounds in Gurgaon GM event, GMs Barbosa and Gomez both have 5.5 pts. GM Oli was among the leaders and had 5.5/6 before a rd7 loss to IM Prasanna.

But they're just half point behind the leaders, and still 3 rounds to go.

Hope he ends up with > 2580 after this event, then to follow pa New Delhi Open which could have a tougher field.
