Jul-22-18  WinKing: Here comes the Epic game. Enter Kovalev & Kramnik. 3 moves to go. How fitting...the last game.
Jul-22-18  morfishine: <sydbarrett> I had Navarra too and was licking my chops, but alas it melted away like an early spring snow

  chessgames.com: About the Dortmund exotics:

EPIC GAME was settled as "YES" because of V Kovalev vs Kramnik, 2018.

UNDERPROMOTION was settled as "NO". The only promotion whatsoever was A Giri vs J K Duda, 2018 and it was of the normal queen-variety.

Dortmund turned out to be a OOO-fest, as the LONG CASTLING was settled as "EIGHT OR MORE TIMES." There were 6 games with long castling, two of which had double-long-castlings, so they count twice. The games are:

R Wojtaszek vs G Meier, 2018
Nisipeanu vs J K Duda, 2018
I Nepomniachtchi vs Nisipeanu, 2018 (x2)
J K Duda vs G Meier, 2018
V Kovalev vs Nisipeanu, 2018 (x2)
A Giri vs J K Duda, 2018

These were fun bets, expect some exotics to appear for upcoming Biel games.

Jul-22-18  morfishine: <chessgames.com> Thank you for the exotics, they truly add a welcome flavor to the wagering!
Jul-23-18  sydbarrett: I woke up literally only 4 minutes before the start of today's round and as a result my betting strategy doesn't make sense lol. Tomorrow...
Jul-23-18  Marmot PFL: was 2 bets from being broke, top 3 to flat broke in a week. carlsen and svidler came through but that probably just delays the inevitable until tomorrow.

Chessgames Bookie: Biel round 4 has some exotic bets under the theme of "Every Russian Schoolboy Knows"

Biel Round 4: Castle Early and Often

Biel Round 4: Knights before Bishops

Biel Round 4: All Rook and Pawn endings are drawn

I think the bets are self-explanatory (when you read the explanation). Good luck!

FSR: <Bookie> I am unclear on the "all rook endings are drawn" bet. First, does it refer to endings where each side has exactly one rook, at least one side has a pawn or pawns, and neither side has a bishop, knight, or queen? It doesn't encompass endings where only one side has a rook and the other side just has pawns, right? Nor to rook versus rook with no pawns? Nor to two rooks and pawns versus two rooks and pawns (unless the game later simplifies to a covered situation with only one rook apiece)?

Second, what happens if there are no endings meeting the definition in Round 4? Is that considered an answer that falls under "YES (no Rook and pawn endings arrive at a decisive result)" or does this result in everyone's money being refunded?

FSR: <Bookie> In the "Knights before bishops" bet, one of the possibilities is "NO (Somebody moves a bishop although the knights are untouched.)" Does "the knights" in that bet refer to ALL knights on that board, or only to the knights of the player who moves the bishop? I assume the latter, but it is a little unclear.
Jul-24-18  morfishine: <Bookie> I'm too am confused by the 'rook bet' since (a) Yes "no Rook and pawn endings arrive at a decisive result" & (b) No "all Rook and pawn endings end up in draws" seem to mean the same thing (notwithstanding <FSR>'s comments which confuse me further)...

& I'm also confused by the 'Knights bet' verbage which makes me want to break into a rendition of 'Who's on First?'

best, morf

FSR: <morfishine> Quite so. Don't know how I didn't see that.

Penguincw: So regarding Biel Round 4: All Rook and Pawn endings are drawn.

Which line will pay in each of the 3 results?

- None of the games end in R+P ending.
- Any R+P ending(s) end in draw.
- At least 1 R+P ending is decisive.

The last 2 I can probably figure it out, but how about the first one?

FSR: <Penguincw> I have no idea how you can figure out the answer to any of your three scenarios. As <morfishine> pointed out, <YES (no Rook and pawn endings arrive at a decisive result)> and <NO (all Rook and pawn endings end up in draws)> appear to be the same thing.

  Penguincw: <FSR>

Okay I read it again, and the lines are confusing. But what I did read was the question in the info box, < "Will any of the round 4 games ... wherein a player converts a R+P ending into a win?" > and based it off from that.

FSR: Geez. I bet on everyone castling, everyone developing knights before bishops, and Carlsen beating the guy who had lost all his games. I was the favorite on all three bets, but I lost every one.

Penguincw: And we're awaiting the results of that rook+pawn ending bet. But does every Russian schoolboy know that opposite coloured bishop endings tend to be drawn?

Tomorrow is someone's birthday. So are we gonna celebrate with all the exotics in the world, or no exotics?
