This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  Annie K.: <Jess> I forgot to credit you as one of those who discussed the subcommunities issue - sorry. I was summarizing the posts I've had time to consider earlier, and just haven't digested your more recent contribution yet. :)

The sub-categories logistics... hmm. Complicated. I don't think they can be included in the main Caissar polling - too many options, too long a poll-sheet, and you get cross-eyed voters who forward the mail to the junk folder if received by mail, or just decide to go and do something else, if on site.

However, if the sub-communities wish to run their own elections and report the results to WannaBe, to include in his main announcements, that might be feasible.

Jan-08-11  rogge: Well, I have a suggestion. A caissar winner should have at least 10 votes in order to win (which is a ridiculously low number anyway). Then, I believe, we would've had only one or two winners this year (and for all I know no winners previous years).

Like Ohio said, it just doesn't matter. Whether it's bloc voting or a few friends scratching each other's backs.

Sorry for interrupting, but I understand this is the <Caissar think tank> ;)

<Jess> you're welcome, and that Polish series is excellently done. Some of the names are not pronounced perfectly - I noticed for example that while your friend got the "j" in Janowski and Aljekhine right (pronounced as "y"), he slipped with Bogoljubov. ;) And any "s" in Hungarian names should be pronounced "sh"... but that's just minor nitpicking, and the overall quality was really very high. Jan-09-11  NakoSonorense: To avoid "mass voting" for one candidate (like it happened with <Iskubadayb> this year), I would suggest holding one single voting day, so that everyone has to vote for all candidates, or else that voter's votes get canceled (kind of what <YouRang> does in his prediction contests).

I understand <WannaBe> likes having the voting spread over a few days, but this could potentially solve that problem. At least, it would make it fairer for candidates in other categories who don't get that many votes.

Just my $2/100s.

  jessicafischerqueen: Heh- I actually did learn most of the proper Polish pronunciations, but decided to make some compromises based on an English-speaking chess audience.

Remember when you suggested I use "Prague" instead of "Praha"?

For the same reason I used the most popular English pronunciations for the most famous players, such as

"Tart a Cower" In stead of "Tar ta Cahver"

And "Win OW er" instead of Vinn ah ver"

And "War saw" istead of "Vahr shahva".

Also, "Lods" instead of "Lodge".

Interestingly, the best source I found for Polish pronunciations of place names, and words in general, was <Shoah>, because it has so much Polish text with handy English subtitles.

I did not, however, know about the Hungarian "S"!

Thanks for that heads up. <Annie> would you mind taking a look/listen at my next video before I upload it? I should have asked for this one, but I spent so long on it with the "new feature" and my partner, I wanted to let it sink or swim on its own, if that makes any sense.

At any rate, Richard can't be held responsible for any of that- he did hundreds of re-takes based on what I wanted, exactly.

Very patient man...

<Keep them forums clean> arghhh I suppose as the biggest spammer at the site I can't complain about traffic in my forum that's put there for publicity.

But it took me five months to make that video and I want it, and reviews, to be on my front page for at least a couple of days.

  Annie K.: <Nako> an intriguing idea! I wouldn't limit the voting for one day - many people don't get to the site every day, and it would be too easy to miss the whole thing - but leaving the voting open for several days while requiring that every voter submit nominees for the full list of categories, or suffer disqualification... hmmm. Interesting. :)

<Jess: <ly be done if the woman weren't so bone idle...>>

Heh. Close enough! ;)

About the local vs best-known pronunciations of players and place names -

<Remember when you suggested I use "Prague" instead of "Praha"?>

Yup, I do. What prompted that was that somewhere - don't remember where - I read something like Charousek was born "in a small Czech town named Praha" - and realized that the writer simply had no clue that "Praha" was another name for the world-famous, and not exactly small, Prague. ;s

So I figured that it would be both simpler and more meaningful to use place names that people would recognize, and I still think so. However, <player names> are another kettle of fish altogether. :)

Thing is, you can't cram too much edjamacation into a few short videos, and the point isn't to teach your viewers geography after all; but the point <is> to teach them chess history! And there's no end to people plaintively inquiring all over the chess sites how the names of them "exotic" players should be pronounced... they really wanna know <that>! (BTW, congrats on getting both Euwe and Alekhine just right...) ;)

So, I think that, unlike place names, where you can just go with the best-known versions, player names should always be pronounced as <authentically> as possible - in fact, that's one of the greatest pluses of your new voice-over capabilities. (That and being able to impart a heckuva lot more running information than when you were limited to short captions...)

