Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Nov-06-12  Jim Bartle: I didn't like "Moneyball" much. It was well done, but the presentation of the A's as a team with no stars that won the division because the GM got good players that nobody else recognized as good is very exaggerated.

That year the A's had Hudson, Zito and Mulder in the rotation, all A's draft choices selected with the help of the scouts (who are ridiculed in the movie). Unmentioned in the movie. They had the AL MVP Miguel Tejada. His name isn't spoken, and his only appearance is making an error.

No, according to the movie the A's won because Billy Beane realized catcher Scott Hatteberg could be a good first baseman. Sure, that helped, but it was already a good team.

Nov-06-12  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Moneyball wasn't an historical film for baseball purists like George Will. It is an interesting, entertaining, sometimes humorous view of the game. Representing Billy Beane with thinking outside the box of conventional baseball wisdom to compete with Corporate Banking teams like The NY Yankees seen through the perspective of the GM. It's the best baseball movie I've seen in a long time.

P.S. The Pride of The Yankees isn't close to the truth in the majority of the film but it still gave you a look at The Yankees with a cameo with Babe Ruth himself and paid homage to Lou Gehrig.

Nov-06-12  Jim Bartle: But "Moneyball" could have been accurate just by adding a line or two, such as "We've got a great starting rotation, and a tremendous shortstop. Where are we going to find the players to put us over the top, with our tiny budget."

Beane certainly was good at player evaluation, as the movie shows, but the way the traditional scouts are outright ridiculed is absurd.

Nov-06-12  Travis Bickle: Even if it was a completely fictious movie, Moneyball is a fresh, engaging film about Major League Baseball with a very strong performance by Brad Pitt, who was nominated for best Actor!
Nov-06-12  Jim Bartle: I agree it's a well-made, entertaining movie. I just wish it weren't so deceptive.

I haven't read the book, but I hear its treatment of manager Art Howe and other teams' GMs is even rougher than in the movie. I think Howe is made out to be a rubber stamp, a nothing, but in the movie he shows real backbone pushing back against Beane.

Like the Lions' chances against the Vikings, but it could well be a harbinger for the rest of the season.

Wow. That's pretty outrageous. On the other hand, that's movies. Lawrence of Arabia is one of the greatest films ever, but its portrayal of the political (and even military) aspects of the war is sixth-grade stuff.

Phony Benoni: Sounds like Springtime in Chicago, Travis!

Lions' season is may be over as far as the playoffs are concerned. Being 4-5 isn't that hopeless, but look at their schedule: Green Bay, Houston, Indianapolis, @Green Bay, @Arizona, Atlanta, Chicago. Going 8-8 will be an accomplishment from here, and 9-7 would need a lot of breaks.

Let's get optimistic. They should be able to beat Indy at home and Arizona on the road. The Houston game is Thanksgiving Day, so they may have a chance on that account. You'd hope they could split with Green Bay. And they've got Chicago indoors in the last week, so the Bears might not realize it's a football game.

Nah. Be happy with 8-8. And with the NHL going off their own fiscal cliff and the Pistons sitting on an 0-6 start ... I may not be around here often until Spring Training.
