 | | WannaBe: Sitting with my good friends Vicki and Steve last night at the pub, watching the Boids and the Gnats. She said, Don't count out these Cards, at that time, Cards were down 6-0 after 2 and 1/3 inning. She was lamenting that she have to go to work today, because Nats would host games 1 and 2, so SF have to get ready for the FOX TV crew, she is trying to get Navy to do fly-overs and blah blah blah blah... Guess she will be at work today, Sunday and Monday, with long hours. Games are scheduled to start at 8PM/5PM, which means she will be at the stadium minimum 12 hours each day during game. |

 | | WannaBe: What/which is worse:
1. Having a 2 games to none lead, goes home and lose the series 3-2, when the team have not lost 3 in a row at home during the regular season. 2. Blowing a 6-0 lead in a game, at home, with your fans waving towels and going nuts. Which no other team, ever, having blowing such a big lead. Discuss. |

 | | Phony Benoni: 3. Not making it to the postseason at all. |

 | | keypusher: <playground player: <Phony Benoni> Other nicknames ending in "rod": Billy "Fly Rod" Champion (1971 Phillies); the Iditarod Sled Race; Herod Agrippa et al; "Hot Rod" Kanehl (1962 Mets); Helki the Rod (see great American literature by persons nicknamed <playground player>)> Reversing things, there's also Rod the Mod. |

 | | Phony Benoni: A great team for nicknames was the 1943 New York Yankees. Simply having a closer nicknamed "Grandma" is classic right there. But they also had a bunch of dwarfs (Snuffy, Stormy, Tuck, Ziggy, Tiny, Goober, and Baby Face), not to mention more threatening names like King-Kong, Bull, Swampy, and Butch. And that's not even counting Flash, Crow, Rollie, Spud, Bud, and Milkman Jim. And of course, they had a Lefty. Every team has a Lefty. It's required by the Constitution. But in this team's case, the guy was actually named <Marius Ugo Russo>. No nickname could top that. |

 | | WannaBe: The announcers on ESPN Radio said, Tigers did not make a roster change, but Yankees did put a pitcher on the roster and activated A-Rod. So, I guess you can make roster moves between series. |

 | | WannaBe: Wow, that's all I can say, wow. 4-4 game. |

 | | Phony Benoni: I don't see how they can trust Valverde again. This is beginning to look positively Mitch Williams-ish. |
|
| Oct-14-12 | | Shams: I don't know who Mitch Williams is, but if he's anything like Bobby Ayala, Norm Charlton or Arthur Rhodes, I agree. |
|
Oct-14-12
 | | Phony Benoni: <Shams> Mitch Williams, aka "Wild Thing", was the Phillies closer in 1993 who imploded twice in the World Series. Was never the same again. |
|
| Oct-14-12 | | Shams: <Phony Benoni> That was the famous Lenny Dykstra squad, right? "Wild Thing" to me will always be Charlie Sheen. One of the greatest scenes in sports movies. |
|
Oct-14-12
 | | WannaBe: <Shams> Look for the highlight of Philly-Toronto and Mitch Williams and Carter on YouTube. =) Tigers win! Tigers win! Yankees got to be concerned, injuries and short handed pitching with no days off. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Hate to see a fractured ankle in an older athlete. If it's not a career-ender, it's often a harbinger of inefftiveness due to lessened mobility and power. |
|
| Oct-14-12 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Regardless of how his ankle heals, Derek Jeter should retire. He has nothing left to prove in baseball, and he's a sure bet for the Hall of Fame. He was brought up to the Yankees in a hurry lo, these many years ago, to fill in for Tony Fernandez--who was supposed to be their shortstop for that year, but early in the season suffered an injury. Jeter was great from the get-go, and Fernandez was traded. |
|
| Oct-14-12 | | Jim Bartle: I guess Fernandez was injured in 1996 spring training, as he didn't play at all for the Yankees or anyone else that year. |
|
Oct-14-12
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> In principle, I agree that Jeter should retire since I doubt he can come back at the level he expects of himself. But guys like him want to walk off the field on their own terms, not be carried off. |

 | | WannaBe: Whenever I pick the Raiders to win (no pt spread in the $5 pool) they play like crap and lose. Whenever I pick the Raiders to lose, e.g. vs. Pittsburgh and today @Atlanta they play well. Arrrrrrrrgh!!!
That Indy-NYJ score surprises me... |

I'm glad the Yankees were held scoreless, otherwise that blown call would have made a big difference. |
