Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Nov-17-12  Shams: Stanford and Oregon heading to overtime. I guess I'd like to see the Ducks win a championship. They wouldn't beat Alabama but I think they could take Notre Dame.
Nov-17-12  Jim Bartle: Oregon loses in overtime. Kansas State gets wiped out by Baylor.

Who knows? Oregon may still play Alabama, just not in the national championship game.

Notre Dame is still undefeated, having won one close game after another.

Nov-17-12  Shams: <JB> Finally, Stanford slows down Oregon. Great game.

After the game the USC AD said Kiffin will be back. We'll see.

Bowie Kuhn stopped a trade of Vida Blue to the Reds. For no particular reason.

Nov-18-12  Jim Bartle: Kuhn tried to set a limit of $400,000 in cash for any trade, and Cincinnati was going to pay $1.75 million to Oakland. And he said adding Blue would upset the competitive balance. I don't see the sense.

And then Oakland traded Blue to SF, for about six players, none of whom were doing anything for the Giants or would do much for the A's. The Giants got a whole lot better and challenged for the division title for the first time in years, with Blue winning 18 games. (Jack Clark also had his first big year.)

And that didn't affect the competitive balance?

I'm a lifelong Giants fan, but I've always admired the Reds, and liked it when they had that great team.

Nov-18-12  hangingenprise: phony: if you see a bear head rooting for the lions you know it is your pal travis.

sounds like, if he is eligible to be drafted, you would like to see austin in a lions uniform, since the lions could use a good running back.

Nov-18-12  hangingenprise: traiders will get hammered again today.
sigh
Nov-18-12  Jim Bartle: Raiders playing New Orleans. Yikes! Chalk up another loss.

They went to the Super Bowl in 2004, got clobbered, and have been terrible ever since. Having the #1 pick in the draft and taking JaMarcus Russell didn't help. (Not Calvin Johnson, Derrelle Revis or Adrian Peterson.)

Chicago at San Fran on Monday Night. (whole bunch of people will be callin' in sick on Tuesday, or just simply take the whole week off. Thanksgivin', ya know... =)

Then Thursday 3 games, followed by Notre Dame at USC, Tree at UCLA. Leafs are turning yellow/brown, air is getting crisp, wonderful time of year.

Nov-18-12  Jim Bartle: I've followed Stanford football since the 60s, and one thing consistent over the years has been that they often play a bad game following a big win. (Also before a really big game, such as USC.) So they better be ready for UCLA.

Phony Benoni: <hangingenprise> The funny thing about Tavon Austin's 344 yards rushing is that he's <not> a running back! He's been a receiver/kick returner, and only played this game in the backfield because West Virginia was trying to upgrade a poor running game.

He's only 5'9" and 175 lbs, so he'd probably be a Devin Hester type if he turned pro. Not that the Lions couldn't use a good kick returner.

WannaBe: Current Standing in the Pac-12:

http://espn.go.com/college-football...

Here is an interesting scenario. If UCLA should defeat The Tree. <AND> Beavers defeat the Ducks, UCLA and Stanford would play for the Pac-12 Championship at Rose Bowl.

In the South Division, it's UCLA (6-2), who have already clinched. In the North, both Ducks and Tree are 7-1, with Beavers at 6-2.

By virtual of tie-break, (Stanford have defeated both Oregon schools) if UCLA wins, it would have the tie-break over Stanford, and host!!

Same two teams, same stadium, back-to-back weekend. How you like them apples?!
