FIDE player card for Paulo Bersamina

PAULO BERSAMINA
(born Feb-01-1998, 27 years old) Philippines

[what is this?]

FIDE Master (2010); International Master (2014).

Bersamina won his FIDE master title when he won the 11th ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championship for the U12 division in Olongapo City in June 2010. He gained his International Master title in 2014 when he won the ASEAN Junior Championship in June 2014.

In 2010, at the age of 12 years 3months 23 days, he became the youngest player ever to win the National Junior Championship. He went on to win the 2nd Singapore International Youth Championships 2011 - Open U14 with 8/9. The Philippines team came 2nd overall (behind hosts Vietnam) in the 13th ASEAN+ Age Group Championships held in June 2012 in Hue City in Vietnam, with Bersamina winning 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals and a bronze medal in the U14 Team and Individual events.

Bersamina started 2013 strongly: playing in the 1st Chairman's Cup International Chess Championship in Manila, he scored 5.5/9 and a few days later competed at the Zonal 3.3 Open where he scored 4/9. These two events netted him 60 ratings points. His strong 4.5/9 result at the Manny Pacquiao Cup Continental Championship earned him another 26 rating points. A substandard performance at the 14th ASEAN+ U16 Championship was made up by a strong showing at the Asian U16 Championship where he placed =1st.

After a quiet start in the first half of 2014, he won the ASEAN Junior Championship held in Macau in June, scoring 7/9, a full point ahead of the field, netting his IM title in so doing. Just as impressive was shared 3rd at the 2014 National Championship in the Philippines, with 6.5/11, a point behind co-leaders Eugenio Torre and John Paul Gomez, a result that added over 30 ratings points to his card. He played board 4 for the Philippines at the Tromso Olympiad (2014), scoring 5/9 and won the most rating points in the team. He competed in the World Junior Championship 2014, scoring 7.5/13.

In March 2015 he scored a strong 5.5/9 in the 5th HDBank International Open tournament that was staged in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, his result including an even score against his five GM opponents. The following month in April, he scored a reasonably strong result with 6/9 in the annual Bangkok Chess Club Open.

Bersamina's highest rating to date was 2462 in 2020/2021.

Jul-04-13  pinoymaster77: Sana FM Pau could get the proper clearance to play in the NCC Semis,as per NCFP calendar still pencilled in for July 27 to 31 but still no announced venue (can still be moved?).

But the BOGM is sked for Sept 3 to 13, no location yet...

We can have a sense 1 year afterwards with that eventful Semis at the PSC Canteen on how the Pinoy IMs/NMs have progressed. Parang 'pagbabalik ng lawin' sana...

Jul-08-13  pinoymaster77: While trying to search for NCAA chess sked eh saw this site, tentative daw opening ceremonies Aug 3?

Will lookout for more official, confirmed announcements, season 89 na pala...

Jul-21-13  spartan1998: Thanks a lot to BW-GETS!

Share ko po ang nasa FIDE Handbook:

8.1

"The Commission on Chess Publication, Information and Statistics (CHIPS) stresses the need for all chess players to take more care in their personal appearance. The image of the chess player should be a dignified one, and dressing properly would not only show respect for the game, but also to sponsors, potential or otherwise, to make it worth their while to spend their money.

For example, some federations have barred slippers, sleeveless T-shirts and vests in their tournaments. Those with unkempt and greasy hair should be admonished, as well as those wearing old or torn jeans and battered attire generally."

I hope this FIDE Article 8.1 under C.01 will be followed at NCFP-sanctioned tournaments.

Good night po!

Jul-21-13  Nf3em: wag mo pansinin mga yun FM Pau ... ;-)
Jul-21-13  pinoymaster77: Just continue your ways, FM Pau.

And let the OTB play do the talking...

Jul-21-13  Pulo y Gata: Indeed, you must think beyond the present. Aim high and let the critics do their business.
Jul-22-13  pinoymaster77: Napansin ko lang nasa chess-results.com and can't help manghinayang na wala na namang entry ang PHI sa World Youth U-16! Puede pala chess club and schools o. Well maybe just a dream maybe in near future ETCF can field a team? The last time for PHI was the quartet of Wesley,Jan Garcia, Hari Pascua & Alcon Datu.

Nowadays we also have the talented FM Paulo, Literatus, Jerad & Gio eh...

Jul-25-13  spawn2: FM Pau,

Hope your preparation for the National Open Semi scheduled this Saturday is in full swing. Time to get that ticket for you to play in the Finals and once again face the big boys of Philippine Chess.

Jul-27-13  epistle: Pau now has a 10-game winning streak, including the nine prodigies he paun-dead yesterday at Megamall.
Jul-27-13  pinoymaster77: Nice start for FM Paulo stopping young upstart Charles Abuzo formerly of FEU HS, the latter earned a draw with him in last year's Semis. Notable upsets in the opening round were NM Jerad Docena over IM Oliver Dimakiling, Kevin Mirano (still FEU?) over IM Barlo Nadera, Narquingden Reyes (St Benilde) over Coach/FM Randy Segarra and Robert Cacho over FM Christopher Castellano.

Notable participants (havent been in standard tournaments for awhile) were NM Gerry Cabellon who won over strong NM Noel Dela Cruz and Coach Roland Perez (Letran) who bowed to NM Emmanuel Emperado.

Pero 9 rounds pa, dami pa puwedeng mangyari, have to check again the rules kung ilan ang mag-qualify from this Semis, to the BOGM...

