<Format>:

[player]-[player] [result] [# of MOVES]

==4 Different Scoring Methods==

Standard Moves Ranker (1st place-Over[3pts], 1st place-Under [7pts], Exact [10pts])

Bonus Ranker (3rd place-Over[1pts],2nd place-Over[2pts],3rd place-Under [5pts], 2nd place-Under [6pts]

Standard Moves/Bonus Ranker [Add all to together]

1st place Ranker [how many 1st place you have in Standard Moves Ranker]

For example:

<Note: Participants 3, 4, and 5 are predicated on nobody scoring an exact as Participant 2 did. If someone hits an exact, the closest score under and over will score the points for second place.>

Actual Game: [player]-[player] 0-1 45

Participant 1: [player]-[player] 1/2 45
Participant 2: [player]-[player] 0-1 45
Participant 3: [player]-[player] 0-1 44
Participant 4: [player]-[player] 0-1 43
Participant 5: [player]-[player] 0-1 46

Participant 1: No points even though 45 is correct. Results must be correct. If Result is wrong and moves # is correct...you get no points whatsoever

Participant 2: 10 pts rewarded for correct Result/moves #

Participant 3: 7 pts rewarded for closest under (1st-Under) to 45 moves

Participant 4: 6 pts rewarded for the 2nd closest under (2nd-Under) to 45 moves.

Participant 5: 3 pts rewarded closest OVER(1st-OVER) to 45 moves.

Again, the description of Participant 3, 4, and 5 are based on there being no exact prediction as made by Participant 2.

<IF> there is an exact or an under closest, the highest scoring over participant will be 2nd over. The second closest over will be 3rd over. The <ONLY> time there will be a first over is if there is no exact or under winner.

WannaBe: <OhioChessFan> Honestly, and also seriously, I do not understand why you don't play.

You've shown more understanding of the game than some of the yahoos I've played against on Yahoo.com.

You've shown more understanding of the positions and it's impacts on the game at hand than some of the knot-heads I've played against on GameKnot.com

You've got a better mind for the game than the Ding-bats I've faced on schemingmind.com

There are quite a few free chess playing web-sites out there, give the game a try, sign up for free and play a few games.

Why don't you? =)

Oct-12-06  Thorsson: I probably should expand on my original comment on the Rae1 line given by Tabanus.

1. I don't think there is anything <wrong> with Rae1.

2. If we move the Rook back to c1 after 1 more move though, there would clearly be a problem (unless there was a pure tactical reason).

3. One drawback is the a5 pawn. We can't play Nd4.

4. Rae1 would be better if we were threatening e5 as well as f5.

Oct-12-06  twinlark: Ohio, nanny two birds here...don't forget to update your bio...

This forum will be looking at Black's likely non-capture options like 16...Re8 and 16...Qd7.

16...Rc8 is being considered separately in User: Domdaniel 's forum.

  Domdaniel: Hi, Ohio
I know you've mentioned the 'search kibitzing' function a few times, so maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong...

Up to this, for forum purposes, I've usually worked thru the challenge pages manually without doing an actual search. But before the Nickel game, I didn't zap around the CG site much anyway - just live games and a few other odd corners. I'm still figuring out some of the shortcuts.

This time, my forum was about 16...Rc8. I've tried running searches on "16.f5 Rc8", "16...Rc8" and other variants, but without much luck. Any tips?

WannaBe: <Domdaniel> You can simply do Rc8 and get hits, the search here, is somewhat primitive, so you (may) have to do some manual eye-scan for the result.

Also, FYI, you can go to google and type in your search keyword(s), followed by 'site:name' and it will only search within that address. But google doesn't always have the latest web pages in its database.

For an example of above, go to http://www.google.com then in the box, enter: Rc8 site:www.chessgames.com

Oct-14-06  Thorsson: I'm pretty sure that Qd7 is one of Black's best replies (see main forum). And it is also the one we've done least work on. I'm thinking about whether we can play 17.h3 here.

The point of h3 is that we can play Bh6, then Qf2 without having to worry about Ng4. There is a potential tempo gain (back) in this line based around Bh6 followed by Bg5 - Black may well be forced to move his R back to f8 to cover the Nf6 in case of fxg6.

Oct-14-06  Thorsson: Funnily enough, after exf5 exf5 Qd7 appears the best reply again. And maybe not much different than on the previous move.

Tabanus: I can't wait. According to <RV>'s recent post in the main forum,

17...Re8 18.Bb6 Qd7 19.Qd2 Nd5 20.Bd4

was worthy of consideration. So now

17...Qd7 18.Qd2 Rfe8 19.Bb6 (instead of 19.Bg5) Nd5 20.Bd4, transposing,

should be equally worthy of consideration. Just a thought.

Oct-17-06  RookFile: Ok, so why should we play 18. Qd2. Just because black MIGHT play ...Re8? Any other reason? What does it do?
Oct-17-06  Mughlibuc: an anyone explain the main ideas behind 18.Qd2? Thanks.

And OhioChessFan... you have twice 16. in your move list at the top of this page.

  Tabanus: <RookFile> I just trusted <RV>'s 18...Rfe8 at 26-ply.
Oct-17-06  twinlark: <RookFile>

<RV>'s Rybka seems to think that 18...Re8 is Black's next move anyway, regardless of whether we play 18.Nd4, 18.Bg5 or 18.Qd2.

Without taking RV's stuff as gospel, at the very least it indicates 18.Qd2 is an important option. This could be a sleeper, as it has no obvious reason, yet it holds its own with the others.

Let's work out what its strategic value is. <Domdaniel>'s Strategic Forum is there for these sort of strategic and contextual issues.

Tabanus: 18.Qd2 Rfe8 19.Bb6 looks good. It almost threatens Nd4 when Nd5 Nxc6 bxc6 Nxd5 would leave him with a double pawn. He should therefore have to play 19...Ng4, or 19...Nd5 at once (threatening Nxb6) and now 20.Bd4. If black really has to play 20...gxf5 or f6 here...
Oct-17-06  Dionyseus: Rybka 2.1o analysis after 18.Qd2:
Analysis by Rybka 2.1o mp 32-bit:
18...Rfe8 19.Bg5 Nh5 20.Nd4 d5 21.Bxe7 Qxe7 22.g3 Qe3+ 23.Qxe3 Rxe3 24.f6 g5 25.Rad1 = (0.13) Depth: 19 00:09:26 120mN

OhioChessFan: I will pose a question about the position and see whether anyone thinks that has any bearing on 18. Qd2. If Black plays Rfe8, and then Bf8, is it important for us to keep that Bishop off h6? That is, would we want the Queen to keep her eye on h6 while our Bishop moves to b6 or d4?
Oct-17-06  twinlark: <Ohio> Your FEN diagram of the pawn structure from White's point of view shouldn't have a Black pawn on e6.
Oct-17-06

kwgurge: <OhioChessFan> Black has an extra e- pawn in your pawn structure diagram above.

Tabanus: <Dionyseus> Ok, so 19...Nh5. That "h" looks like a "d" to some people.
