VALENTINA GUNINA
(born Feb-04-1989, 36 years old) Russia
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Grandmaster (and WGM).

Valentina Gunina was born in Murmansk. Her father was her first coach and taught her to play. She was Russian Champion in the Girls' under 10, under 14, under 16, under 18, and under 20 national competitions, and has also won the U12 European Youth Chess Championship in 2000, the U14 World Youth Chess Championship in 2003, the U16 European Youth Chess Championship in 2004, and the U18 World Youth Chess Championship in 2007. Her crowning achievement so far has been the Russian Championship Superfinal (Women) (2011). She won the bronze medal on board 3 for the gold medal-winning women's Russian team at the European Team Championship (Women) (2011), repeating her feat from the 2009 edition of the event when she played reserve for the winning Russian team.

A few weeks later in December 2011, she again won bronze, this time on board 4 for the silver winning Russian team at the FIDE Women's World Team Championship (2011). She scored at par (5.5/9) at the 2012 Moscow Open but then defeated front runner Anna Muzychuk in the last round to win the European Championship (Women) (2012), as well as adding a GM norm to her resume. A few days later at the same venue, Gunina won the 2012 European Women's Blitz Championship with a score of 15/20. In June 2012, she won the Women's World Blitz Championship with an incredible 13/15 (+11 =4), 2.5 points clear of the field (still more spectacular is her +17-0=0 in the 2010 Moscow Women's blitz event (1)).* Gunina qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2012) and defeated WGM Gu Xiaobing in the first round before bowing out in the second round after losing to veteran IM and WGM Alisa Galliamova. She scored 6/8 at the World Team Chess Championship (Women) (2017) for Russia(3).

She picked up her 2nd GM norm when she scored 7/10 at the Gibraltar Masters (2013). In October 2013, she repeated her feat of 2011 and won the Russian Championship Superfinal (Women) (2013) outright. She also won the Russian Championship Superfinal (Women) (2014) and the Russian Championship Superfinal (Women) (2021). Winner of the 2016 Super Rapidplay event at London Chess Classics with 9/10.

Apr-01-14  cro777: The traditional chess match <Blondes vs Brunettes> in Moscow.

In Carlson Moscow Restaurant (located on the roof of a modern business centre Central City Tower, with its awesome panoramic views on the Kremlin, Moscow river, and Zamoskvorechie), the team of blonde players headed by Gunina is competing in a 8-round blitz match against the team of brunettes.

This is 4th edition of the April Fool’s Day blitz match. The Russians celebrate the day in the same way as much of the rest of the world, with "trust no one!" the motto. In the first edition (2011), everyone had been wondering whether it was an April Fool's Day hoax but it turned out to be a real event and a fun one at that.

Apr-01-14  cro777: Méfiez-vous des blondes

The blonde team convincingly won the April Fool’s Day blitz match in Moscow 48.5-32.5.

The restaurant is named after cartoon character Carlson, created by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. The cartoon adaptation became popularized in the Soviet Union and to this day, the adaptations are still celebrated as an integral part of the Russian cartoon industry, with Carlson being recognized as a national icon.

Apr-02-14  cro777: Valentina Gunina and Maria Fominykh achieved best individual results scoring 8.5/9.

Penguincw: Congrats to Valentina Gunina for winning the Russian Superfinals (Women) (2014). She finished with 7/9 (losing her first 2 but winning the next 7) to finish 1 point ahead of the 2nd place finisher, Galliamova.

Gunina also gained 15.8 rating points to rise to a career high 2537.8 and the #7 on the women's rankings (which is also a career high).
