This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  Annie K.: <craw> great job finding that - thanks. :) You a Zel afficionado too, or just made a search project of the question?

<Dom> - craw's link refers to Nightranger's comment:

<Don't remember the title of the book with the actual chess game. Been a while.>

Unicorn Variations is the short story with a chess game in it.

<Nightranger> welcome to the fringe. :) Except we consider it the center. ;)

<Very fond of Amber, although, I'm pretty sure we're closer to the Courts right now.>

And/or in the period of Amber under, or just after, Eric's reign? ;)

Heh. The Courts of Chaos indeed - although there is, as always, some method to the madness. Even if the plot sometimes feels like a night out at Tir-na Nog'th. :p

<Dom> innarested yet? ;)

Hmmm - I know I <have> Deus Irae in my collection... and I'm pretty sure I musta read it at some time... but I don't really remember it. May be time for a reread. But it's not - AFAIK - considered one of Zelazny's best works.

Heh. Looking forward to the Klu Hunt, eh? ;)

OK, more when I get home... :)

Nov-22-10  crawfb5: <Annie> I have read <some> Zel, and actually have a used copy of the hardback <Unicorns> somewhere in the pile. At one point I was doing a half-hearted collection of chess in fiction (when I'd see something pop up in the used bookstores or even something new reasonably priced I'd grab it, but I didn't get to the "I <have> to have this" stage), so I have a number of the more popular examples.
Nov-22-10  Nightranger: < crawfb5: ... <The Unicorn Variations> > That's the one.

< Annie K > Right after Eric's reign... waiting for Ghostwheel...

Tir-na Nog'th, indeed. :-)

I need to dig out the ol' Chronicles again.

  Annie K.: <Nightranger> heh. Never hurts. :)

<craw> cute project. The first story that springs to mind for me, when I connect "SF" to "chess", is 'Second Game' by Charles V. De Vet and Katherine MacLean, even though there's no actual chess game described in it, but a "chess-like" game is central to the plot.

Here's an interesting site about chess/futuristic games I just found while looking for a synopsis: http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/fu...

Back to Zelazny, he was one of the best myth-makers and -incorporators. This is evident in all his works (and if he had a weakness at all, it was his tendency to get a little <too> carried away on the mythical side now and then...), but I think the Amber series was his best, and most engaging, work. :)

<Dom> I just scanned through Deus Irae, and I think now I can better put my finger on why I didn't find the book memorable the first time around (a vague familiarity tells me I did read it before). But it's... not as <warm> as Zelazny's other work, or even other cooperative efforts. Zelazny was a warm person, a warm writer. Deus Irae is cold - not just "gloomy", Zel could do *that* just fine himself, although he can be wonderfully playful as well - but <cold> as in lacking human warmth, lacking the reflection of Roger's fundamental belief in human goodness, that he projected even at his "worst".

Philip K. Dick should have stayed the heck away from him. :\

Roger had done very good cooperative work with Jane Lindskold ('Lord Demon', 'Donnerjack', and more) and Robert Sheckley ('Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming', 'If at Faust You Don't Succeed', and ''A Farce to Be Reckoned With' - these three are a hilarious trilogy). :)

Nov-22-10  crawfb5: <Annie> I trust you've seen the chess-themed SF anthology edited by Fred Saberhagen, <Pawn to Infinity>?

http://www.amazon.com/Pawn-Infinity...

It has the Zelazny story as well as others.

  Domdaniel: I happologize for that last himpetuosity.

Appens...

<Philip K. Dick should have stayed the heck away from him.> Possibly. Though Dick wound up *literally* believing that many so-called people were machines in disguise. "Fierce, cold things", he called 'em. A small remnant of his mental state remains in the Blade Runner empathy test.

If you want a warmer Dick, I suggest ... well, on second thoughts I have no suggestions at all...

