??? BIOGRAPHY ???

Outside of chess, I also like to watch sports (who doesn't), and even play sports (even though I'm not great at it). Baseball is by far my favourite sport.

??? GAME COLLECTIONS ???

Penguincw's Game Collections

To view all my collections, see here: Game Collection: 0: Table of Contents.

??? CHESS PUZZLES ???

Here are some chess puzzles I composed. I'm not a very strong composer, but they should be fun to solve nevertheless. However, since my forum won't always be open, I decided to use one of my game collections for that purpose:

Game Collection: Chess Puzzles

Here's a sample:

White to move, mate in three

??? ACHIEVEMENTS ???

Here's my short list of achievements on this site (other than achievements relating to the prediction contests, which are listed further below):

966th user to open up their forum.

Became the 45th user to reach 13,000 posts (unofficial).

Only the 2nd user (honour shared with 7 other users) to win a membership from the Santa Claus draw twice.

In the ChessBookie Game, finished first in the Championship 2015 preseason with 1727 cbs, 174 cbs ahead of 2nd place. Also, in the Fall 2014 preseason, I finished in 2nd with 1418 cbs, just 40 cbs behind first at the last known update.

4th user, and 3rd overall (after <SwitchingQuylthulg> (x2), <wordfunph> and <Annie K.>) to run the ChessBookie Game.

At the 2016 Caissar Awards, I was nominated and won the "Most Helpful" award for 2015.

In Spring 2016, I became the 172nd user to qualify for the Championship Leg in the ChessBookie Game, finishing in 10th place with 4,204 cbs. (fact-checking needed)

??? PREDICTION CONTESTS ???

I like competing in the prediction contests, and so far, have won these medals (along with the rank listed):

<Golden Executive>

Other Notable Achievements:

Only user to ever win a quadruple crown (London Chess Classic 2011) in the Moves Prediction Contest (or any contest for that matter).

Only user to ever win a Betting title crown in the Games Prediction Contest, and defend it the very next year, same tournament (Tata Steel 2014 & 2015).

First user to ever win a gold medal in each of the 3 contests from the same tournament (Tata Steel 2015).

The 4th user to have won at least 3 golds in 3 different contests (after <chessmoron>, <lostemperor> and <SwitchingQuylthulg>). Members of this club are unofficially considered to be "grandmasters" of the prediction contests.

For the 7th consecutive year (2011-2017), I have won at least one gold medal in one of the contests. I am one of just 6 active users to have done so, the others being <chessmoron>, <cromat>, <lostemperor>, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <WinKing>.

??? NOTABLE POSTS ???

I've made over 13,000 posts, but not all posts are created equally. In fact, most of them don't have too much value, but here are some of my best posts:

Probably my most "viral" post to date (introducing the now defunct Chessgames Playing Zone The Kibitzer's Café

Probably the first <on the internet> to notice the Original Six sweep the Tampa Bay Lightning were going through during the Stanley Cup playoffs, 2015: Mating Net chessforum.

Mar-25-16  Karposian: Hi, <Penguincw>. I saw that you earned 117 cbs today, so I wanted to offer my congratulations.

That's almost half the amount you have gained in the leg so far, so you must be pleased. You're in top 50 right now, and since there are 300+ contestants now, it's actually pretty good. You're less than 900 cbs from breaking into the top ten of the non-qualifiers.

So, even if you haven't won much this leg, you've still done well in the overall rankings. Still, I bet you are not satisfied with your results in this leg. You played much better in the fall leg, where you for a long time were in contention for a qualifying spot.

Mar-29-16  Karposian: Hi, <penguincw>. The Candidates Prediction contests have ended, and in our internal rivalry, I won both the TPC and GPC 3-0 (although the TPC was in fact more of a tie, because we both did miserably, and I was just a hair's breadth above you in the standings). But in the MPC you won convincingly 3-0=1.

Regarding the MPC, I'm bitterly disappointed with the results there. I will try to adjust my prediction system somewhat. In general, the games lasted longer than I had expected. I got most of the results right, hence my bronze medal in the GPC, but I had most games at 30-35 moves, while many games lasted 45+. But I will make the necessary adjustments in time for Norway, so I can beat you in the MPC as well :)

Well, unfortunately, the penguins living in Antarctica don't get to celebrate. :( That's because the winter is settling it. Everyone has already found a mating partner, and me and my male bros right now are trying to keep the egg warm while the wives are out at sea, looking for food.

However, penguins from other places in the world are definitely celebrating. I heard those living in the Galapagos Islands get the day off (some are spending it on the resorts).

Oh yeah, the infamous Galapagos penguin parties. It's like CancĂșn during Spring Break. Or so I've heard.

Yup, my 2 favourite teams in MLB facing off. Not sure who to cheer for honestly. Jays have won 3 in a row by nearly sweeping their ALDS opponent last season. Dodgers in a tie race with pretty much every team in that division, for the division.

I believe you mentioned the Dodgers are your favourite team. Don't know your opinion of the Jays, but let's see who wins!

Penguincw: Wow, that was a close one. Dodgers strand bases loaded, Jays win 4 straight to improve to 16-15 on the season. First time since Apr/19 (8-7) they're above 500. Meanwhile, Dodgers fall below 500, and fall behind in the division. Hoping the Rockies can take care of business.

Kershaw pitching tomorrow, against R.A. Dickey. Kershaw won the Cy Young in 2011, 2013 and 2014, Dickey 2012.

Penguincw: 4-2 now, but Kershaw is already at over 100 pitches, so is probably done for the day.

However, Toronto sports fans are actually focused on Game 3 of the NBA playoffs between the Heat and Raptors.

WannaBe: In hockey news, I'm very interested in the PIT/WAS game tonight, will Caps defend home ice, or will they flame out and become yet another great regular season team that did not win the cup.

WannaBe: Alright!! Dodgers got one in Toronto, rubber game tomorrow.
May-07-16
Premium Chessgames Member
Penguincw: And Jays lose 6-2. Kershaw improves to 4-1, Dickey 1-4. However, Dickey has been the only guy in the rotation really struggling, so watch out tomorrow! Don't know about Stripling. After that, Jays go to San Francisco.

BTW: Who's the Giants fan on this site? I'm Blue Jays (mainly), you're Dodgers, <PB> is Tigers, what about the others? (like <JB>)

Hockey, the Blues already won, so I'm good for today. Hoping they can make it all the way to the finals and win the cup too. They're the oldest active team to not have won the Cup, last visiting the finals in 1970. Of course, one team has a longer streak: the Leafs.

Looks like USA defeats Belarus 6-3. Team USA is probably my 2nd favourite hockey nation. It's a really tough group they're in, as France and Germany cannot get relegated. Hungary (or maybe Belarus) looking like the country most likely to get relegated. Any other country, I'd be shocked.

Can't wait to wake up at 5am tomorrow to see Canada face the Hungarians!

Penguincw: Ha, Blue Jays up 1-0 early. It's raining here in Toronto, but at least the roof is closed.

Canada defeats Hungary 7-1, IIHF.

In other news, JV is out vs. Miami (basketball). The Heat have lost Bosh. Toronto should be able to go 2-2 in the remaining games, but there'll need a healthy squad to get pass the healthy Cavs.
