This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

Jan-04-15  Abdel Irada: You're right; I was commenting on a <Caissars> nomination rather than making one of my own. If you like, I will ask Daniel to delete the offending post.

I'm curious, though: Have you *seen* <tpstar>'s "The Black Man's Prayer"? Taken in conjunction with the post <OCF> nominated, it shows a pretty clear theme, and I hope members will take cognizance of that theme before casting their votes for <Best Post>.

Don't get me wrong. I don't dislike <tpstar>; he is smart, a good writer and often funny. But he is also a virulent racist, and I don't think that is a minor detail.

Jan-04-15
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: <Abdel> no need to delete, as far as I'm concerned. :)

Yes, I have seen the post. But your question calls for comment on 3 different levels.

(1) Politically - there is racism, which is a reprehensible bigotry. Then there is anti-racism, which is great. But then comes the next stage, when a given anti-racist (or anti-some other kind of bigotry) pendulum swings too far, and turns into reverse racism: it's no longer equality and fairness that are upheld, but the - frankly equally racist as the original bigotry - credo that the formerly discriminated-against group can now do no wrong, and may not be criticized in any way, no matter what.

You may be familiar with the same kind of reverse racism from being accused of antisemitism whenever you dare to let out a critical peep WRT any actions of the Israeli government. ;)

When these pendulums start swinging, they unfortunately almost always end up swinging too far in the other direction, at least for a time. And during that time, some people getting annoyed with the resulting reverse-racist attitudes is not, IMO, necessarily racism.

Is <tpstar> one of these people? Or a racist? Or maybe just a humorist, who likes to portray the zeitgeist? :)

(2) Personally - he is a friend of mine. So are you. And so is Mark, btw. Each and every one of you is always welcome here. But please leave your squabbles with each other at the door.

(3) Chessgames.com site considerations - when the admins were considering "cleaning up" the Rogoff page and returning it to being a regular player page, I advised leaving it be. I support it, because it both answers and contains a need.

Some people love debating. I know the rules, I know the game. ;) It's fun. Personally, I have tired of it years ago, and have come to see it as a rather futile way of spending time, so I don't engage in it anymore. But I understand you. :)

However, this is a chess site - that is its main purpose, and not everybody here likes "argumentativeness", or understands the special principles of formal debate (Why is ad hominem a fallacy? How come when the other guy tells me "your post is stupid" it's not considered a personal attack, but when I call him an idiot, I get told off? Etc.... heh) and guess what, they have a right not to know or like debate; <they> didn't come to a debate site, <you> came to a chess site.

So I not only support the Rogoff page because I understand your need for it, I also support it because, and on the condition that, it <contains> your need for debate. In other words, what happens on the Rogoff page should stay on the Rogoff page. Please do not disseminate your issues, feuds, and animosities from there to the rest of the site.

Drop by here any time, though. :)

Jan-05-15  visayanbraindoctor: Happy new year to you too <Annie>. <twinlark> gave me this link about some science updates in 2014.

http://rt.com/news/216531-science-r...

In this article are several more links to several science articles, from stem cells to genetic engineering, to high tech Pavlovian condition of mice, to uterus and heart transplants, to the origin of water and life on Earth. Most of the articles have the usual elements of media hype so you have to take some of the pronouncements with a grain of salt (especially the one on Egyptian mummies and King Tut), but it does account for some of the high profile topics of science in 2014.

Jan-05-15  visayanbraindoctor: One of the articles describes genetic engineering in monkeys. Such experiments always catches our attention because monkeys and humans share a primate physiology, anatomy, and genetics, and implies the possibility of genetic engineering in humans, which is a taboo topic.

There also have been more studies on how life and water got into Earth. The asteroid bombardment that made the moon craters stopped about 3.8 billion years ago, yet there are already possible signs of life as early as 3.7 billion years ago, and the first fossilized microbes date back about 3.5 billion years ago. How did life start so early after a massive asteroid bombardment that must have partially melted a large part of the Earth's crust?

Related to this is how water, which is necessary for life, got into Earth. Planets and asteroids from the inner asteroid belt inwards are rocky and dry, not much water. But not Earth, whose surface is 70% water.

A medical development surprised me. A woman who was born without a uterus gave birth to a healthy baby from a donated uterus that came from a post menopausal woman. I did not think that is possible, but they did it.

  Domdaniel: <Annie> Your post to Abdel about racism, anti-Semitism, and argumentativeness is utterly, utterly brilliant. Too damn smart for words, even.

When I was writing film/theatre reviews and critiques, my editor used to warn me (from a legal POV) not to say that somebody wasn't doing their job properly. I thought this put the whole idea of reviewing in question - how can you criticize somebody's work without implying that they're not very good at art/film/whatever?

But you're right about that too. It *is* a futile way of spending time, even when you get paid for it.

Pendulums? Swings and roundabouts...

Jan-13-15

  Annie K.: Thanks. :)

You have probably learned this by now, but as long as you only criticize the result, the implied assumption is not necessarily that of overall incompetence by the person responsible. They could have had personal problems, lack of time, lack of health, lack of budget, just plain bad luck, etc. - lack of talent and competence is only one option, and not a clear-cut enough implication to be legally problematic.

Writing articles, that people appear to want to read, for a living is not, in any case, nearly as futile as arguing politics on a chess site. ;)

'Historic Abundance of Blue Whales Returns in California'

Good news for whale watchers. It's probable that the blue whale population in the Pacific west coast of America has recovered and has now reached the ecosystem's carrying capacity. Means that what is now limiting the whale population from expanding is the abundance of its food and other natural constraints, same situation before the historical whale hunts that decimated them.

With this game I left behind the acutely embarrassing 1400's rapid rating, in favor of the slightly less acutely embarrassing 1500's at FIDE... although it's really cheating to claim this game has anything to do with rapid (15 minutes and above) chess; my opponent used about 5 minutes, and I used less than 3, trying hard to play slowly. :p

  Annie K.: <Switch> nice one. :)

I can't tell about the FIDE ratings yet. Haven't been around long enough - they seem stable across the time controls, except for an "unmonitored rating" (games against guests) which seems to be higher - mine is currently somewhere over 1800.

But I haven't seen anything like the huge discrepancy that exists in FICS between the blitz and the standard pools.

  SwitchingQuylthulg: <Annie> Does Tradewise Gibraltar: Epic Game? refer to all games in all rounds of the Masters tournament, or only round 1? Nothing about the wording suggests it's limited to round 1, but the scheduled settlement date is January 27.

  Annie K.: <Switch> whole tournament - thanks, I'll fix the settlement date when I get to a proper computer. :)