Jul-27-13  pinoymaster77: Ganun pala nangyari paniero epistle, mahilig talaga si FM Pau magwalis ahehe. Ganun ang training sa 'Light the Darkness' and for spartans eh pag over the board eh 'no mercy' and 'take no prisoners' ahehe.

Starting tomorrow eh 2 standard games per day, sa umaga pa lang sa round 2 eh bakbakan na agad. Aircon naman daw venue sa isang QC public school and malaki lugar...

Jul-27-13  pinoymaster77: Per the rules posted in NCFP site, eh before the start of the event ma-announce ilang slots and open for qualifiers so will have to ask those who were there.

Sofia rules in effect, most probably in recollection of what happened last year with those quick/short, pre-arranged draws in the last round, which were ordered replayed by Prez Pichay.

Tie-Breaks – the following tie-break system in descending order of priority, shall be used to determine the final ranking of the players at the end of the tournament:

a. Direct Encounter

c. S.B. System
d. Median Buchholz (minus highest and lowest)
e. Number of wins (forfeit counted)

Jul-28-13  pinoymaster77: Per reply by Lilet, the BOGM is fixed to 14 participants. So for example 8 GMs make it, the top 6 from the Semis will join them while if 10 GMs play, then only the top 4 from the Semis join them. Maugong the BOGM could be held in Lingayen.

On round2, draw FM Pau w/ Den Reyes.

Interesting match-ups - Emperado over Docena, Panops over Joseph N, Elorta over Gio, sayang daw Cabellon lost to Habla, while Perez absorbed 2nd loss to Dimaks, Nisperos lost to Llavanes.

Upsets/ surprises - Rilloraza (U12) drew W/ IM Nadera, JF Donguines (U14) over NM Manaog, Jacutina (U14) over FM Castellano, Viernes (U16) over Roma.

Mukhang mas sumasabay na this time mga youngsters, good sign!

IM Gosh Diptayan is contemporary of FM Pau and they've probably played many games. Its a pity this is OUT of the RADAR of NCFP, pati yung World Youth. We're too fixated on the ASEAN Level pa lang... http://www.chess-results.com/tnr106...

Habla grabs solo lead in National Open semis chess tilt

NATIONAL MASTER Jony Habla is showing the form that made him a star in collegiate chess in the ongoing 2013 Semi-Finals National Chess Championships at the Ponciano Bernardo Elementary School, P. Tuazon Blvd. Cubao, Quezon City.

The pride of Novaliches Novelty Chess Club, a former anchor of Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in SCUAA-NCR meet in the late 90's, downed International Master Emmanuel Senador to grab the solo lead after fifth rounds in the event backed up by Bayan Muna party list rep. Neri Javier Colmenares and DepEd ASEC Tonisito Umali and organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. and Secretary-General Cavite 7th district rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr.

Habla prevails after 55 pushes of London System Opening using the white pieces to raise his total 4.5 points.

Currently employee at DepEd, Habla earlier beat Ricky Echala and NM Gerry Cabellon, drew with FM Fernie Donguines and upset top seed IM Rolando Nolte, respectively.

Fide Master Paulo Bersamina and Narquingden Reyes climbed to second to seventh place with 4.0 points following their impressive wins.

Bersamina toppled Joseph Navarro after 44 moves of Caro-Kann defense while Reyes routed Efren Arguelles after 28 moves of Sicilian skirmish.

Also with 4.0 points are IM Richelieu Salcedo III, IM Joel Pimentel, FM Roderick Nava and NM Raymond Salcedo.

IM Richelieu split the point with NM Raymond after 31 moves of Pir Defense; Nava and Pimentel halved the point after 30 moves of Slav defense.

In the women's side, top seed Gladys Hazelle Romero stopped the winning run of former solo leader Jean Karen Enriquez after 57 moves of Sicilian defense using the black pieces to create a four-way tie for first place with 3.0 points each that includes Janena Marie Regencia and Krizza Lyn Abasolo after four outings.

Regencia bested Nikki Erica Yngayo after 43 moves of Alekhine defense while Abasolo subdued Arvie Lozano after 67 moves of Modern defense.

Also supporting the FIDE rated event are the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), DepEd NCR Regional Director Dr. Luz, S. Almeda, Ponciano Bernardo Elementary School principal Linaflor E. Cabildo, Asst. Chief P.E. School Sports Dr. Jocelyn V. Marcial, Director IV Dr. Luz S. Almeda and OIC office of the Asst. Regional Director Mr. Rizalino Jose T. Rosales.

Tournament Director is NCFP executive director GM Jayson Gonzales while Chief Arbiter is IA Gene Poliarco.

Jul-29-13  lakers4sho: is this event FIDE rated?
Jul-29-13  pinoymaster77: The last time I witnessed a battle between these 2 protagonists FM Paulo vs IM Joel was in 2012 Natl Jr Finals hosted by Tanauan / Atty Canobas. It was double edged game with Joel giving Pau the eye to try to psyche him, pero as usual cool si Pau. I think one side had a perpetual check line to avoid the other's mating attack, and ended in a fighting draw.

Joel is talented Ilonggo player, protege of the late Bro. Rolly Dizon, kung may disiplina lang, mas malayo narating. He was St Benilde top board/star before and they had some championships, then na-recruit ng NU last year but didn't get to play due to early boot out, then now nasa Lyceum but have to sit out at least 1 season.

Eto lang game nila this am eh 30 minutes late, hope FM Pau deals him a lesson!
