This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

<<<<<<< MAJOR CHESS SITES <<>>>>>>>>>

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

Here the cute thing was that 23.Nxh6 wins a pawn, but 23.Qxh6 wins the Bishop as well. *And* getting the Q's off simplifies the endgame, which is also good for me at that point. Of course BxQ wasn't forced, but I expect a 1200 player to be unable to resist the bait. ;p

On other matters, I haven't moved to the new apartment yet, there's been a lot of preparation to get in first... should be winding that operation up in another week, then I may have more time and energy to do stuff and hang around here again. :)

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> what an entertaining game-

This is my favorite move, by far:

Annie (white) to play...

9.Nf1?!

Why castle when you can reserve that key <f1 square> for the Knight?

This is indeed sweet as you say-

Annie (White) to play:

23.Qxh6?????

And yep I'd wager there are plenty of folk well over 1200 who will accept an <exceedingly temporary queen sac> in a Blitz game.

This is where <chesstempo> training really comes in handy- "spot the forking square in .00001 seconds" is indeed valuable training for such a game as this.

Later, you "give back" your extra bishop, for three pawns, for this endgame:

The old "7-1 Pawn ploy" eh?

  Annie K.: <Jess> nice to see you around!

Thanks for looking at the game. :)

<9.Nf1?!>

Heh. I play that Nbd2-Nf1-Ng3 maneuver pretty regularly, and of course it has to come before castling, otherwise I'd have to play Re1 to vacate f1 for the N to complete its route, and that's not really a part of my favorite setup. Haven't noticed any serious drawbacks to this line so far. :)

<This is where <chesstempo> training really comes in handy- "spot the forking square in .00001 seconds" is indeed valuable training for such a game as this.>

Exactly, although it's <Emrald> training in my case. ;)

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> aha yes it's <Emrald> that forces you to lose points on time limit.

<chess tempo> more of a puzzle solving site- find the best continuation, not penalized for time.

It's been a year now since I did any tactics training on those sites.

The latest batch of Russian names is wonderful- please extend my thanks also to your tame Russian.

I think we should credit him for research in the video? Would you please ask him if that's OK, and if so, can we use his real name?

So far all the research on <Nezh> has been done by me, you, "The Russian," and Owls.

Regarding your EMU, yes, I suspected something like that- I'll send you a return EMU sooner rather than later.

This week I have to deal with the dread Korean immigration department to extend my visa.

Thanks to three (count them- three) Canadian "teachers" being caught molesting Korean schoolgirls over the past five years, including this year, Canadians are now subject to the most stringent vetting at immigration.

This sickens me- is Canada the "new Catholic Church" or something?

What's up with that?

At any rate I'm furious. At the sick criminals who came here I mean.

Who can blame Korea. If they had any sense they'd deport all foreigners immediately.

The place is 99.99999 percent Korean anyway. Who needs foreigners?

In the case of my countrymen, "the enemy is us."

  Annie K.: <Jess> I'll ask Vladimir if he'd like to be credited.

Hungary certainly does have much chess activity - and other cultural highlights as well. If you want to move there, I can help you learn the language! :)

Ok then let's leave the final decision on Mr. Sandler up to you, when the time comes.

  Annie K.: <Jess> I think he can be credited, as long as it's clear that I'm responsible for any mispronunciations that may have slipped in on the way. :)

I can't see any security/privacy issues, as his online presence is otherwise zero, so there's nothing to connect the dot *to*.

Looking forward to EMU, btw. ;)

  jessicafischerqueen: LOL then he is a rather clever dot if you ask me. I think you and the few others who post "yourself" here are quite brave really.

I will hit you up this weekend- It's midterms here and the students and my fellow teachers are all climbing the walls, which is pretty exhausting to watch, I can tell you.

I have some TOP SECRET information that's actually not secret at all.

Incidentally, have you ever listened to a "hear book"?

I've listened to two so far, one by Garry Kasparov and another quite good novel about a chess murder mystery.

Which was spoiled by someone reading it out to me.

However, if you ever get insomnia get some "hear books".

Highly recommended.

Heh - yeah, I listened to books... before I learned to read. Of course there were no audiobooks back then - they would have scared the mammoths - but that's what family is for, nesspah? ;)

  jessicafischerqueen: As a cryptozoology enthusiast, I'm very pleased to hear that there are recent Mammoth sightings in Israel!

QUESTION: Could there really be a secret plateau in South America with dinosaurs on it?

Quite right <Annie> I don't really get the current format of "hear books."

The <Kasparov> hear book would have been great if Garry had done the reading.

But agreed, family members and other loved ones are the best "book readers" available.

Having such folk read to you is one of the best ways to fall asleep quickly, for example.

That gentle, reassuring drone of love is a much healthier soporific than, say, oxycontin.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> in other news, I made a 20 second youtube video for the purpose of posting your pronunciation of <Rashid Nezhmetdinov> on his player page.

There's a person asking for the correct pronunciation there.

However, I wouldn't post something like this without your permission first.

So the video is currently set to "private" and I've added your youtube ID to the list of people allowed to hear it (that would be a list of one- just you).

I uploaded it from my "back up back up" youtube account which is this:

http://www.youtube.com/user/alecksa...

And this is the link to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G60a...

Let me know if you are indeed able to see/hear the video? I'm pretty sure I spelled your youtube name properly.

Then it will be your decision if it's ok to post the video on <Nezh's> profile.

I notice they took down the test version of your "Vassily Smyslov" from his profile page.

Were you aware of that?

  Annie K.: Hey, <Jess>!

The mammoths would have had to have been in Transylvania, chronologically speaking, since I only immigrated to Israel (ya, that sounds as if that was my idea??) at 8, and I learned to read rather a long time before that. ;p

Very good job on the Rossolimo videos - just watched'em. :)

He's had quite an eventful life, and a great deal of chess talent.

I can't access the Nezhmetdinov video though?! ;)

I didn't notice the admins took down the audio beta, but I'm sure they'll get back to that project, they seem to have really liked the idea. I'll ask them for an update sometime.
