Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: <King Death> Word around here is that Cabrera was given advance notice about the deal, and is "on board" about moving back to third base. I'll still be watching carefully to see what his attitude is like.

Of course, if he's willing and able to make the switch then this is a blockbuster. Third base has been a hole for the Tigers, and if they can fill it like this it would be great.

I'm still suspicious, but having gotten over my initial visceral reaction am back to wait-and-see mode. Fortunately, this conversation is in my Forum where I can go back in six months and erase embarrassing messages.

Phony Benoni: Noll and Bradshaw for sure. And don't forget Marv Levy and Jim Kelly.

Speaking of Jim Kelly, here's a Tebowesque performance on his part:

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> Thanks for reminding me about the 4 consecutive trips made by Buff. I completely forgot about that.

But look at the stats, the game took place on Sept. 10th, which in Buffalo means -20 degrees, (Celsium, Fehrenheit, Kelvin, don't matter. This was before global warming... So, it was cold!) Plus, that was what, Carolina's first year? Second year?

J. Kelly probably went easy on them, so they wouldn't feel bad, all those unprotected draftees that Carolina picked up. (Didn't Steve Burlein played for Carolina after Raiders released him?)

Also, look at J. Kellys incredible rushing stats, 0 yards on 0 rushing attempts, that is infinity! That is in-un-calculation-able!!!!!

I don't see Tebow doing that.

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> They give the game conditions: 53 degrees <above> zero, wind 10 mph, 61% humidity. Maybe they were suffering from heatstroke.

That was Carolina's second game, so the Bills probably didn't have a good scouting report. The Panthers were relatively good on defense that year, and actually led 6-0 at halftime. Apparently the Bills made good halftime adjustments, as they scored 28 points in the third quarter.

I note too that Carolina played in the NFC <West> that year.

1st idea, 8 innings game. Stupid idea, Jerry, why don't we just shorten it to 7 innings then, or maybe 6, how about 5? Maybe 4? In the age of fast internet and short attention span, maybe just 3 innings??

2nd idea, Double-Headers. Agreed, this past season, the Oakland A's had a scheduled DH. Unfortunately, only 3 people showed up. Everyone else was too busy watching 'Moneyball', so they can remember the good ol' days.

Idea 3, Relegation. Great idea, I can't wait for the LA Dodgers play the Toledo Mudhens in 2015. Or the Durham Bulls. I've always wanted to meet Kevin Costner.

Idea 4, No Roster Expension. Agree!! You don't see Lakers expend to 18 players, or the Boston Bruins to go 40 players on the bench. The only exception would be any team owned by Oprah, then you can expand/contract all you want.

Idea 5, Limit Mound Visits. Agreed, that Moses dude, only went up once, and look what he did. Too many visits to the Mound will only make baseball worse than NBA.

Have you seen the last 2 minutes of a NBA Final? It goes on for days, with tea and crumpet breaks, it's worse than cricket! Crimmy!

Team A: Timeout!
Team B: Oh yeah?! Timeout, too!
Team A: Time, too?! Another Timeout!!

Man, this can get ugly, English football ugly, real quick...

Jan-25-12  King Death: <WannaBe> Of course he's right, the lack of scheduled DHs is a total money grab. In the old days teams had to play them because of travel and Blue Laws. As far as September callups, most teams don't carry 40 players anyhow but it can be a big advantage.

His idea about mound visits is a good one but there's one thing he might've said: another way to speed things up would be stopping batters from calling time and stepping out after what seems to be every pitch. When I started watching ball back in the 1960s you got in there and took your whacks. Then things changed and not in a positive way.

Phony Benoni: I don't like the idea of an 8-inning game, simply because it would totally spoil the symmetry of the thing.

But perhaps more important is that it would become almost impossible to break a seasonal hitting record, since players would likely get 50-100 fewer plate appearances a year. Lifetime totals would be affected adversely as well. Over a long career, a player could conceivably miss out on a full season or two.

Jan-25-12  King Death: One thing about baseball is that from the beginning, pitchers have worked less and less and games have gotten longer. In 527 career starts, Jack Morris completed 175. http://www.baseball-reference.com/p...

Sure Morris was a workhorse and a fine pitcher but nobody today completes anywhere near a third of their starts.

