Robert James Fischer
<I've got it! A bio that takes context and history into account!
ROBERT JAMES Lowell Impact Fischer, born March 9, 1943, is considered by many to be among the greatest few chess players of all time. Many others think he's the very best, and still a few others believe he transcends space and time.Fischer first gained international notice when, at the age of just 13, he defeated Donald Byrne with a queen sacrifice which wins in all variations, including those beginning with 1 Nf3 d5 2 c4 and 1 g3 e5. Fischer shocked the chess world by winning the 1962 Stockholm Interzonal by a stunning 2 & 1/2 point margin. Despite this unprecedented show of strength - who is Alexander Kotov, anyway? - Fischer, thanks to completely true and irrefutable Soviet chicanery, failed to qualify for the 1963 World Championship. Although Fischer continued to clash with the utter wrongheadedness of the governing body of international chess (USSR), he nevertheless continued to perform unprecedented feats at the chessboard: in 1964, Fischer defeated the entire field at the USA Chess Championships 11-0 despite the additional handicap of taking his opponents on in a simul; in 1970, Fischer crushed a strong field in a blitz tournament and, shortly thereafter, recited every move of every blitz game ever played. But 1971 and 72 were Fischer's purple patch: facing the entire weight of the Soviet Chess Machine, Fischer plowed through the Candidates matches, defeating along the way Mark Taimanov, Tigran Petrosian, Yuri Averbakh, Leonid Stein, Paul Keres, Efim Geller, Mikhail Tal, Isaac Boleslavsky, Vladimir Tukmakov, Vassily Smyslov, David Bronstein, Alexander Tolush, Igor Bondarevsky, Viktor Korchnoi, Ratmir Kholmov, Col. Nikolai Baturinski, and Sputnik. Fischer finished off the Soviet "murderer's row" by defeating reigning World Champion Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Championship match. Fischer, due to a <mandatory 20-year rematch rule>, faced Spassky again in 1992 and defended his title. After travelling the world in his later years, Fischer died in 2008, ending his 36-year reign as World Champion. He is credited today with revitalizing Bf1-c4 in the Open Sicilian, reviving the Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation, and inventing the move 1. e4. > |

Jul-20-12 | | shivasuri4: <Phony Benoni: You ever get the feeling that every time Black wins in the Traxler it's exactly the same game? Black sacrifices everything, including some pieces he gets on credit from the next game. Sometimes White takes everything, in which case he gets mated. Sometimes White declines everything, in which case he still gets mated. In fact, the only time the Traxler doesn't win is when you try it yourself.> In today's GOTD kibitzing. |
