Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: I second what my dear honourable colleague <Phony Benoni> posted the other day. The NL should really adopt the DH rule and liven up the game of beeesball.

They just don't/can't score runs in the NL.

WannaBe: 52 years ago, on Oct. 13, Pittsburgh beat the Yankees on Bill Mazeroski's home run in Game 7.

Yeah, now, it's the only the league championship game 1 or 2, pending on which league, and we wonder why World Series can't be played before Christmas and why kids aren't watching it.

While the NFL are playing their games on TV in day-time and the MLB are putting their games on TV at Eight PM start on East Coast.

Go fig...

Oct-15-12  technical draw: After watching Joe Theisman break a leg on live TV I quit watching football for a few years. I may do the same with baseball after Derek Jeter's injury. I've already lost interest in the playoffs.
Oct-15-12  Jim Bartle: I didn't see the Jeter injury. Was it gruesome to see, the way the Theismann one was?
Oct-15-12  technical draw: <JB> Here's a clip. It wasn't as obvious as Theisman's injury in this video but maybe there are other's from different angles:

Phony Benoni: It wasn't gruesome at all. You wouldn't have known anything was wrong except for the look on Jeter's face. It didn't look serious until he was carried off the field, and you saw the foot dangling.

Apparently, the foot has been sore and bothering him for about a month, but he played through it. You'd expect no less from Jeter.

Oct-16-12  Deus Ex Alekhina: The soap opera surrounding A-Rod and thedamnyankees continues: he was seen flirting with and getting the digits of a NY honey in the stands while thedamnyankees were losing to The Great Tigers.

Phony Benoni: We know, <Travis>, we know! It's good the Lions are getting back to doing the things they did when they were successful last year--like drawing 16 penalties.

<keypusher> Despite their success, the Tigers aren't hitting much either. I'd like to see them bust out tonight, but it's not likely against Sabbathia. Even crummy left-handers have been giving the team trouble this year.

Oct-17-12  Jim Bartle: The Yankees will probably win tonight, but the Tigers will put it away in game five. The Yankees' hitting has been anemic, though they've hit quite a few hard shots right at outfielders.

The Tigers haven't been getting the key hit very often, though it was bad luck last night when Cabrera crushed one with the bases loaded, but right at the third baseman.

Alex Rodriguez looked like he wasn't even a member of the team last night, in a sweatshirt, away from the team. Announcer Gary Thorne asked, "I wonder if there's something wrong we don't know about," and Rick Sutcliffe replied, "Not below the neck, there isn't."

Oct-17-12  playground player: <Phoney Benoni> I just heard that Eddie Yost, "The Walking Man," has died. He was one of my favorite American League players when I was a kid, especially when he was with the Tigers in 1959. It wasn't easy to beat out Ted Williams for the league lead in walks, but Eddie did it six times!

Hic jacet, and all that...

Oct-17-12  Jim Bartle: Just checked. Yost really did walk a lot. I'd thought it was sort of a myth.
Oct-17-12
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Only five players have walked at least 150 times in a season: Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams ...

...and Eddie Yost.

What really stands out is that he wasn't such a big threat at the plate. Pretty average, in fact. A lifetime .254 hitter, his best numbers were .295, 21 HRs, 65 RBIs.

But, my goodness, Ted Williams must have envied his eye.

Phony Benoni: Yankees live to fight another day, but I don't know why they postponed the game. I'm maybe ten miles from the stadium, and nothing is going on around here but a few sprinkles.

But that's Detroit. They save all the good stuff for downtown, and leave nothing for the neighborhoods.
