This profile needs an update badly, but I don't have the time... :)

My YouTube channel, featuring pronunciations of non-English chess player names: http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1...

I'm 45 y/o, of Transylvanian origin, living in Israel since childhood. I speak English (no, really), Hungarian (great language!), and Hebrew (if I must, which is often, for some reason).

Afflicted with an uncontrollable sense of humor and other highly controversial characteristics.

I learned chess as a child, but had no further opportunities to practice the game. Returned to it seriously around 2004, and have been hanging out here since.

Note: if I am not home (i.e., here), you can probably find me at the Domdaniel chessforum, the SwitchingQuylthulg chessforum, the visayanbraindoctor chessforum, or the chessgames.com chessforum! :)

<<<<<<< MAJOR CHESS SITES <<>>>>>>>>>

< ChessWorld -> http://www.chessworld.net

ChessWorld is my new main chess playing base. It's a rather restrictive site for non-paying members, but one of the best sites for paying members. The full features include excellent interface options and first class study and analysis resources. Nice community, likeable admin. Paid membership recommended.

< Update: while I will leave the original entry for ChessWorld as-is, I have by now been a member of the site for 2 years, and am now an admin there. I still think the site is one of the best, and the <other> admins are nice. :p >

My ChessWorld profile: http://www.letsplaychess.com/chessc...

< Queen Alice -> http://www.queenalice.com

Queen Alice is a charming site - well behaved players, decent admin, site design visually very pleasant. It is also completely free. Unfortunately, it lacks team play, the interface and resources are relatively simple, and it can be frustratingly slow (loading times). Nevertheless warmly recommended.

My QueenAlice profile: http://www.queenalice.com/player.ph...

< GameKnot -> http://gameknot.com

GameKnot is technically an excellent site, however I would not recommend it to the serious player who is looking for a site to settle in, due to an anti$ocial admin with ju$t one $ingle intere$t in hi$ $ite... oop$, $orry about the typo$.

My GameKnot profile: http://gameknot.com/stats.pl?annie-....

<< Other chess sites <<<<<<>>>>>>>>

< FICS - the Free Internet Chess Server -> http://www.freechess.org

FICS is a great site to play chess at various faster time controls. There are a few difficulties getting started with it - first, it can be hard to find an email they will accept for registration; and second, there's a lot of site code to learn. But it's worth the hassle. :)

< ChessCube -> http://www.chesscube.com

ChessCube is quite good for fast time control games - provided you have a strong computer with broadband, as the site is entirely Flash based, which means it takes considerable computer resources to load. The site is nominally free, but heavily commercialized with all sorts of frills that can be purchased on it.

< Emrald Chess Tactics Server -> http://chess.emrald.net

Emrald is not a playing site - it is an invaluable tactical training asset. The only problem with it is also the difficulty of finding an "acceptable" email address to register with; but once past that hurdle, the site deserves nothing but praise.

It's a completely free site. You can play (practice) there as a guest, but they recommend registering, so that their program can keep track of your progress, in order to assign you puzzles best suited to your current level. I strongly second that recommendation. Register and always play logged in! It will make a huge difference in the site's ability to help you improve. An issue that scares some people off Emrald is that your progress is tracked via a "rating system", and because of the high importance they assign to speed, if you are not used to finding tactics fast, your rating will be very low at first - and many people are simply embarrassed to play logged in for that reason. Don't let it bother you! If you let embarrassment hold you back from letting the site help you improve to the best of its ability, you are only shooting yourself in the foot, and nobody else really cares that much anyway. ;p

A few of the people I've recommended Emrald to, had dropped it after a brief trial with remarks along the lines of "Oh, it's a blitz training site. I don't play blitz, so I don't like their obsession with speed." That reaction is absolutely wrong - and it's also one that many people who try the site out for only a short time are likely to have, if only because players who are used to being rated, say, 2000 and above, at corr. chess sites, are going to be annoyed and put on the defensive about finding themselves rated as low as 1200-1300 at Emrald, and will wish to dismiss the "insulting" site.

Yes, the Emrald rating system is heavily influenced by speed. But thinking that the site's purpose is blitz training is a complete misunderstanding of the lesson taught. The real purpose of Emrald practice is not to improve your blitz skills, but to train you to recognize dozens of tactical themes and opportunities AT A GLANCE - which will not only save you time in games of any time control, but is often the only way you will catch them AT ALL. Those brilliant tactical shots that can be seen in anyone's collection of "most memorable games", are often moves that will either occur to you as soon as you glance at the position, or you will miss them altogether. That's what Emrald really teaches - tactical chess intuition.

<Intuition in chess can be defined as the first move that comes to mind when you see a position. --- <Viswanathan Anand>>

<Personally, I am of the view that if a strong master does not see such a threat at once he will not notice it, even if he analyses the position for twenty or thirty minutes. --- <Tigran Petrosian >>

  SwitchingQuylthulg: <Annie> Any update on Gideon Ståhlberg?

(Don't worry, I'm not Getting Impatient or anything untoward like that. I just wanted to post something someplace - I'm sure <jfq> can enlighten us on the official medical term for that condition - and your forum is one of the last remaining castles of insanity.)

  Annie K.: Thanks, <Thanh>, nice to get feedback.

