Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Ritson-Morry vs G T Crown, 1947

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Oct-18-12  Jim Bartle: Detroit just sent out Smiley to start the seventh inning, then took him out before throwing a pitch when the Yankees sent up a pinch hitter. I've never seen that before. I think it wouldn't have been allowed if Smiley was just entering the game, but he'd pitched to one batter in the sixth.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Right. Once you're brought in, you have to face at least one hitter.

A funny example of this would be if the visiting team has a big rally in the top of the first, and the manager decides to pinch-hit for his ace pitcher and save him for the next day. He can't do it. If you're announced as the starting pitcher, you have to face at least one batter.

Small point: the name is Smyly. The Left-Hander who Came In From the Cold.

Oct-18-12  Jim Bartle: Question for you, PB: Who are Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Eulogio de la Cruz, Mike Rabelo, Burke Badenhop and Dallas Trahern?
Oct-18-12  hangingenprise: phony: good luck in the world series!
if it is wannabe's team, go tigers,
if it is the cardinals, may the best
team win.

WannaBe: <hangingenprise> My Dodgers didn't come close to smelling the post-season. I think Giants are <jim bartle>'s team...

Regardless of St.L/SF, me are going to root for the ol' coot Jimbo Leyland. I'm gonna smoke a Marlboro Light, just for him. :-)

2-0 bottom of the foist in'g.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Probably all players the Tigers have traded away in the last few years.

I definitely recognize Maybin and Miller as Can't Miss minor league prospects for the Tigers who proved to be Can Miss major leaguers elsewere. de la Cruz and Badenhop also ring a bell in that regard, but I don't know what heppened to them afterward.

I don't recall Dallas Trahern, and I think they actually got Rabelo from somebody else before dumping him. But the pattern is clear, and now I'll go investigaing.

WannaBe: Game 1. Verlander CG, 134 pitches Tigers win 3-1

Game 2. Verlander CG, 145, Tigers win 5-2

Game 3. Verlander CG, 165, Tigers win 6-4

Game 4. Verlander CG, 239, Tigers wins a squeaker, 10-8.

Oct-18-12  Jim Bartle: I wonder whether Alex Rodriguez will ever play for the Yankees again.

Phony Benoni: It's hard to imagine Rodriguez will come back. He continues to maintain he wants too, and will not waive his no-trade clause.

But he's now a .275 hitter with only moderate power, and going downhill. I wouldn't be shocked to see an outright release if they can't get a deal done.

Oct-19-12  hangingenprise: wannabe; yea, i know you are a dodger fan, but now since ur a nor cal don't wear dodger blue to candlestick park, o wait, that was back in the day, wherever they play now.
Oct-19-12  playground player: There is no truth to the rumor that the Yankees are going to trade Alex Rodriguez for Mike Krnsich.
