♔ MY PROFILE ♔

I'd like to thank the user who gave me a year of premium services from Feb/14/2012-Feb/14/2013, the user who gave me 3 years of premium services from Dec/26/2015-Dec/26/2018, the user who gave me 2 years of premium services from Dec/31/2018-Dec/31/2020, the user who gave me 3 years of premium services from Dec/25/2020 to Dec/25/2023, the user who gave me 1 year of premium services from Dec/26/2023 to Dec/26/2024, and the user who gave me 1 year of premium services from Dec/26/2024 to Dec/26/2025. :)

??? BIOGRAPHY ???

Outside of chess, I also like to watch sports (who doesn't), and even play sports (even though I'm not great at it). Baseball is by far my favourite sport.

??? GAME COLLECTIONS ???

Penguincw's Game Collections

To view all my collections, see here: Game Collection: 0: Table of Contents.

??? CHESS PUZZLES ???

Here are some chess puzzles I composed. I'm not a very strong composer, but they should be fun to solve nevertheless. However, since my forum won't always be open, I decided to use one of my game collections for that purpose:

Game Collection: Chess Puzzles

Here's a sample:

White to move, mate in three

??? ACHIEVEMENTS ???

Here's my short list of achievements on this site (other than achievements relating to the prediction contests, which are listed further below):

966th user to open up their forum.

Became the 45th user to reach 13,000 posts (unofficial).

Only the 2nd user (honour shared with 7 other users) to win a membership from the Santa Claus draw twice.

In the ChessBookie Game, finished first in the Championship 2015 preseason with 1727 cbs, 174 cbs ahead of 2nd place. Also, in the Fall 2014 preseason, I finished in 2nd with 1418 cbs, just 40 cbs behind first at the last known update.

4th user, and 3rd overall (after <SwitchingQuylthulg> (x2), <wordfunph> and <Annie K.>) to run the ChessBookie Game.

At the 2016 Caissar Awards, I was nominated and won the "Most Helpful" award for 2015.

In Spring 2016, I became the 172nd user to qualify for the Championship Leg in the ChessBookie Game, finishing in 10th place with 4,204 cbs. (fact-checking needed)

??? PREDICTION CONTESTS ???

I like competing in the prediction contests, and so far, have won these medals (along with the rank listed):

<Golden Executive>

First user to ever win a gold medal in each of the 3 contests from the same tournament (Tata Steel 2015).

The 4th user to have won at least 3 golds in 3 different contests (after <chessmoron>, <lostemperor> and <SwitchingQuylthulg>). Members of this club are unofficially considered to be "grandmasters" of the prediction contests.

For the 7th consecutive year (2011-2017), I have won at least one gold medal in one of the contests. I am one of just 6 active users to have done so, the others being <chessmoron>, <cromat>, <lostemperor>, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <WinKing>.

??? NOTABLE POSTS ???

I've made over 13,000 posts, but not all posts are created equally. In fact, most of them don't have too much value, but here are some of my best posts:

  Penguincw: ♔ CONTINUED ♔

The one you see above, it was just some stats on how often you post on my forum, your first time, and your last time. It took me half an hour to post that single post (*sweat* *sweat*).

How I figured it out was simple, yet painful. I removed all the users from favourites list (already heart-breaking, I know!) then type it the following users. Then I tallied up all the posts you had, including your first and last, and when it was time for another user, I removed the previous and so on.

IN SUMMARY
1)Opened 3 tabs (one for posting, one for favourites list, the other for my forum, favourites mode, [ON].

2)Typed in every single user, one by one [except for the "last few" (meaning more like last half)]

3)Refreshed the forum tab.

4)Counted all your posts up, and took note of your first time, and most recent.

5)I typed it into the first tab, and then post it when I was done.

As you will notice, the first ones tend to post more often.

Now, a few last things to say.

-42 users have post on my forum, to date. So thank you all! :)

-My "forum kibitzing average" (determined by #of posts divided by # of days my forum was open) is now 1.22. :)

-Also, my forum was open for 392 days and has 480 posts (from Golden Executive's second last post on Mar-12-12). The race is on! 20 posts* or 8 days**?

-Right now, the grand average says 1.22, but the March average is 1.92. How interesting.

-I will have an individual "ceremony" for when it really reaches 500 posts.

