OLIVER BARBOSA
(born Sep-29-1986, 38 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

IM (2008); GM (2011).

Oliver Barbosa was born in Pasig City, Manila. He was the 1997 Shell Philippines National Youth Grand Finals Champion. In 2004 he reached the Philippines National semi-finals. The same year he was both the Philippines national under-18 Champion, and the Philippines National Junior Champion. In 2006, he came equal third behind Wesley So and Ronald Dableo at the 2nd Prospero Pichay Cup in Manila. Later that year he was a member of the successful Philippines team that defeated Myanmar in a team contest, his personal contribution being to score 8/12 to assist a clean sweep of all boards. Towards the end of 2010, he competed in the Penang Heritage City Open International Chess Tournament where he came equal first alongside Oliver Dimakiling with 7.5/9. He continued his good form immediately afterwards in the Asean Open Championships 2010 in Singapore, where he again came equal first, this time with Georgian GM Zurab Alekseyevich Azmaiparashvili, with a score of 6.5/9, drawing his individual game with the co-leader.

2011 started off with a successful result in the Moscow Open 2011 E, where he came equal second with 7.5/9, half a point behind the winner Vladimir Belous, losing only to Alexander Beliavsky, but defeating his other two GM opponents, namely Pavel Mikhailovich Kotsur from Kazakhstan and Russia's Sergey Volkov. In March he came =2nd at the Brunei 2011 IM Tournament 1 behind Dzhurabek Khamrakulov and then came equal first in the Brunei 2011 IM Tournament 2, also played in March. He scored 5/9 - and his first GM norm - at the 10th Asian Individual Championship (2011) in May, and in July he took outright first at the Campomanes Memorial Yangon International Open 2011 in Myanmar, with 7.5/9. Also in July he scored 8/13 to place =2nd with veteran GM Eugenio Torre, half a point behind prodigy GM Wesley So in the National Championships played in Manila, securing his second GM norm. His 3rd GM norm came at the Raja Nazrin Shah Invitational Masters in Kuala Lumpur in September. As his rating is already over 2500, his GM title was ratified by FIDE at its Congress in later October 2011.

2012 has seen him place a splendid 5th with 6/9 at the Asian Continental Chess Championship (2012), qualifying him for participation in the 2013 World Cup and win the Orissa GM Open held in Bhuvaneshwar in India with 8.5/10. He also played on board 2 for the Philippines at the Chess Olympiad (2012) held in Istanbul, scoring 7/10 with a TPR of 2668 and placed =1st at the Bangkok Chess Club Open 2013, scoring 7/9. He also placed 2nd at the 2013 Asian Continental Championship with 6.5/9. He won the 2013 Battle of Grandmasters with 10/13 and won the silver medal representing Tagatay on board 2 at the Asian Cities Championship 2013, helping his city team to the gold medal. In March 2014, he won the 19th International Grandmaster Open in Kolkata with 7.5/10 and in April was =1st alongside Francisco Vallejo Pons.

In the first round of the World Cup (2013), he lost in the first round to Le Quang Liem, the loss eliminating him from the contest.

Barbosa was a silver medalist of the 2005 SEA games. In 2003 he coached the Taytay team.

Mar-28-14  epistle: Congratulations to wordfunph for winning at the Quezon Memorial Chess Tournament yesterday! The tiger of San Pedro strikes again!
Mar-28-14  pinoymaster77: I've been looking out for any write-up in the major dailies from the 2 remaining sportswriters who feature chess stories, but none so far.

The best talaga Joey J, on top sa PH chess developments. Dapat makuha din ng major dailies and sports sites mga articles mo, with the proper fees.

Mar-28-14  pinoymaster77: epistle,
Do you have pics of those QC battles? May PGN ba
Mar-29-14  jhayver: hi po sainyong lahat! Maraming salamat po sa support niyo and sa pagview ng results and games kung nakita niyo po.Swerte lang po kase diko naman hawak ung title up until the last round, nakadepende po laht sa mangyayari sa board 1.should Vidit have won or drawn his game I would just end up 2nd place so luck lang po siguro tlga.anyways tuloy lang po aral, not sure sa next tournament, kase last minute naman kung magsabi ang ncfp, minsan nagsasabi sila pero cancelled din so di kame nakakagawa ng schedule.About the allowance diko na inaasahan na magbago, last sept nung dinegrade nila ko i was even still no. 2 then, and world cup qualifier, and 2nd sa ASIAN continental 2013,and top 5 sa ASIAN continental 2012,then ngaung feb dinegrade n naman kasi walang medal sa SOUTH EAST ASIAN GAMES.Medyo mahirap po tlga kung nakaasa ka lang sa ncfp at psc kasi performance based ata yung ginagawa nila or diko alam kung anu or saang performance nila ibinebased yun.Have plans of campaigning abroad which provides more opportunity and more tournament experience, not to mention possible bigger income.Hirap na po dito kung nakaasa lang, lalo na ngayon wlang medal sa seag, limited na mga tournament ko abroad, tulad nitong kolkata open walang support from ncfp or psc so I have to go there by myself and on my own expenses.
Mar-29-14  lakers4sho: <jhayver> Just work hard, the nilaga will come sooner or later. Congratulations for winning the event, bottomline is you ended up 1st and that's all that matters. I expect things to heat up heading into the Olympiad. Good luck!
Mar-29-14  wordfunph: <epistle: Congratulations to wordfunph for winning at the Quezon Memorial Chess Tournament yesterday!

all the best, GM Oliver "Barbwire" Barbosa!

Mar-30-14  pinoymaster77: If a number of GMs are unavailable to play in the BOGM (listed in NCFP calendar for June pa), then it should not be part of Olympiad qualifiers, and better off to maybe have purely selection of players available to play in the Olympiad.

Looks like that is the indicative scenario

Mar-30-14  spawn2: GM Barbwire's win in India was featured in Chessbase. Proud to see GM Oliver's name on top of the list with PHI besides his name.
