Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Frogspawn: Levity's Rainbow

Kibitzer's Corner
< Earlier Kibitzing  · PAGE 957 OF 963 ·  Later Kibitzing>
May-07-19  mckmac: <Jess> That's a crackling plan. Dom would have been chuffed.

But you should take the helm of the good ship Frogspawn for this one. She is back sailing the seas, and with <WhiteShark> just spotted surfing the bow wave, we can look forward to a safe passage.

A Navigator of only the quickest wit and finest sensibilities will be required for this voyage, and I don't think I quite qualify.

Please say yes, or we'll have to send The Pressed Ham Gang around. I am told you can tell them by their tattoos. Three little pigs on one shoulder (🐖🐖🐖) and two frogs (🐸🐸) on the other. Their motto "Take No Pensioners" is said to be situated somewhere unmentionables.

I surrender. I should have known not to tangle with one of the three (3) top "theme punsters" at cg.com.

Although I might add that in the ultimate showdown on "fish-related" puns, <Big Crawdaddy> came clear first, with you and <hms123> deadlocked for second.

I had to commend all three of you for competing so ferociously, while never letting the contest degenerate into a piscing match.

The killer combination in this affair, if I remember correctly, was <Big Crawdaddy's> report that

"Bass make the best employees, because they will work for scale."

<HeMateMe> Excellent idea!

This sounds exactly like the kind of "report" <Dom> would appreciate, given his addiction to dirty limericks. We peppered his forum with pages of dirty limericks until the admins locked his forum- and forced <Dom> to delete every single "off color" reference of any kind from his forum.

Now <Dom> had spent a good 5 years amassing such fare *before* we ran the dirty limerick report, so it took him over a week to get rid of everything.

"We'll laugh about this later," I reassured him.

Meanwhile, I didn't have to actually *do* anything while, <Dom> worked manly 12 hour days to get his forum out of jail.

<Frogspawn> has reached the impressive total of 956 pages.

I see no reason why this should ever stop.

I don't know if "Ad astra" was one of <Dom's> mottos, but it wouldn't surprise me if it had been.

May-08-19  Boomie: <Jessicafischerqueen: I surrender.>

I won't take any more credit for this great victory than I deserve.

Thanks to the Academy for their faith in my powers and for voting my way after I paid them. The pastry is in the mail.

May-08-19  mckmac: Congratulations to <Boomie> for an outstanding win in the punting race.

Showing all that the direct approach is sometimes best, the North West Cruiserweight Champion clinched the title with this spektacular ol' one-two-three shot.

Game Nominations

1.<Diademas> K Alekseenko vs B Savchenko, 2018

2.<Count Wedgemore> Yifan Hou vs Mamedyarov, 2018

3.<OhioChessFan> N Nestorovic vs G Meier, 2018

4.<HeMateMe>Z Harari vs N Zhukova, 2018

5.<Check It Out> C Yip vs T Abrahamyan, 2019

6. <JessicaFischerQueen> & <WhiteShark> Gerardo Artola Pola vs J Arnott, 2018

I'd like to leave the contest open to nominations until the 23rd of this month. We might get lucky and nab one or two late entrants. And if we don't - too bad. Six games will make a match of it, and I would like to thank the participants and our kibitzers.

I have a couple of thoughts on how we might best and most fairly judge the competition. But I would first like to invite all entrants to express their views on this.

May-09-19  mckmac: Woops - I missed the links to the first five games. They can be found here:

<Diademas> D Rovner vs Tal, 1955

<Jess> Are you definitely going with Fischer vs Tal, 1960?

---

Note: I am withdrawing my nomination for this game. My excuse for picking it is that, at the time, I was not entirely sober - or maybe tired or something. So that's what I'm saying and I'm sticking to it! Hector vs Short, 1983

Yes, I'm definitely going with Fischer vs Tal, 1960 , with one proviso-

If <Tim> uses this entry as an invitation to re-ignite the infamous "fish-related pun contest" that he lost against <Big Crawdaddy>, I would like my <Fischer> selection to be put in escrow, provided that <Tim> does not take this as an even feather opportunity to swoop in with a new "bird related" pun contest.

I'm not against theme-related pun contests, but they can beakome tiresome at times. I'd like this French Defence contest to come in on time and on budgie.

May-09-19  mckmac: Thanks <Diademas>, and apologies to the <Count>.

<Count Wedgemore> Reshevsky vs Vaganian, 1976

May-09-19  mckmac: <Jess> Don't worry - if <Boomie> tries to distract us from our lofty goal, we shall swoop on him like a hawk.
May-09-19  Boomie: <If <Tim> uses this entry as an invitation to re-ignite the infamous "fish-related pun contest>

Don't get me started. Losing a fish contest to a guy named Crawdaddy is irony squared. Keep it up and I will spring my collection of fish eagle puns.

BTW - Did anybody notice the Adams-Jumabayev French I posted? It shows what will happen to Crawdaddy should he attempt a return performance.

<Tim> I also neaglected this game- Adams vs R Jumabayev, 2019 . Interestingly, it was played in Ostereich, eggsactly in the center of MittleEuropa, if I recall my ornithology.

I gannet underestimate the originality of <Jumabyev's> moves in this combat. He really left no tern unstoned in his search for the best reply to each of <Adam's> sallies.

This game would be worthy of inclusion in <Kasparov's> "Migration Predecessors." Sadly, neither player preceded <Kasparov>, so they had to be left out of that famous beak.

<Ohio> The stork truth is that both you and <Tim> are destined to cock this up. Maybe you'll score in the first and second rounds, but by the bird round you'll find your true place in the pecking order.

Hen we'll see who gets that last laugh.
