This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  Domdaniel: Wolves can be tardy. Now, um, where was we ... ?

<clarification on the D word> Sure thing. I meant simply that many people with CG habits -- this does not include you, and only includes me sometimes -- are *escaping* from the complexities of real life, into the formalized (and friendly) strictures of CG-style chess.

This may involve denial, especially among those whose self-awareness and other-awareness is not too marked.

Obviously not us, then.

But, as I may have said, I sorta regard addiction and denial as the human condition. They sure form a large part of *what people do*.

Umberto Eco's 'Six Walks in the Fictional Woods' is a good book about stories, wolves, woods, and the like. Your neighborhood narratologist might even approve. ;)

Kthx for explanashun - oops, looks like I've been spending too much time at cheezburger... again... - that matches what I was thinking along the general lines.

<They sure form a large part of *what people do*.>

True, true... they are not the better parts of the human condition though. Except for addictions like coffee and chess, of course. Those are *good*. Whatever <that> is. ;)

<Umberto Eco's 'Six Walks in the Fictional Woods'>

<Another> book recommendation?! *Groan*. Like, books still exist? I'm not sure I know how to operate them anymore. Last time I reached the end of a whole page, I couldn't find the <next> button anywhere... :s

OK, noted. ;) Speakinuv your recommendations, I tried to find Pynchon hereabouts, at the main Israeli bookstore chain, Steimatzky. After much fuss, the only Pynchon book they managed to procure for me was 'Inherent Vice'. So, I've got that here now, and before I do anything rash, like trying to read it, I thought I'd ask you whether that's a good "first" book to read by Pynchon. If not, I can put it aside and get some books from Amazon first. :)

  Domdaniel: <A> I would suggest either of two books: The Crying of Lot 49 (1966) or Inherent Vice (2009). These are also the shortest and least prone to fantastically obscure rambles.

Gravity's Rainbow (1973) is a mega-meta masterpiece ... but *starting* there? No.

The problem with Inherent Vice is that its author may come across as a dopey old hippie whose flashes of brilliance are interwoven with dope-addled goofball comedy. A bit like me, but smarter.

'Lot 49' shows that brilliance when it was young and sharp and relatively unstoned (like the proverbial turn). And on a level I couldn't even dream of emulating.

After that, he got better.

I suppose you <have> noticed that 31.b4?? is a horrible error, giving Black time to defend when 31.Qxd5! at once would win outright (if 31...exd5 32.Rxe8+ Bf8 33.Be7 and Black is hopelessly lost). You're just using this as a test to see if anyone actually ever looks at the games you post. Right?

Nov-10-10

  Annie K.: <SwitchingQuylthulg: <<Annie K.> Polite greeting (happy now?)>>

Hello. As much as usual. Are you? :)

I did in fact consider playing QxR on move 31 already, with 33.Be7 and all - <before> I decided to try b4 first. That line takes too much calculation <for blitz>. After, say, 33...f5, both K and Q <may> survive the immediate danger - I didn't have time to make sure they wouldn't. And if they do... while either OTB or in corr one would be happy to play RRB vs Q, in blitz it's much easier to get your pieces uncoordinated for a move or two, while trying to realign them for attack - and in that moment, even the lone Q is dangerous.

As you may have noticed, my opponent was rated about 150 higher - this, for one thing, means he wasn't going to resign just because I had the theoretical advantage (as indeed he didn't after 32.Qxd5 either)... but for another thing, it also means he thought he could take his time - and <that> is what made 31.b4 worth a try. ;)

Nov-10-10

  SwitchingQuylthulg: A FICS regular who still thinks of 10 0 as "blitz"? I'm astonished.
Nov-10-10
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: 'Astonished' isn't 'happy'. ;)

10 0 counts for something called a "blitz rating". Games from 15 0 and above count for something called a "standard rating". Call me literal. :p

Thanks for looking at the game. :)

Nov-10-10

  SwitchingQuylthulg: <literal: 10 0 counts for something called a "blitz rating".>

You have a point, I guess. I just have a different mindset - to me, 3 0 is blitz, 5 0 is rapid, 10 0 is standard, 15 0 is correspondence and 604800 259200 is blitz again because I'll be too lazy to analyse.

  Domdaniel: <Q/thulg> is *technically* right, but I think b4 was a good try. Always nice to prod one's opponent in the general direction of errors, especially ones that allow flashy wins.

In the matter of time controls, anything faster than 90 mins/game is blitz, and I take the Botvinnik line on blitz.

Pixies? Pixilated pixies? It's only a pic, sure ...

<Dom> remind me what Botvinnik thought about blitz?

  Domdaniel: Botvinnik story, from 1960s, apocryphal, goes:

Young Master: Dr Botvinnik, you would do me the honour of playing one game? At blitz?

Botvinnik: Young man, I have not played blitz in forty years.

(I think he also said it rotted the brain, led to over-dependence on ill-formed intuitions, and made hair sprout from your palms ... or maybe, like me, he just wasn't any good at it.)

<craw> heh... thanks for trying. :) I'm home now, so I can see that in <Deffi>'s version the text (while English, as I thought it was) is not lyrics. :(

<Deffi> could you maybe summarize what the song is about please? :)

Nov-11-10  dakgootje: There was a translation at Deffi's link actually, page 2 of the comments:

Yaadon Mein Jis Ki Kisi Ka Naam Hai / When there is some name that you have memories of

Sapno Ke Jaise Us Ki Har Shaam Hai / every evening is like a dream about that person

Koi To Ho Jise Apna Dil.. Dijiye / Give your heart to someone

Phir Dekhiye… / and then see...

Khwab Bhun.. Yeh Zara / Build a dream...

Geet Sun.. Yeh Zara / Listen to this song...

Phool Chun.. Yeh Zara... / Pick these flowers...

Phir Dekhiye… / And then see...

Hoton Pe Jis Ke Koi To Geet Hai / When there is a song on your lips

Woh Haare Bhi To Us Ki Hi Jeet Hai / Even if you loose you win

Dil Mein Jo.. Geet Hai Gun Guna.. Lijiye / Sing the song that is in your heart

Phir Dekhiye... / and then see...

Interestingly, online translators are completely at a loss.

  Annie K.: Thanks <dakkie>! :)

Interesting - I like it.

A cultural fracture point though... picking flowers.

Here, we <look> at the flowers - and leave them alone. This is a semi-arid country; flowers are national treasures, to be shared and not harmed.

Picking them would be a huge social faux pas, the behavior of small children whose parents fail their duties as educators (the kids will learn better from their peers anyway, once they start kindergarten - the 'fail' mark here goes entirely to the parents, if they don't teach the kid better first time s/he tries to pick a flower) and clueless new immigrants, who will most likely be told off for it. :p

Heh. I couldn't agree more with this practice though... I visited Romania one summer in the nineties, and went hiking with friends. They innocently suggested I pick some flowers to take home. Umm... I immediately laid down the law about there being no flower-picking in my presence. So, they thought I was nuts (that's not news, anyway...) but they humored me. ;)