<Switch> hi there!! I missed seeing you around here, ackshy. Just because I'm a couple of weeks overdue with that video retake, doesn't mean I don't want to talk to you meanwhile! ;)

Look around, see if there's any particularly tasty bit of insanity you'd like to gnaw on, etc. :)

I've recently posted an exposé on the long held Russian TOP SECRET of the mysterious <Cheshire Y>, for one thing.

As for Ståhlberg, I just posted this at Dom's place a few days ago:

< [...] the reason I haven't published a Ståhlberg video yet is that <Switch> doesn't seem to be pleased with my pronunciation - not of 'Ståhlberg', but of 'Gideon'! ;s

Apparently, I am still not saying <YEEEE> convincingly enough. Nobody told me I would need experience acting in class-D horror movies for this job?! ;p >

Heh - I hope to work on that and a few others again this weekend.

Heh. Of course you're worth listening to, as well - otherwise I wouldn't risk talking to you! You see, I've tended to notice that when I talk to somebody, that runs a certain risk of their answering... so I try not to do it, if such a thing would be an undesirable side effect. :p

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> thanks for that TOP SECRET spageddy western tip! I'll be downloading that one, never seen it before.

Where did you find that great photo of <Ufmitsev>?

Will you tell me where you found it?

I need to know...

My favorite element is fire. Does that count?

Jun-28-11
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: <Switch> I think there are quite a few playing hydrogen actually, but it's a silent part... :p

Remember that the current show is really a rerun, but the original series had been mostly pulled from the air immediately after the first season. ;)

No hurry on the movie, I think. Doesn't look like they'll pull it soon, although somebody else had uploaded it last year too, and that one was deleted, along with the user account. However, it's possible that that user got into trouble over some other movie, so dunno.

Anyhoo, I think it's more than worth the time to watch it - more below. :)

<Jess> I found the Ufimtsev photo simply on Google Images, and by trying to avoid Winter's domain, lest he throw a fit over credits. ;p That pic was all over Google Images for Anatoly Ufimtsev - I can't remember which source I actually downloaded it from, but it was one of the largest versions. Too small to come out really well at "YouTube size" as is, but passable. :)

The spageddy western in question is really more of a parody of spaggedy westerns than a mere specimen - at least it was meant to be one, originally - but when Henry Fonda and Terence Hill got together, they simply couldn't help turning out something wonderful in the end, despite the original intentions for it to be just funny. I love that movie, and with Ennio Morricone's music, it's magic. :)

Jun-28-11

  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> doh!

I've never seen <Mr. Winter> complain about images that may or may have not come from his website. He never complained to me anyways. At any rate, he does give provenance and thanks to contributors on the photos he puts on his own website.

As you know, if someone *really* doesn't want anyone to hotlink their photos, they can easily block the hotlink function. Really easily.

You're probably right but it's sort of hard to tell, on account of they if any are silent :)

The most senior speaking role is that of helium... Present mostly in stars, this light gas likes to look at things from above and only forms compounds under very unusual circumstances. Its few lines don't get the respect they deserve, probably because of the squeaky voice. I'm inclined to think the producers only threw helium in for comic relief.

  jessicafischerqueen: Also, I've found the chess history buff web community to be extraordinarily generous.

Case in point Sarah Beth (batgirl). I think she got tired of me constantly asking her if it was ok to use her research and photo links, so she finally said anything she writes or posts is for the public consumption.

She said it better than that though.

I'm not a "writer" per se.

Jun-28-11
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: <Jess> oh, I'm not criticizing Winter, really. :) His site is a fantastic resource, and much appreciated - and he has every right to expect to be credited. But when I'm just looking for some visual background for my audios, I don't really have the patience to go around asking for usage permissions or to worry about phrasing credits.

Hotlinking is certainly out of the question - that's called 'bandwidth theft', quite the antisocial practice. I first download anything I want to use. Credits and copyrights are the remaining issue.

<Switch> heh... very good. :)

Jun-28-11
Premium Chessgames Member
  jessicafischerqueen: <Annie> there's a colloquial use of the word "hotlinking" that means simply downloading any photo off the internet onto your hard drive.

As I'm sure you know, it's easy to prevent this- art sites, photographer sites, and some blogs prevent this. It's easy to do. It physically prevents anyone from downloading the image.

It's more effective than watermarking a photo, or presenting it in low resolution.

I knew about bandwidth theft, but had never heard it called "hotlinking"?

Maybe I got this word mixed up with another one.

I'm with you on this of course. I'd go even further- I don't have any patience at all, period, for anything.

Which is a little strange considering what an appalling procrastinator I am. Seems like a contradiction.

I can live with it though!

Jun-28-11
Premium Chessgames Member
  Annie K.: <Jess> "hotlinking / bandwidth theft" is more like when you actually *embed* in your site, or in your posts (or signature, or avatar at some sites...) an image that is actually being hosted by somebody else, so that any view/loading of the image will count for <his> bandwidth usage (which can mean actual money, if his own host isn't a free one). Embedded images are an html function even I know - and I hardly know any html. :)

<It's more effective than watermarking a photo, or presenting it in low resolution.>

Well not really. Yeah, you can't <download> it then, but there's a very simple way to get around it, which I won't mention here, since I don't want to give anybody ideas. ;)
