This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  Annie K.: Greetings, visitors. You have arrived to space station --

-- no, wait, wrong script. OK, just the first part, then, about the greetings. Also, thanks, where applicable. :)

I just got home from a 5-round rapid tournament where I lost to 3 2000-rated players and one 2350, and beat a 1400-rated kid, who was playing much better than that, actually - darn underrated kids (and darn no-middle-class-venue, for that matter) - and I'm exhausted. If I manage to re-energize myself later tonight, I'll get to things here, <Jess>, otherwise tomorrow is another day. ;)

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> that sounds like a gruelling experience, must have been exhausting.

My respect for you as an active chess warrior has no bound- to be playing rated OTB chess against expert class players at rapid time control is <real chess>, and it's surprising how few of us chess addicts actually put ourselves on the line like that.

Fearless- you will forge newfound strength in that kind of crucible.

Jan-27-11
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: Hi <chancho>! Yes, I'm fine, thanks. :) You?

<Jess> thanks. :) Well, I'm actually <more> comfortable in rapid than in classical, against anybody - I have more confidence in being able to get away with my beloved tactical "cheapos". ;)

The thing people who never played OTB - like those morons over at IM & WGM Dembo's forum, who kept trying to make something of a comparison of OTB results to cc - don't really understand, is that OTB the name of the game is 'stress', rather than 'chess'. Sitting in a large room, opposite a real live opponent (who, you can be sure, at least in chessical terms, does <not> wish you well), and any number of spectators passing by, or worse, stopping and looking on... ticking clocks, uncomfortable chairs, too hot, too cold, etc. - is nothing, <nothing>, like playing online, while sitting in the privacy and leisurely comfort of your home. It's immensely more stressful - there is no comparison.

...BUT it's also more fun, and yes, "the real thing", and definitely worth it. :)

BTW, I decided a while ago not to announce here ahead of time when I'm going to play OTB, because simply knowing that then people will be waiting for the "report" on it afterwards, adds another stress level when I sit down to play. ;s

I play most weekends now, though, either classical or rapid.

<[...] and probably try to adopt you as well.>

Heh - maybe because I sound a lot younger on that one. ;) That's 'cos I raised the pitch to keep the "r" from sounding too rough, as the recording tends to render it, at my normal lower-pitched voice.

<Thanks for that TOP SECRET information about the admins plans. I'm glad of that and I wish them every success, let's be optimistic about it eh?>

Yup. Not top secret, btw - they posted about it here: chessgames.com chessforum. I email Daniel very rarely, ackshly. :)

<"Speaking" of languages, how's your German?>

Close to zero, and I'm not sure from which side, heh. But I can probably reproduce the sound and rhythm of it, with a bit of a reminder from some German-language youtube clip. :)

I really needed a reminder of what French "sounded like", and your explanation gave it - I usually know the "sterile" pronunciation of the letters, it's the rhythm and "character/flavor" of the language (where the accent goes in the words, what underlying "hidden vowels" to use for stringing together those letters - particularly strings of consonants - to produce an authentic-, rather than mechanical-sounding word...) that I mostly forget. And, actually, I don't think I'm very good in that regard with the Slavic languages... bear that in mind re. the Czech names.

I'll send you files for the two German names tomorrow. :)

  Domdaniel: <Jess> "Vooolf Gahngg OON-tzikker", and you can't go wrong.

German pretty 'normal' ist, apart from like Yoda sprechen.

Plus 'W' is pronounced like English 'V', and 'Z' is 'TZ'. And 'J' is like an Anglo 'Y', but almost all civilized languages do that.

If one has a particularly English accent, Etienne is somewhere between 'Esh Yen' and 'It Yearn'. But *that* accent is noted for disappearing sounds - not only have the Anglos done away with 'R', they no longer distinguish between 'W' and 'WH'. Not even the Prince of Whales.

BTW, at that chess tournament I heard several players touch pieces and mutter 'adjust' or 'I adjust'. Not that I'm well-adjusted myself, but what's wrong with "j'adoube" ... ?

