| | Penguincw: In Round 1, you and me both got Canada, Finland and Russia correct. The tiebreaker was the Czechs vs. the Americans, and I got it right, so I take the 4-3 lead. At this point, it's coming down to Finland vs. Russia. If Finland wins, I win. If Russia wins, it'll be a tie, heading into the final 2 games. One more update, which will be after the tournament is all done. |

| | Penguincw: Looks like someone needs better goaltending. Canada 1, Finland 0. Insert evil laugh. :) So nice to avenge the loss earlier in the tournament (and also from the 2016 IIHF U20). Still, props to Finland, as they only allowed 8 goals the entire tournament, while Canada surrenders 11. Hopefully Finland will stay for the playing of "O'Canada". ;) Finland does rise up to #3 in the rankings, USA up to #4, Sweden down to #5. As for the actual contest,

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: We had good enough goaltending... it's just that we were outplayed in every other respect ;-) In the group stage game, Canada played at a super-high energy level early on and dominated play, but didn't score any goals; and as the game went on, they put less and less pressure on us. This time Canada did get an early goal in; and while they still couldn't quite maintain the same energy level through the whole game, they didn't exactly run out of gas either. We had our opportunities and could have won with a bit of luck, but Canada were in control most of the time and deserved the win. Like I said, Finland never wins every game in any tournament... I wish I hadn't been right. We wasted a perfectly good opportunity to lose to you in the group stage :( Next up: World Cup! No McDavid for Canada there :) |

| | Penguincw: Looking forward to the World Cup. Every team here looks strong, so every game will count (pretty much every game is a coin flip, more or less). And yes, McDavid and many of the youngsters will not be playing for Team Canada, but this tournament is taking place prior to the start of the NHL season, so Canada will be at full strength. Meanwhile, McDavid will be on Team North America. I wonder who Finland faces first. :) Canada will face the Czechs first. |

| | SwitchingQuylthulg: What I like about this Finnish team is that we have a lot of talented young players right now - the cores of the 2014 and 2016 World Junior Championship winning teams, to begin with. The best part is that those complement each other nicely; the 2016 team was based on good forwards, while the 2014 team had good defencemen and a good goalie. Patrik Laine, aged all of 18, was named tournament MVP here; a questionable decision maybe, but the only players ahead of him in scoring were Russians, and not making the final weighed against them. (He was <not> MVP at the World Junior Championships; that was Jesse Puljujärvi, who missed this tournament with injuries.) |

| | SwitchingQuylthulg: The complete Finnish roster (http://yle.fi/urheilu/3-8911794) for the World Cup has been named now, with 19 NHL players, 2 KHL players and 2 Finnish League players (and including 10 players from the World Championships team). Laine and another 2016 World Junior Champion, Sebastian Aho, made the final cut. I'm a bit surprised that Aho was selected; he's a very talented player, but doesn't feel like a good fit for this team. I'd have expected at least one line with some forwards of the defensive, penalty-killing type; and Aho doesn't really fit that bill. At the same time, he's not going to play on the first or second line. My guess would be that the plan is to use him on a power play unit and hope he can cope on even strength. More generally, unusually for Finland, it seems the whole team's full of offensive forwards. I'm a bit worried about how that will work, especially given that our defence doesn't feel completely safe; our defencemen have a lot of talent but not much experience in tournaments like this. I suspect Komarov (of the Maple Leafs), who was used as an offensive forward at the World Championships, will take a more defensive role at the World Cup. |

| | Penguincw: Obviously, there will always be some notable omissions from the rosters, but I'm surprised Phil Kessel (a former Leaf) didn't make the cut for Team USA. Of course, I don't blame them. All Kessel has done for Team USA was lead the 2014 Olympics tournament in points scored (he also only had 1 hat trick). In the playoffs, he's only first on the Pens in goals and points. His ex-teammate, James van Riemsdyk took his place instead. On Team Canada, neither Kris Letang, P.K. Subban or Corey Perry (Team Canada captain) made it, all huge surprises. Other notable players not making the cut are Jaromir Jagr (but he said he retired from international play), Ilya Kovalchuk and Gustav Nyquist. |

The Russians have a quite young team overall. They have two really experienced players (Datsyuk and Markov), but Ovechkin (born Sep '85) is the third-oldest player on their squad. In terms of individual skill, Russia is ridiculously strong, even without Kovalchuk; probably the only team to compare to Canada in that respect. But the problem with Russia, as it always has been since the Soviet system broke apart, will be to get those ridiculously talented individuals to play together and make a team. I'm not sold on Ovechkin in that respect; his appearances on Russian national teams have always been hit-and-miss, with some beautiful successes and some complete failures. The latest World Championships definitely count as a miss; he was a highly visible player, got plenty of ice time, took a load of shots and didn't really get anything done. The chemistry between him and his linemates didn't work at any point. I'm purely guessing here, but this would be my take on Kovalchuk. He's good enough to be on the team; but he's not an easy player to manage. While he's been more consistent on the national team than Ovechkin, Russian coaches have still had problems integrating him into their teams because he's too temperamental and his ego is too big. The same logic could apply to Radulov, who's basically a younger copy of Kovalchuk; they both belong on that team skill-wise, but the coaches wanted someone they could keep in line. In any case, after the World Championships it's hardly surprising that Shipachyov and Dadonov would be two of the forwards added. |

| | Penguincw: Oh my, what a game. Jays led 3-0 early, but blew it, trailed 8-4 with just 6 outs to go, and came back with 6 runs, winning 10-9. Jays have now won 7 of 9, just 4 games back of the Red Sox for the division, 2.5 back of Texas for the wild card. Tomorrow, the 2012 Cy Young winners face off again - David Price vs. R.A. Dickey. This will be Price's first game pitching at Rogers Centre since leaving the team. |

I almost missed it, as in the last month, I lost about 150 cbs, and fell from 2nd to 10th, but still made it in the end. :) Still, at 4204 cbs, that's probably the 4th lowest 10th place finish ever. The 12th place finisher was <Sneaky> at 3725 cbs, probably the 3rd lowest qualifying amount ever. ---
