??? BIOGRAPHY ???

Outside of chess, I also like to watch sports (who doesn't), and even play sports (even though I'm not great at it). Baseball is by far my favourite sport.

??? GAME COLLECTIONS ???

Penguincw's Game Collections

To view all my collections, see here: Game Collection: 0: Table of Contents.

??? CHESS PUZZLES ???

Here are some chess puzzles I composed. I'm not a very strong composer, but they should be fun to solve nevertheless. However, since my forum won't always be open, I decided to use one of my game collections for that purpose:

Game Collection: Chess Puzzles

Here's a sample:

??? ACHIEVEMENTS ???

Here's my short list of achievements on this site (other than achievements relating to the prediction contests, which are listed further below):

966th user to open up their forum.

Became the 45th user to reach 13,000 posts (unofficial).

Only the 2nd user (honour shared with 7 other users) to win a membership from the Santa Claus draw twice.

In the ChessBookie Game, finished first in the Championship 2015 preseason with 1727 cbs, 174 cbs ahead of 2nd place. Also, in the Fall 2014 preseason, I finished in 2nd with 1418 cbs, just 40 cbs behind first at the last known update.

4th user, and 3rd overall (after <SwitchingQuylthulg> (x2), <wordfunph> and <Annie K.>) to run the ChessBookie Game.

At the 2016 Caissar Awards, I was nominated and won the "Most Helpful" award for 2015.

In Spring 2016, I became the 172nd user to qualify for the Championship Leg in the ChessBookie Game, finishing in 10th place with 4,204 cbs. (fact-checking needed)

??? PREDICTION CONTESTS ???

Penguincw: Damn it! There goes Estrada's no-hitter (5 innings), as Trayce Thompson, #9 guy, leads off with a double. Interesting matchup just happened at Wrigley Field; Arrieta vs. Harper. Harper walked on 4 pitches.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Penguincw: Looks like USA defeats Belarus 6-3. Team USA is probably my 2nd favourite hockey nation. It's a really tough group they're in, as France and Germany cannot get relegated. Hungary (or maybe Belarus) looking like the country most likely to get relegated. Any other country, I'd be shocked.>

Finland - USA today. Finland should be the favorites, but it won't be easy.

I'm cautiously optimistic about our team this year; though maybe that's just because the junior and U18 world championships gave me a rare opportunity to watch Finland actually win tournaments. We probably don't have the best team, but we do have a good team, and we've started well. If we lose to USA now, though, that's a bad sign... though it would take some of the pressure off.

I would be half-hoping we at least lose to Canada - we never ever win all our games, so we should get a loss in before the playoffs - except that we'll probably get a much easier quarterfinal if we win the group.

Good point you make there. Sometimes it's good to lose a game here and there, so at least you've experienced a loss, and can grow stronger as a result.

Gotta love Jays' and Raptors' fans. Got a whole nation supporting their one team, and so they'll also have tons of support on the road.

---

Team Canada unsurprisingly won, but the Blues and Raptors just lost. :(

Wow, you mentioned a no-no in progress, and look what happened. I thought you were on my side!

SwitchingQuylthulg: We beat USA 3-2... but that game was still a bad sign for us, and a good sign for the Americans. Although we won despite USA getting some help from the refs (why do referees always side with USA, and only USA, when they play against us?), I can't really say we were the better team; it was a game between two evenly matched teams that we just happened to win, and USA will only get stronger from here as their team gels together.

Since Canada seems to have a stronger team than USA, I don't like our chances in that game at all. We will very likely place second in the group... which could mean facing Sweden in the quarterfinals. I have a very uneasy feeling about that, even if the Swedes haven't looked good so far.

Penguincw: Meh, good effort to come back and force extras. Jays now head to Texas. They have not lost a series to Texas since 2012 (including postseason), and are 10-2 in their last 12 games in Arlington (including postseason).

Nice to see Blues have comfortable 5-0 lead. Raptors also lead by about 10, but not comfortable yet.

Penguincw: Ooh, Blue Jays attempt to rally, but lose in extras. Meanwhile, the Marlies lose, as the Albany Devils force a Game 7.

