| Jan-22-12 | | Jim Bartle: Just as bad was the drop in the end zone a couple of plays earlier. Evans (I think) caught it, then the DB slapped it out of his hands, which shouldn't happen. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I have to fault Harbaugh for not calling timeout before the kick. There was no reason at all to make him rush up to the line of scrimmage like that. |
| Jan-22-12 | | Shams: What a brutal way to end. I feel like we ("America") deserved overtime there. Or, failing that, a Patriots loss. |
Jan-22-12
 | | chancho: I'm glad the Pats won, (being formerly from Massachusetts) but that defense is downright awful.
Some good plays though... |
Jan-22-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, it was almost in the teens. |
Jan-22-12
 | | OhioChessFan: Pam Oliver: "Tell us how it feels". Is there some rule that says all women sportscasters must ask that question or some variant? |
Jan-22-12
 | | WannaBe: Just got back from the watering hole, watching the Giants-49ers game. I don't care if the score was 'low', but man, the hits. How many time was Eli hit during the game? Great game, defence wins championships. I am not old enough to say "This game was better than 49ers-NYG in 1997" or "49ers vs Cowboys in 19xx". But I will say this, I saw the the whole game, and man, it was brutal, hard hits, good defence, too bad the 'knee' turnover and the OT punt turnover was a factor in the game. But, that is part of the game. |
Jan-22-12
 | | Phony Benoni: That wasn't modern football at all, unless it turns out that the Giants' punter was greasing the toes on his kicking shoe. |
| Jan-22-12 | | Jim Bartle: 49ers defense was really, really strong, I can hardly think of any missed tackles. And the Giants couldn't run against them at all. Too bad that punt returner blew it twice, and the refs blew the whistle too quickly on that Giants fumble near the end. On the other hand, at the end of the first half it felt as if the Giants had totally outplayed the Niners and they were lucky to be behind by just three. But now the 49ers won't spoil their perfect 5-0 Super Bowl record, as I really doubt they could have handled New England. |
Jan-22-12
 | | WannaBe: NYG-NE, Super Bowl, I wouldn't really call it a 'rematch' per se. Sure, same coach, QB, but, really, is it really a rematch? (In the sense of boxing term...)
Don't know any of the lines yet, but I know <Phony Benoni> won the daily double with the 2 unders. |
Jan-23-12
 | | Phony Benoni: New England will undoubtedly be favored, but I'll take the points and won't be at all surprised if the Giants win. And this looks like an Over match-up if ever I saw one. |
| Jan-23-12 | | Shams: Super Bowl odds: Patriots <-3.5> over Giants, O/U <55>. I like the Giants with the points. |
Jan-23-12
 | | WannaBe: 55?!?! 55?!?! Give me the under. I'll bet <technical draw>'s money! $20.00 |
Jan-23-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Over stands. This has the makings of a couble-30 game. The Giants can score points. |
| Jan-23-12 | | Jim Bartle: "The Giants can score points."
They did against Green Bay, obviously, but not against SF. They scored 10 points on two real drives in the first half, but their only scores in the second half and overtime were after fumbles gave them the ball around the 20 or 25 yard line. Otherwise they didn't move the ball much. |
| Jan-23-12 | | Shams: <Jim Bartle> This is true, but the Niners defense is obviously worlds better than that of New England. |
| Jan-23-12 | | King Death: <OhioChessFan: Pam Oliver: "Tell us how it feels". Is there some rule that says all women sportscasters must ask that question or some variant?> There should be a rule barring that question. |
| Jan-23-12 | | King Death: < Jim Bartle: Just as bad was the drop in the end zone a couple of plays earlier. Evans (I think) caught it, then the DB slapped it out of his hands, which shouldn't happen.> True but at least he had the guts, just like Billy Cundiff to face the music after the game when they both probably would've liked to crawl in a hole somewhere. |
| Jan-23-12 | | Jim Bartle: I didn't see any postgame comments, but it's a major part of a kicker's game to take kicks which win or lose games. They have to be willing to face the music when they fail, except of course for this Vinatieri guy, who never seems to have missed in the clutch. Sort of like closers in baseball. I guess the Giants moved the ball in the second half than I claimed above, mostly via passing, but they still didn't score off any drives longer than 25 yards. |
| Jan-23-12 | | King Death: Here's an excerpt from an article online. You all do the math because I guess I'm not the only one trying to figure Rice's "logic": <Baltimore's Ray Rice said Flacco "showed that he's a top-five quarterback in this league," but I'd like to know how he gets to that figure. You have Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger, and that takes care of five right there. All have Super Bowl rings. All were Super Bowl MVPs. And I haven't even gotten around to Eli -- another Super Bowl MVP. So tell me where Flacco fits in. Someone? Anyone? > I'm not as sold on Eli Manning as some (especially the New York media) seem to be but there's no doubt in my mind that I'd take him or anybody on that list over Flacco. Then there's Matthew Stafford to mention another one who can really play. |
Jan-23-12
 | | WannaBe: Maybe the reporter was actually interviewing <Jim> Rice, instead of <Ray> Rice... |
Jan-23-12
 | | Phony Benoni: <King Death> Sounds like Rice standing up for his teammate. I don't think you can yet include Flacco as a top-tier quarterback because he hasn't won anything yet and is still essentially a game manager. Most importantly, he doesn't seem to have the whole team behind him. He's not the natural leader great quarterbacks must be. I'd take Eli Manning over Flacco any day of the week, including Sunday. He's a leader who can push an underdog to victory--and don't forget that he passed for over 4900 yards this year. He doesn't always look good, but is a great clutch player both in the regular and postseason. It's maybe a little early to put Matthew Stafford up there, but he's got the ability, the leadership skills, and a team that's growing around him. We'll reassess the position after the Lions destroy the Ravens in the next Super Bowl. |
| Jan-23-12 | | hangingenprise: hum: didn't flacco throw a perfect touchdown pass to win the game and
send his team to the big dance? or
put is team in position to send the
game into overtime! |
| Jan-23-12 | | hangingenprise: <phony> the fourth year is the charm.
of course, it does help to have a megatron, and an offensive line to
get there. |
| Jan-23-12 | | hangingenprise: yeap: eli took the hits.
g-men over the pats again! |