<I did not, however, know about the Hungarian "S"!>

You did, ackshly, we discussed that WRT Charousek... ;)

But here's a recap, with previously unmentioned details -

Hungarian s = English sh

always, <except> in the following two-letter combinations:

Hungarian cs = English ch

Hungarian sz = English s

Hungarian zs = French j, (AKA the English s in "treasure").

The last two are not to be confused - the order of the two letters obviously matters.

<Thanks for that heads up. <Annie> would you mind taking a look/listen at my next video before I upload it? I should have asked for this one, but I spent so long on it with the "new feature" and my partner, I wanted to let it sink or swim on its own, if that makes any sense.>

No worries! And you're always welcome to run anything by me - just lemme know when, what & where. :)

  jessicafischerqueen: Good grief- Thanks for the Hungarian reminder.

You know I think you're right. Because I can use print *and* vocal, all I have to do is make sure that the first time I use a correct pronunciation of a player name, I simultaneously show a photo of him/her with the name printed. Then there'd be no possibility of confusion on the part of the viewer.

Oh and yes after re-reading your other post-

I did in fact <simply miss> "Bogol YEW bov."

Ok then. I'll be back here much sooner than later <Annie> if that's OK- I have a slew of Czech and Russian player names to pronounce for the current project (Rossolimo), and your Euro-languages knowledge could well prove crucial...

I don't remember/think anyone made any kind of solid concrete suggestion(s) on how to 'solve' this problem, if there is one.

Unless, of course, I complete misread and missed out what was posted in your forum and DomDaniel's

Jan-12-11  hms123: <Wannabe> I noticed that many of the nominations contained a reason of sorts. Perhaps making the nominations slightly more formal: I nominate X because blah blah (ten words or less), or give a sample post (which would work for best analyst, best written post, and some other categories).

Perhaps this time was a bit of an aberration and we should wait to see if it goes away.

  WannaBe: <hms123> I mentioned in an earlier post, but not sure which forum, that the individual in question joined in Sept. 2009, and hence, he wasn't nominated for any of the Awards that was held in January 2010.

I also, I am fairly certain, that <wordfunph> did a lot of 'lobbying' for others to vote him, not that there is anything wrong with it.

No one ever said you can't encourage others to vote for a certain individual... (just annoys me when it's on my forum, and I am trying to tallying up the votes and have to sort through all the posts. =)

In U.S. hand bills within 100 yards of a polling place is not allowed/illegal. Maybe I can have some similiar rule next year, no lobbying posts within 10 meters of my forum! :-))

  Annie K.: <WannaBe: <I don't remember/think anyone made any kind of solid concrete suggestion(s) on how to 'solve' this problem, if there is one.>>

Well, for one thing, you suggested earlier that we start by discussing whether there is a problem, and if so, what it is.

I, among others, have replied to that. To recap, one main problem, which undeniably exists, is the ridiculously small voter pool - and in that context, I would suggest that you may want to reconsider your characterization of those comments as "grumbling", because, frankly, you should be grateful for them. After all these years the "Caissars" have been running, and despite a significant growth in site membership, the continued fact of a vanishingly small voter pool, which makes the whole Caissar "voting" rather farcical, indicates that this project is NOT going well as-is, to say the least - and these "grumblings" are your only clue as to what's wrong with it. You can be sure that for every such "grumbler", there are 200 or more others who will say nothing, but simply not bother to participate in the nominating and voting - "vote with their feet", as they call it.

There have also been various suggestions posted, quite a few, and quite good ones. So if that's all you got out of the comments, I would recommend that you read both forums again, carefully, only this time try to see the comments posted as help to you, rather than a challenge or a nuisance.
