Jun-08-10 | | Marmot PFL: <"Cologne native Robert Hübner, for example, once ranked third in the world, stopped playing for the German national team in protest against doping tests. He refuses to accept the rules of modern sports, because he does not consider chess a sport. Instead, Hübner believes that it belongs in the "realm of cultural assets." Long as its legal, let em use it. |

Nov-25-10 | | Monoceros: <KingG: <Aspirador> I agree. For example the mathemetician Paul Erdos claimed he was incapable of producing any decent mathematics if he wasn't on amphetamines.> An educational story but not one that really proves that amphetamines, or any other drug, is actually an aid to thought. All it really proves is that a hardcore addict couldn't think without them. A confirmed drunkard needs a shot of whisky to stop his hands from shaking--does that really prove that alcohol steadies one's hands? No, it proves that alcohol steadies an alcoholic's hands. |

Nov-25-10 | | moroloser: <I play the Fred> Good comparison. Personally I think Huebner as a superior intellectual and Ivanchuk as slightly better player. |

Nov-25-10 | | parisattack: Huebner's '25 Annotated Games' is a very special book. You won't see games analyzed more in-depth anywhere else. |

Dec-31-10 | | wordfunph: Pal Benko first met Robert Huebner (then an IM) when they were boarding the plane in Barcelona on the way to Palma in 1970. According to Benko, Huebner is quite modest and said
he is satisfied to make a 50% score. He said he is not very well acquainted with the openings and needs more practice in the international arena. Huebner managed a draw against Fischer in the first round. Most of the time, Huebner was in the company of his
second Hans Joachim Hecht who looked like his bodyguard. After the games, they played cards or ping-pong, or even some chess variant. |

Nov-06-11 | | waustad: If you want proof that some Germans do have a sense of humor, see Preußisches Märchen. I've never seen it except in Vienna, but it is hilarious. The music by Boris Blacher is interesting too. Looking at the Wiki page in German, perhaps the Wiener Volksoper took some liberties. They made the Vater the soprano and the Mutter the bass. I know that it was in Austria, but Blacher lived in Berlin for much of his life. |

Apr-25-12 | | Nightsurfer: Dear <SKubrick>, on <Nov-24-04> you have posted the comment that it has been <"... the first time I heard about Herr Huebner ... playing Chinese Chess ...">, and you have asked: <"Does anyone know if he dedicates himself to the game?"> Well, dear <SKubrick>, here is the answer - impressing 7plus years later! <Robert Huebner> is a real scholar of <XiangQi>. In 1993 he has even competed in the World Championship of XiangQi in Beijing, please have a look at a video that covers the event:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAqZ... , and then you should check out the sequences that start at <6 minutes 52 seconds>, <8 minutes 18 seconds> and <9 minutes 34 seconds> in order to watch <Robert Huebner> battling it out on the boards of <XiangQi> in Beijing 1993. 17 years later <Robert Huebner> has started a comeback on the sector of <XiangQi>. On the occasion of a competition between the teams of Germany and Vietnam in Hanoi in April 2010 there has been one special board that has been reserved for <XiangQi> (that game is called "Co Tuong" in Vietnam), and there he sat, <Robert Huebner>, and there he had to face his tough Vietnamese opponent, Master <Vu Huy Cuong>. <Robert Huebner>'s big adventure in Chinese Chess has been featured by ChessBase that has published a reportage on the event in Hanoi 2010:
http://www.chessbase.de/nachrichten...
The two games of <XiangQi> that <Robert Huebner> has played in Hanoi 2010, can be downloaded after turning to the link as follows:
http://www.stosszahn-franken.de/tur... There are two animated boards, therefore the two games can be replayed online. Enjoy! :-) |

Apr-25-12 | | Nightsurfer: <Robert Huebner> is not the only player who plays Chinese Chess <XiangQi> parallel to International Chess. Members of the club are: the former Women's World Champion in International Chess, namely Zhu Chen ; the former Women's World Champion in International Chess, namely Xie Jun. Prominent male players who both play International Chess and <XiangQi> are: the charming Alexander Grischuk ; the former World Champion 2004 in International Chess, Rustam Kasimdzhanov ; the RISING STARS from China, namely Zhong Zhang , Bu Xiangzhi and Wang Yue ; last not least <THE PIONEER of INTERNATIONAL CHESS in CHINA>, namely Liu Wenzhe - please check out the corresponding personal pages here on ChessGames.com! |

Apr-25-12 | | Nightsurfer: In case that one would like to know more about that mysterious Chinese brand of chess that has been the basis of so many Chinese careers in International Chess and that even fascinates a player like <Robert Huebner>, namely that thrilling game <XiangQi>: herewith the link that will lead you to a clip that the German program of MTV has produced on Chinese Chess aka <XiangQi>: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NBX.... The Chinese version of Chess can be compared to modern strategic <tabletop games>, please have a look at a clip that features the climax of a game of <XiangQi> after having transformed the traditional pieces into units on a tabletop: Red army corners Black General, and that is the matrix of the dreaded <HORSE-CANNON-PALCORNER-CHECKMATE> - please watch the final moves in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_ef... . The foregoing clip has transformed the final moves of the friendly game Rene Gralla vs Phan Thang, Hamburg 2003, into a scenario of <Chinese Battle Chess>. That very game <Rene Gralla vs Phan Thang> has been battled out on February 28th, 2003, at Hamburg, Germany, at the place of the Vietnamese <Doctor Quang Nguyen-Chi> at the square <Berliner Platz> in the eastern part of Hamburg. The well-known <Doctor Quang Nguyen-Chi> is a mentor of Chinese Chess, herewith a photo: http://shaolinchess.de/svalban0.gif . |