At the Rangers' game, there was this incident of a fan, with a dog. The owner put a piece of food on the dog's nose, and the dog just ate it without touching it. And the owner mentioned that the dog had more talent than Bautista. :P

Penguincw: Ouch, Happ gives up 8 ER in the loss. I believe I read before the game that he had the 2nd lowest ERA in MLB since Aug/14/2015, and also the 2nd longest active streak of allowing no more than 3 ER/outing (something along those lines). I wonder who is first (could it be the reigning NL Cy Young winner).

Happ entered the game 5-0. Tomorrow, another pitcher with no losses gets the start: Stroman (4-0).

  SwitchingQuylthulg: Canada-Finland 0-4. Insert evil laugh :)

A Russia-Canada final is still on; the Russians have been really good after a bad start, and will unfortunately probably beat us in the semi-finals. Right now, they look like the most likely champions.

Canada will need better goalkeeping to win; goalkeeping made all the difference in today's game.

Penguincw: Damn, this loss sucks. Canada (entered #1 on the IIHF rankings) now has to face #3 Sweden in the QF, while Finland (#4) faces #15 Denmark. However, it's all one game playoffs, so anything can happen.

< A Russia-Canada final is still on... >

Not to mention a Canada-Finland final and USA-Finland final (and USA-Russia final).

Props to #13 Germany for making it. I honestly thought that Switzerland (#7) would make it. Germany hasn't made it to the knockout stage since 2011 (under a different format). Also in that year, Finland took the championship, and Canada lost to Russia in R1.

< Canada will need better goalkeeping to win; goalkeeping made all the difference in today's game. >

Yes. They currently have Calvin Pickard and Cam Talbot on the roster. 2 good goalies, but not the best. However, I'm not really sure I should criticize Cam Talbot, because I know someone who says that Talbot is her cousin.

And of course, Canada doesn't have all their best players in general (ex. Crosby). However, they pretty much never have had due to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but that was the case last year, and they still won. This year, the Sharks just got eliminated, so maybe Niemi will join you guys).

May-17-16
Premium Chessgames Member
SwitchingQuylthulg: We don't need more goalies. We don't have a goalie problem :)

I suspect Canada will keep using Talbot as the #1 goalie; but if I were in charge of the Canadian team, I'd switch to Pickard. Talbot was less than convincing today, and while he's certainly capable of playing much better than that, I wouldn't count on him suddenly finding his best form.

Penguincw: < We don't need more goalies. We don't have a goalie problem :) >

Technically Canada doesn't have a goalie problem either. Still 2nd fewest goals allowed in the tournament (after Finland). GAA of 1.14 (0.67 entering game today) looks good to me! One game doesn't worry me. :)

---

BTW: Let's hold a friendly competition; predict the result of the IIHF knockout games. Gonna keep the rules as simple as possible. You get 1 point for every game you get right, for a max. of 8 points (4 QF, 2 SF, 1 F and 1 3rd place game). Does not matter if you correctly predict the team they beat.

Closes Thu/May/21/2016, 16:00 Moscow/ Finland time or 9:00 Toronto time or 6:00 Pacific time. Hopefully <WannaBe> and maybe others join.

Post your predictions here, below this post, anytime from now to the above mentioned time. (will come back later)

And yes, it's supposed to be Thu/May/19/2016 (not sure what I was thinking about when I wrote the 21st). Hopefully the times are correct too (just to be safe, I sent it 15 minutes earlier than what I perceive the start time is).

Penguincw: Another pitcher with a perfect record goes down, as Jays lose 12-2. Raptors lose too, but I'm not too worried, as they pretty much never win Game 1.

However, Kershaw beating the Angels, so that's good news for me! Kershaw vs. Weaver, imagine if this matchup took place in 2011 or 2012.

I see suspensions handed out. I'd say, at least for the Blue Jays' suspensions, it's fair (I guess). Bautista one game for the rough slide, Gibbons 3 games for being on the field despite ejected, and Chavez 3 games for instigating a fight which had died down. Tim Leiper, sure (whatever he did).

As for the Rangers' suspensions, I would like to see Matt Bush suspended though, because he was the one that started everything that day. Maybe also suspended Jeff Banister and one of the coaches. Odor 8 games, I would like to see it longer. Andrus, good enough.
