Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Zach Greineke has a chance to something quite unusual: start three consecutive games in the same season!

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/e...

The Brewers don't play again until Friday, so this is a very real possiblity.

You can look up Red Faber's "triple" here:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

He started both games of a Labor Day doubleheader on September 3, lasting about six innings total, then threw a complete game against the Browns on September 4th.

WannaBe: Just shown Kruk chowing down on some KC BBQ ribs, while Brett is being interviewed, guess Kruk had to keep up his figure, 'less he sweat off some of that weight in the mid-west weather.

And yes, them ribs look really good, too.

Jul-09-12  Jim Bartle: Mitch Williams (Phillies' teammate): How would you try to hit me if we faced each other?

Kruk: I'd stand right on home plate. That way I know I won't get hit.

WannaBe: Ah, yes, Mitch (Wild Thing), served the (walk-off) homer to Carter of the BJs for their WS win.

Back then, it was just called a game-winner.

Jul-09-12  Jim Bartle: No, I think at least some were called "walk off jobs" back then, a phrase popularized by Dennis Eckersley.

Jul-10-12  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony my pal! How are they treating you? I just rotated back to the world as I was in the Middle East doing top secret work for the government.

I just checked the newspapers and I see The Cubs are a 1/2 game out of last place. I thought this Theo Epstein was a world shaker ya know like Cool Hand Luke!? We have 3 Allstars but alas I guess I'll have to wait until next year.

Your pal, Travis

Phony Benoni: Howdy, Travis! Don't know what to tell you. The Tigers have three All-Stars, they're 3 1/2 games out of first place, but more people are disappointed in their performance than the Cubs. You probably had an easier time straightening things out in the Middle East!

Hope you are well prepared for the Bears and Lions match-ups this year. Be sure to order extra Bactine and Ouchies for all those little boo-boos.

Jul-10-12  Travis Bickle: <WannaBe> Thank you for the heads up Mr Bunnyman. I wouldn't swim in Illinois water if I caught on fire from gasoline with those kin to piranhas in the water!

Jul-11-12  Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni, I think The Bears Lions 2 games this year could be very interesting! Game #1 Detroit at Chicago (8:30 PM), Sunday the 28th of Oct. a Prime Timer! Game #2 Chicago at Detroit (1:00 PM) December 30th the last game of the regular season.

P.S. With The Cheeseheads, The Bears, Lions & if Minnesota turns it around the central division will be The Black & Blue Division again!

Jul-11-12  crawfb5: Dave, I started a collection on the 1893 NY Masters tournament (held in December a couple of months after the "Impromptu"). <The Sun> published all the games, so I have been adding date and round as well as submitting missing games.

The Delmar-Halpern game from Round 7 (12/19/1893, published 12/20, page 8) has me stuck. All of the other sources I could find (e.g., http://www.365chess.com/search_resu...) end the game after Black's 48th move:

click for larger view

However, <The Sun> continues on through Black's 57th move (http://www.chessarch.com/excavation... or use LoC if you want to enlarge that section).

The moves <look> to me to be:

49. R-Kt2ch K-B4
50. K-K7 K-Kt5
51. KxR K-Kt6
52. R-B7ch P-Kt5
53. R-B8 K-Kt7
54. R-KR8 P-N6
55. R-KKt8 K-B2
56. R-N7 K-N8
57. R-B7ch P-N7
Resigns

Now something is obviously wrong, as these moves are not legal from the diagram.

Any thoughts?

Jul-12-12  crawfb5: I checked on what the NY Times had to say about that Delmar-Halpern game:

<Delmar resigned to Halpern a "king's gambit declined" after thirty-seven moves>

Well, it <was> a KGD, and the <Sun> score turned to gibberish after <forty>-seven moves, so maybe the game really did end there. Seems as good a theory as any.

perfidious: Todd Helton was put on the DL; at 38, could this be the end of the road, given that he has a hip problem? It would be unfortunate to see it end this way-he's had a fine career and carried himself with class.

If Helton never plays again, what do you all think of his chances of making Cooperstown?

Jul-14-12
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Helton will always be discounted because of his home ballpark. It was certainly a factor in his success, since his lifetime batting average is about 60 points higher at home and he's had roughly 60% of his HRs and RBIs there. Also, playing in such an out-of-way spot hurts his name recognition and notoriety.

[Now, I do have to admit that I haven't looked closely as how great the home field effect is in general, though a 60-point difference is surely unusual. Other things being equal, you'd expect teams to hit more home runs on the road since they get more at bats on the road.]

Helton's .323 lifetime average is his only outstanding number; 350 home rune isn't HOF quality. He did have two dominant years in 2000-2001 (40+ HRs, 140% RBIs, high averages), but has not quite reached those heights otherwise. A good player, even great at times, but not the sort of figure destined for the Hall of Fame.

Maybe many years from now, if they still haven't had an inductee from Colorado, he might get a Veterans' nod. But I don't see him getting close to 50% in the regular balloting, much less 75%.
