Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: I'm not happy with the situation, but can't say I'm surprised. The Tigers have a reputation as a high-scoring offensive machine, but they have stretches where they can barely get a hit, and production with runners in scoring position is nonexistent.

Even worse, they showed this tendency against some truly dreadful pitchers, especially left-handers. It got to the point that teams would bring up left-handers from AA to start a game against the Tigers.

Of course, there were plenty of good days that more than counter-balanced the bad. But this team has basically relied on out-pitching the other side.

Oct-28-12  Jim Bartle: Just from looking and remembering other years, the Giants' pitching really hasn't looked that great, certainly not to hold the Tigers to 3 runs in three games, and two of those when it didn't matter. Detroit just isn't hitting, and when they do hit the ball hard it's right at someone, as has happened at least twice with Fielder.

Pretty great catch by Blanco on that foul ball last night.

WannaBe: You have to give SF's GM a lot of credit, (and I'd be the first one to 'hate to admit it'.) Mid-season trade for H. Pence and M. Scudero was tremendous for SF.

(Whereas Dodgers got a 'blockbuster' trade from BoSox that did nothing.)

The 50-games suspension to Cabrera did not bother/hurt the team, by moving A. Pagan from 5th to lead-off gave the team extra boost (Good decision by B. Bochy)

  keypusher: Congrats, Jim! Congrats, Giants!
Oct-29-12  Jim Bartle: No congrats owed to me. I can't really figure how they won so easily. The pitching didn't look that good, Detroit was just in a slump and had bad luck. Their 3-4-5 hitters struck out against a middle reliever last night--how does that happen? And of course Cabrera struck out to end the game, letting a perfect strike go by. Fielder hardly had any hits, but he must have crushed five balls--right at Giants fielders.

It's strange feeling, though. No championships in 50 years in SF, despite many great players and some very good teams (especially in the mid-60s). Now they've won twice in three years, with teams that don't seem half as good. I wonder what I'm missing.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> The Fox commentators keeps on saying 'Firewood' everytime a bat got broken/shattered on TV for games #3 and #4.

(Not sure where you're get your TV-feed from and may have missed these 'gems' by the commentators... =)

Also, they had a graphic, of the AL teams that swept the League Championship Series (Best of 7)

1988, 1990 (Oakland) 2006, 2012 (Detroit). And we know what happened to these teams.

NL had 2 teams that swept a 7 game League Championship Series to reach the World Series: 1995 Atlanta and 2007 Colorado

So, they were debating, is it the time off? Too long a rest?!

Now, if we include the Best of 5, here are the results (* denotes WS-Champion):

AL: 1984*, 1981, 1980, 1975, 1971, 1970*, 1969

NL: 1982*, 1979*, 1976*, 1975*, 1970, 1969*

So, if you sweep a Best of 7 League Series, World Series record is 1-5, if you sweep a Best of 5 League Series, World Series record is 7-6.

(AL losing more than NL, not sure if these numbers actually mean anything, besides useless trivia.)

Oct-30-12  technical draw: Speaking of useless trivia the announcers are always talking about things in the past that have no bearing on the present game. For example: "The last time these teams met team A swept team B 4-0." But that was like in 1968 or something so it's meaningless but they keep bringing it up.