-Next Goals***:

-25 pages (625 posts)

-30 pages (750 posts)

-40 pages (1,000 posts)

-50 pages (1,250 posts)

-60 pages (1,500 posts)

-Lastly, this for congratz for the 500th poster. Congratz! :)

*Each post must be at least 50 characters long, and it meant to be 503 posts, due to three (four) posts after that one.

*Eight days, meaning the deadline is Wednesday March 20th, 2012, 11:59PM EST (you can check out the live time here: www.chessgames.com/time.

***This is for you Switch: For instance, when I mean 25 pages, I mean 625 posts, not 601 or something like that. :)

(Random Day #2)

Previous Fact: Penguincw chessforum

Fact #4

< "The largest penguin that ever lived was almost as tall as a human". >

< "Scientists know this from studying fossil bones of penguins that lived millions of years ago. These bones gives us clues about how prehistoric penguins looked and behaved. Waimanu, for example, was a small-penguin like bird that lived around 60 million years ago." >

< "The long-extinct Waimanu had bird-like wings, rather than flippers, but probably could not fly". >

< Interesting. Some tall penguins. Can't say the same for today though. :(

Now, which penguin is taller. Males or females? >

That break I had over the summer to watch MLB was rapidly dropping for my average. If I never took a break, it would have been more like 15 a day or something. This year, I'm making an effort not to take a long break (or at least put up a few posts everyday).

ahhhh, my accounting is awful :(

  Penguincw: ♔ ANNOUNCEMENT ♔

I forgot to release the puzzle solution yesterday, but wait no more!

White to move, mate in 6.

click for larger view

The solution starts with <1.Nd4>, threatening checkmate on c6.

click for larger view

Black's only response is to play <1...Nd2+>.

click for larger view

<2.Ka1> is the only move (if 2.Ka2 Nxb3 3.Nxb3+ Ka4 and black is the only one who can win).

click for larger view

<2...Nxb3+> is the next move, capturing a pawn.

click for larger view

<3.Nxb3+>, the best reply.

click for larger view

<3...Ka4>, the only move.

<4.Ka2>, protecting the knight, and leaving black with only one reply.

<4...Ra5>, the only move.

click for larger view

<5.Nc5+>, giving up the knight.

<5...bxc5, the only move.

<6.b3# 1-0>.

What a finish! The pawn delivers checkmate, with the help of its king, and all of black's pieces cover his escape.

I found it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Ny..., at 7:53. :)

It's puzzle time again. I got a new composition and here it is.

White to move, mate in 5.

click for larger view

COMMENTS

1)I checked it with an engine twice (one time, demonstrating the mate, the other having the computer mating me).

2)I composed this myself (initially in my head).

3)I wanted white to win, since black won the last time I composed a puzzle.

4)If no one gets it on my forum by Monday (around 9:00PM) then I will post a hint.

5)Solution comes out in one week (Friday March 23rd, 2012).

6)Good luck!

Previous Fact: Penguincw chessforum

Fact #5

< "Male and female penguins usually look alike." >

< "It is very difficult to tell them apart, but the males are often taller and slightly heavier. Most penguins build nests or dig burrows where they lay their eggs, and both parents help to take care of the eggs and chicks." >

< Makes sense, I guess. It is difficult to tell them by high (you can line them up, but they just waddle all over the place). Also, we all know penguins can't fly, but why can't they fly. One of the previous facts was that the penguins' flippers were close to a human, but why can't people fly? Are they too heavy, or not strong enough?

Also, this is my 500th post on my forum, I believe. I will update my profile accordingly tomorrow. :) >

Previous Fact:
Penguincw chessforum

Fact #6

< "All birds have wings, but not all of them can fly" >

< "Wings are limbs, just like arms and legs, but they are mostly used for flying. The wings of penguins are too small and stumpy to be used for flight, but they have evolved for moving through water." >

< "Penguins evolved (gradually changed over millions of years) from flying birds into flightless birds, so their flippers look quite similar to wings." >

< Ok. So, they can't fly. :( However, they do have wings similar to those who can fly, like my avatar.

Anyone know you kind of bird my avatar is. It looks like a yellow warbler in cartoon form, but I can't be certain.

The question: They can't fly, but they have other uses. What are those? >
