This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> thanks for recent EMU-

I haven't finished reading <Pot 'O Gold> yet, in fact I haven't started. Do you recommend reading it in chronological order?

I think I'll start with page 1 and go from there.

On the other news, thanks for the new kittens, and with regard to <Black Jacques Shellack>, he's likely to be a much better judge than me on that name.

I think you should strike the colors on that one until we can get a confirmation.

After work today, I'm going to try to find a native speaker saying his name, I have a feeling it won't be that hard.

In the long run- what we really want, and need- is a native pronunciation of every single European city that ever held a chess tournament.

We have lots of Russian ones thanks to you and <Vladimir>. But we'll need a set of Hungarian, Czech, and Yugoslavian ones too.

Might get tricky when there are cities with 4 or more different pronunciations depending on who lived there and when.

However, anything other than standard English pronunciation is better than nothing that's for sure.

What do we know for sure? We know the English pronunciations are all totally incorrect.

Does this have to do with cultural imperialism? I think it does.

Just ask poor <Don Quixote>.

I almost fell out of my chair when I first heard my Commonwealth literature professor say "Don Kwag-zutt."

But that was indeed the "accepted" English pronunciation.

They didn't care much for Catholics or Spaniards back in the day. Probably don't today either.

Ok back later, after work.

  Annie K.: <I almost fell out of my chair when I first heard my Commonwealth literature professor say "Don Kwag-zutt.">

Owwwch. Last I heard, it was Don Kee-khaw-teh, or rather similar. One might go with "Key Hottie", almost. ;)

Innaresting idea on the cities... hmm. I don't think I'd want them on the main list though. Here's an idea: I might publish them as "private but free access if one has the link", then collect them into a playlist, and then publish the playlist - as a sort of subchannel.

Not sure I'll pull Bacrot just yet - <Dom> seems to like it too, and I didn't hear any complaints from <Switch> - yet ;) - or anybody else for that matter, either, and we have plenty of Europeans here, who should have a pretty good idea. <dakkie>, what do you think about the Bacrot pronunciation? :)

One person <claiming to be> French... Inconclusive.

K, laterz then - I have tomorrow and Wednesday off work (holidays) so I may catch up with smore things. I read the TOP SECRET MATERIAL, btw, very interesting. :)

  jessicafischerqueen: What if <Dom> is secretly posting as a "faux frenchman"?

<Annie> I didn't mean chess city names for your youtube channel, I meant for future chess history documentaries, including the two you've been working on with me. The next two to appear, if I ever start writing the Nezh script. Possibly this is the wrong forum to say this, but I have to stop procrastinating on that.

On the other hand, as I was telling the Major, I did in fact find several new and ultra-rare photos of the <Loch Nezh Monster> at the chess board.

The documentary didn't get where it is today (unproduced) without me looking for "just one more" photo.

Future project in mind, already collecting data, is <Gligoric and Yugoslavian Chess>.

I've organized folders to collect the data as I find it, because I have so many sources now that I have to mine each one thoroughly or I'll never remember what I saw where, exactly.

At some future point this will mean I can make a bunch of films in a quick period of time. Maybe. I like being a teacher but if someone offered to pay me full time to work on chess history I would like that too.

Anyways if you made another youtube channel for "chess city names" I think that would have a more general appeal outside of the "chess fan crowd."

It might be a "hit channel." I agree about not wanting to lose the focus of your existing CHESS NAME PRONUNCIATION channel (now in color!):

http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I have five youtube channels, but nobody actually watches any of the videos except for on the main channel.

I look forward to TOP SECRET material, be especially wary of this <Domdaniel> character.

He once told me he was a business associate of the cow that started the Great Chicago Fire.

I'm not saying he wasn't, mind you.

In addition, he actually never said that to me.

I hope this has cleared up a few important matters.

  jessicafischerqueen: "Mrs. McCarthy's cow."

I think that's right, but I'm too lazy to check my facts on the google. Knocked over a candle with her tail, or something. The cow, not Mrs. McCarthy.

Maybe it was "Mrs. O'Herlihy's cow."

And did it start the Great Chicago Fire or the Great San Francisco Earthquake?

Possibly <Dom> can shed light on this vital historical matter.

It's perfectly fine to <say> that. All good procrastinators say that. Often. ;)

<Anyways if you made another youtube channel for "chess city names" I think that would have a more general appeal outside of the "chess fan crowd.">

Heh. I didn't get where I am today - perfectly easy to track - by having multiple accounts on any site. ;p

I'll try that playlist, first anyway, and see how it goes. I'm very pleased with the steadily growing audience of my channel, anyhoo. I get a hundred or so views, and a couple of new subscribers every day - at 30 now, and it hasn't been long at all, nor that many videos uploaded yet.

Oh, yeah, and page 1 is usually a good place to start reading. :)

In fact, I have played this line in one of my first OTB club games, and my opponent, an experienced player, took the pawn too, and told me after the game that he was not familiar with this opening maneuver. Online blitz experience apparently hath its benefits. Fond memory. ;)

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> I looked in to it a bit- there is something about <Bacrot> that's clearer after you and <dom's> discussion.

Your "Etienne" is more Quebec Jouel than Parisienne Frogge, but the "Bacrot" is more Parisienne Frogge than Jouel.

So it's a hybrid. Maybe that's what "pepe le pew" was complaining about on your youtube channel.

However maybe not- I really think you or anyone else is ever going to find the "one true pronunciation" for any name because it doesn't exist.

<Switch>, the hardest taskmaster I know of on "getting it right" emphasized the problem with different pronunciations even within native speaking communities. I can tell you first hand that there are distinct differences in French pronunciation in Montreal that can be defined by what neighborhood, or even what street, the person lives in.

That said, I do think it important to find the most accurate and perhaps most widely used native pronunciation as a source model.

Obviously you are the judge for your own channel- which is a good thing, I'm very comfortable trusting your judgment, since I know you well enough to know how diligent you are.

As for my use of your work in chess history videos, let's face it Richard (long suffering and patient) isn't ever going to be able to make his mouth say the names like you can.

He doesn't have a "European mouth," although his DNA might carry the secret code deep within.

Anyways I'm obsessive about this which is part of the fun for me.

I've just been listening to your Russian names side by side with the Google translator versions, and they are remarkably similar in most every case.

Or so it seems to my "cloth ears."

I have cloth ears and Richard has a cloth mouth.

For this reason, when we go to dinner parties, Richard listens while I do all the speaking.

I'm telling myself that's the reason for this arrangement.

Jun-08-11
Premium Chessgames Member
  Domdaniel: <Jess> There exists a technique called "mouth-to-mouth desperation" whereby a person's mouth can be made more European. I wouldn't recommend such extreme measures yet, though.

French people wear a face-brace in childhood so that they can sneer at everyone else when they grow up.

Also, anyone who fails to listen when you're speaking is a fool, which the boy Richard clearly isn't.

I can pronounce "Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander" in the style of Cork (where he was born), Birmingham (where he went to school) or 1940s Received Pronunciation aka old-fashioned British Posh (which he would dem well have expected).
