| Jan-23-12 | | hangingenprise: i'll always take an athlete who has "guts" and can reach down and
win the big game, but does not quite
have the greatest of talent. ie. jack morris |
|
| Jan-23-12 | | hangingenprise: and morris played for the blue jays and not the expos.
<phony> he did win a world series with the tigers and the jays? |
|
| Jan-23-12 | | hangingenprise: just look it up and the twins. pitched
10 innings and known for his clutch performances. so what the hell?!!
h.o.f you bet. |
|
| Jan-23-12 | | Jim Bartle: Morris certainly did have some clutch performances, and he had the most wins of any pitcher in the 1980s. On the other hand, his lifetime record is 254-186 and his ERA 3.90. Not Hall of Fame-type records. Plus he never had a single year with an ERA under 3.00, though pitching half his games at Tiger Stadium for years contributed to that. (In 1985, for example, has was 4.50 in Detroit and 2.50 on the road.) I say he's a borderline case, similar to Drysdale and a lot of others. |

 | | keypusher: <Jim Bartle: Atlanta did have a lot of bad luck in the World Series in the 90s (91, 96), plus losing in the NL playoffs more than they should have (Philadelphia 1993, Florida 1997, San Diego 1998).> I've read that Cox's approach and strategy was suited better to winning lots of games in the regular season than winning playoff series. I have no idea if that's true, or even what the author meant. Does anyone else? |
|
| Jan-23-12 | | Jim Bartle: I don't see how that can be possible. What can be better for winning a series than having three of the best pitchers in baseball to run out there day after day? I do remember that Billy Beane saying that his A's in the years they were winning, that they were built for the regular season rather than the playoffs. I was looking at the 1996 World Series. When's the last time we've seen pitching matchups like this for the first three games? 1. Smoltz-Pettitte
2. Maddux-Key
3. Glavine-Cone
I don't remember the game, but it must have been great to watch the pitchers in game one. I always thought Smoltz and Pettitte had two of the most beautiful motions I'd ever seen (Smoltz in his early years, before injuries), one left, one right. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: << Jan-23-12 Phony Benoni: <LMAJ> I have submitted a correction slip for Browne vs R Kneebone, 1985, 1985. It turns out that White was a local Glouchestershire player named <W A Brown> with a rating equivalent to about 2080 USCF. That means this is probably one of his best games, and I'm glad we could attribute it to the correct person.
Thanks for getting the ball rolling on this one. <<<>>> >> I got some "hate mail," for this one, (a couple of e-mails, both rpo and con); but it was pretty obvious - all along - that GM Walter Browne never played this game ... unless it was a one-shot simul game. |

With a career ERA+ of 105 and a single season high of 133 I'm not impressed, to go with that career ERA of 3.90 in a ballpark that helped him for the most part. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: And - of course - you are welcome.
Some "purists" have told me that I am wasting my time with this site, and that its got a lot of garbage games. I respond by saying that I do everything I can to improve the quality of the DB. I have submitted many games, and I try to correct games when I see obvious errors. This is not the first time I have labored to correct a game ... I could quote many other examples. I think some people interpret my efforts as ego or that I have an axe to grind. I would just like it if 99% of the games on this site are accurate. I think that any real chess lover - who truly loves the game as I do - would feel exactly the same way. In a way, when you see a bad date or extra moves or the incorrect round on a famous game, its like someone taking a brush and deciding to "touch up" a famous painting ... the idea of it should strike terror into the heart of any real art lover. (I feel the same way about a chess game!) |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: <<By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.>> I remember adjournments!
I remember one game - the director's name was Paul Kidder, no joke intended - it was played in Ft. Walton Beach some 20-30 years ago. The game went into the 3rd or 4th time control, Kidder was literally asleep on the table, snoring loudly ... I won the game that night. But the next day, I was a wreck, drawing a lower-rated player and then losing ... |

Maybe these "purists" should check that out! This site isn't perfect but there's no problem there. |

just a post season inning eating pitcher with three rings and a big game pitcher when his team had, not needed, but had to win! |

 | | Phony Benoni: Please, please, PLEASE tell me this isn't true:
http://tracking.si.com/2012/01/24/r... As you may not know, the Tigers lost DH Victor Martinez for the season due to a torn ACL he suffered during a training session. But if this is the remedy, it is a huge mistake. What are they going to do when Martinez comes back? He can't catch any more on a regular basis, and Fielder can't play any position but first base where Miguel Cabrera is entrenched. The only way it could possibly make sense would be if Cabrera, who does have experience at the position, switched back to third base. But he's worked so hard to master playing first that I don't see it. Most importantly, I think it's near 100% that Prince Fielder will not be a productive player for the next nine years. I wouldn't give him five years. Genes tell, and I remember how quickly his father dropped off. The move will undoubtedly be wildly popular among the average Tigers fan; there's still a lot of love here for Cecil. But it shrieks of desperation to me. |
|
| Jan-24-12 | | King Death: <Phony Benoni> For now the Tigers are looking to split DH and first between the two. Cabrera at third doesn't sound too hot though and Martinez was never known for what he could do behind the plate. There's a lot of scary lumber but that's a lot of DHs in the lineup. Maybe they'll put Cabrera in left or something. |