  Annie K.: <Nightranger> looks like King Random has just ascended to the throne. Hopefully. ;)

Btw, <twinlark> is another Zelazny afficionado on record around here. :)

<craw> well, actually, I haven't... thing is, my personal SF-centric era (mainly between 1990-2000 or so) has not, until now, really coincided with my chess-centric era, which started about 2004 and is planned to continue indefinitely - I've largely dropped out of the SF scene since I discovered The Net. Not intentionally, but the interactivity of the medium does tend to make it a more attractive pastime than passive reading. (Wasn't that one of McLuhan's predictions, btw?) Anyhoo, since back when I did most of my SF reading I wasn't particularly interested by chess, I could pass by, or even read, chess-related stories, without taking any particular note of that attribute. Now it sounds more interesting, of course. ;)

<Dom: <Appens...>>

No worries. ;)

<on second thoughts I have no suggestions at all...>

Heh. You're incorrigible, yanno? :p

Or at least I hope so, for the most part. ;) Combined with "nice", it makes for a rather unique blend. :)

Nov-23-10  Nightranger: < looks like King Random has just ascended to the throne. Hopefully. ;) >

Maybe we'll just keep Ghostwheel around for a little bit longer.

Also, it's possible someone needs to check the co2 sensors in the forum.

Ginzburg (the way he actually spells his name) says not to play h6. I'm, uh, *convinced* that he's right. ;)

Well, my first classical time control tournament is now over (last week I was awarded a forfeit). Score 2/5, which would be almost ok, if it weren't for the forfeit thing. ;s

My repertoire needs work, of course.

What I don't like about this Haifa venue is that there are almost no players in the 1600-1900 bracket, which is the range I am most comfortable playing against, and can actually beat some of the time. Here we have strong players (2000-2300) and very weak ones (1600 and under). So for me this means not much chance when paired against one of the strong players, and nothing to be proud of in beating the bunnies. Meh.

Oh and another thing I'm annoyed about is that I tend not to resign, due to my blitz conditioning. I may have to try and overcome that sometime. :p

Nov-26-10  dakgootje: Perhaps I should blitz condition myself..

Currently when I have to play a game faster than 5+0 [especially against human opposition] my mind goes:

How did that horsie move again...

  Domdaniel: Just heard on the radio that the Carmel fires have stopped expanding, or been brought under control, or something.

Brennschluss, end-of-burning, might be the technical term, from rocket science. Engine stops burning, stops injecting thrust, missile becomes purely ballistic.

Current resonance clouds include (a) "where you walk is the empath ... they often get trodden on by unthinking soles..."; (b) my ex-djinn was evacuated from near Carmel because of fires, but that was in California - are places of that name particularly inflammable?

And the ice-snow blizzards *here* must be over the worst too, if the radio folk are bothering to mention Carmel fires rather than black ice and record minuses.

Hope you haven't been caramelized, sweet.

PS. Ping. I just got a strange text message from <mack> ... well, no stranger than usual, really ... vampires bots ate his email a/c ... and he's been having those CG dreams again. I recommend medication.

  Annie K.: <Deffi> thanks. :) I'm fine - I don't live on Mount Carmel now, but a nearby small town on the coastal plain. No danger here, at most I can see the smoke over the Carmel - the fire is on the other side of it.

That's a cute Quack you got there, and the pic clarity is great!

<Dom> yes, looks like they have the fires under control now, and starting to put them out. The one bright aspect in all this is the variety of the countries that sent aid.

<a> heh... well, it's not exactly like I can't take care of myself. ;)

Besides, the oversensitivity I'm prone to is to others' distress; like you, I tend not to be very sensitive on my own behalf.

<b> innaresting. Inflammable or flammable, for that matter? ;s

Hope you're not entirely frozen over there. Didja actually get snow too, or just ice?

Heh - I had a feeling the caramel pun would prove irresistible... ;)

So I'll do a honeybee dance, then, shall I? Remember to compensate for light polarization when decoding directions.