Or Zhad Ewb, even.

<Annie> Hi babes, I reckon this qualifies as 'later'. So, uh, Linares?

  Domdaniel: All these minor glitches here lately ... d'you reckon the system has reached critical mass, or is it a temporary effect caused, for example, by Mr Freeman taking a vacation?

Laud knows he deserves one.

Laud - the Anglican Bishop of that name, not the deity - has as good a claim as anyone to be the inventor of America, as his persecutions caused 17th century puritans to flee there. We've seen the result.

And yet they persist with Columbus Day - a 19th century innovation to commemorate a Mediterranean mercenary who thought he'd found Chipango.

A perverse tribe, the Murricans. Vess Pootchie woulda had fits.

  Domdaniel: <A> Totally agree w/you about the astonishing stress of an OTB tournament. And yet it's the only kind I play -- I can't take computers or online opponents seriously, and I don't warm up fast enough for a one-off club game.

But rounds 3 and 4 of a 6-round swiss? Then I'm dangerous.

But you knew that, dear.

  Annie K.: <Jess> just sent you the files. :)

<chancho> hope you'll feel better than "so and so" soon. Daughter is on vacation, or finished her studies there?

<Dom: <BTW, at that chess tournament I heard several players touch pieces and mutter 'adjust' or 'I adjust'. Not that I'm well-adjusted myself, but what's wrong with "j'adoube" ... ?

Or Zhad Ewb, even.>>

How about a compromise: j'adjust? ;)

<Laud knows he deserves one.>

Laud knows he <needs> one, anyway. I hope it's a vacation, and not a mental breakdown or something. ;s

<Vess Pootchie woulda had fits.>

Heh. Cor Tess mighta had a few choice words to say about it too.

<And yet it's the only kind I play -- I can't take computers or online opponents seriously, and I don't warm up fast enough for a one-off club game.>

I never play computers, and I don't take online opponents very seriously either, that's just for fun and practice. :)

BTW, I've had another bunch of fun French games recently - IOW, opponents who managed to find amusingly horrible ways to self-destruct, with just a little help from me. ;p

And yes, the "warm up" issue - a very real phenomenon for me too. I have an online blitz habit of losing my first two games of the day, before the chess mental functions kick in - unfortunately, the tradition tends to carry over to OTB, which is not very good for "just" 5- or 6-round rapid tourneys (played all in one day). Or the openings in classical games. :s

I also dropped out of the club scene since I started tournament play - no time nor "need" for both, at the moment. And that reminds me, I was going to add that "mere" club games are not much like rated tournament games either, stress-wise.

<But rounds 3 and 4 of a 6-round swiss? Then I'm dangerous.>

Seems to be my best phase too. :)

I would happily listen to you lecture for hours on any subject- so might a lot of others.

I'd suggest being a "spokesperson" but that doesn't really apply because your own discourse has <actual content>, which is more than can be said for the discourse of a few really strange people around these parts.

Recently, I noticed- I may well ask you about this in private, out of curiosity.

At any rate, the new names sound wonderful- added to the growing folder of proper chess master pronunciations.

I hope you are also saving the files because why not a CD?

  Domdaniel: <Jess> I'm now attempting your job in reverse -- bleedin' typical innit -- by applying orthoepical methods to the great names of English chess.

Howard Staunton = Harvard's Downturn

Henry Bird = Ennery Beuhd

Ray Keene = Rake Eeny

Anthony Miles = Toni Meiss

Nigel Short = Najdorf Shawshank/ Nial's Heart/ Nosher/ usw.

Michael Adams = Micky Add ems/ Mikhaila Damns

Of course in practice 'Nigel' and 'Michael' are pronounced almost identically. A trained phoneticist will note that the initial nasal sound uses a different nostril in each case, and that the central syllable is a polite cough in both names, but more polite in Nigel.

Annie isn't the only one with a sexy voice, yanno. When I get around to recording the complete works of Myles na Gopaleen I'll send you an mp49.