Jan-25-12  Jim Bartle: If we want to speed up games, stopping batters from stepping out so often would be a good first step. Another would be limiting the number of throws to bases. How about a limit of two throws to a base per batter, and the third is a balk?
Jan-25-12  Jim Bartle: I really don't see Prince Fielder being a big-time hitter even in five years, and the Tigers have to know he's not going to be even a starter in the last couple of years of the contract.

Phony Benoni: <JB> I tend to agree with you, but there are players like David Ortiz or Jim Thomé who remain effective with slow-pitch softball bodies. And leave us not forget Smokey Burgess!

Seems like there must have been something wacky with the weather. The Carolina QBs (including Frank Reich) were 6 of 23! But this article doesn't indicate anything untoward.

Phony Benoni: <keypusher> I think it was just two good defenses dominating two out-of-sync offenses. Jim Kelly was a winner, but I don't believe he was considered an elite talent at quarterback.
Jan-25-12  Jim Bartle: I'll agree with Ortiz, but I don't see Thome in the big and overweight category. He's just big: http://www.google.com.pe/search?tbm...

I'll assume Detroit is figuring they'll be using Fielder as a DH (nice play on words) for a good part of the time of the contract.

Jan-25-12  hangingenprise: <phony> except one thing, jack morris was not above average. he was superior in the big games! or his three rings and playoff games said he was.

LIFE Master AJ: Steinitz vs Von Bardeleben, 1895

For a long time (YEARS??!?), this one had the wrong date, wrong round, and was a move short. (I think my comments are saved in the kibitzes, unless they deleted them.)

FYI - someone (guess who?) challenged me to provide one other game that I had attempted to correct.

Jan-26-12  King Death: < LIFE Master AJ:...FYI - someone (guess who?) challenged me to provide one other game that I had attempted to correct.>

Why and how would somebody challenge that? You and I have had our differences but I have no doubt that you love the game the way most of us here do.

Jan-26-12  playground player: For those who are supporting Jack Morris for the Hall of Fame, let's put a question to our esteemed host.

<Phony Benoni> As a baseball connoisseur and lifelong Tigers fan, if you had to choose between these two for the Hall of Fame--Jack Morris and Mickey Lolich--which one would get your vote? (No fair counting Lolich's movie career--baseball only!)

As I see it, everything Morris could do--and he really was a fine pitcher--Lolich could do, too, and better. Just check out his stats for 1971.

Jan-26-12
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <playground player> That's tough. Lolich has always been discounted for his rotundity; he simply did not look like an athlete. It's quite believable that he became a doughnut entrepreneur after his playing days. But he was a C.C. Sabbathia type of pitcher. Some of his stats from the early 70s are eye-popping today. Plus he had the guts to stare down Bob Gibson in the 7th game of a World Series. That's a Hall of Fame credential right there.

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Yet, for all his skill and durability, he was not the dominant pitcher that Morris could be on a more regular basis. If it was One Big Game, I'd give the ball to Morris over Lolich. And that's why I'd probably prefer him for the Hall of Fame.

Jan-26-12  King Death: Lolich isn't somebody I've given much thought to for the Hall and his career numbers aren't as good as Morris's only because his career wasn't quite as long. The career ERA+ of 105 is the same and I can't see him getting in if Morris shouldn't. It was too bad that Lolich's best year came when he no shot to win the Cy Young because of Vida Blue. The surprise in the Cy vote was that Lolich came as close as he did.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/a...

Then there's Wilbur Wood who had a much better WAR than either Blue or Lolich but pitched on a mediocre team.

Jan-26-12  Jim Bartle: More of Fielder's contract:

"Fielder would get an additional $500,000 if he's the AL MVP, $200,000 if he's second through fifth and $100,000 if he's sixth through 10th. For each MVP he wins after the first, he would get $1 million.

"He also would get $100,000 if he's an All-Star starter and $50,000 if he's a reserve, or alternatively $100,000 if he's a Baseball America or Sporting News postseason All-Star. He also would receive $100,000 for a Gold Glove, $100,000 for a Silver Slugger, $100,000 for the Hank Aaron Award, $150,000 for league championship series MVP and $200,000 for World Series MVP."

You'd think at $20 million per year he should be expected to win a lot of those honors. Why the extra cash, which is pocket change compared to his regular salary?

Jan-26-12
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Prestige. Once you get to a certain level, it's not about making a specific amount of money, but about making $1 more than the next guy.

I would say that the Gold Glove bonus is safe. But personally, I'd scrap most of the incentives and just offer an extra million or two for World Series MVP.
