Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

WannaBe: I think we all need at least one rubber brick, for as much sports we all watch. =)

Hey, <OCF>, what kind of reception do you think C. Palmer will get on the return to Cincy trip?

I've already chalked it up as another loss for the Traiders.

OhioChessFan: I don't think it will be a big deal. He didn't leave on good terms, but people sort of agree with his position Mike Brown didn't have the good of the team at heart. I was very glad to see him leave, since he had a huge contract and minimal skills. I simply can't believe the Raiders gave up anything for him.

I thought Palmer was inexplicably overrated, and agreed with Warren Sapp that he never did anything to justify his elite reputation.

Oh yeah, have you thought again about Notre Dame being the "only" undefeated college team?

WannaBe: <OCF> Yeah, it's blowning my mind on who to root for this weekend, I dislike both 'SC and ND...

Unfortunately OSU is not eligible for postseason play...

Thank goodness the referee got the safety call correct, bring back the replacements, I say.

Nov-20-12  hangingenprise: ocf: the nati will cheer the traiders on game day. look what they got in return for an overrated qb. i have given up on the traiders. they make ridiculous trades and draft picks. mcfadden has not done anything and he was the fifth pick overall. he is injury prone.

From what I understand he was trying to run Charley Finley out of baseball.

Nov-20-12  Jim Bartle: Yes, KP, I've seen that photo. Don't know the photographer. The resolution is incredible, of course, but I wish he'd waited for a better moment to take the picture. It's nothing special beyond the high resolution, similar to a million photos taken over the years.

WannaBe: UCLA clinched 3rd place at MSG. Butler is putting on a world of hurt on UNC.

Makes one wonder what was the worst home loss for UNC against unranked opponent. (Butler is not ranked).

  jessicafischerqueen: Hello!

I was hoping you could tell me why this collection is still on queue?

Game Collection: All Russian Amateur (St. Petersburg, 1909)

This is what I am building: Game Collection: Alekhine Tournament Metacollection

And that will in turn go inside this collection: Game Collection: Alekhine: Chess Biography

More introductory text will be added. Both collections will be linked in my documentary on <Alekhine> if I ever finish it.

Also, I'll be adding historical background information in the kibbutzing section of each tournament that gets made "official."

Thanks for the past, present, and future for your invaluable work, and that of the "Big Three" and all the others who spent so much time and hard work to collect and present this data.

jessicafischerqueen: Ah forgot to ask about Whiteshark's collection here:

Game Collection: 99_Hamburg 1910

Is there a problem with this collection that is delaying its promotion?

Nov-21-12  Benzol: <Jess> It seems that the tournament still needs some work. The Tarrasch game from round 13 listed in the introduction is still missing. A Speijer vs Duras, 1910 has had a correction submitted but apparently nothing has been done to fix this game yet.

jessicafischerqueen: <Benzol> aha thanks so much for that valuable information. Is the <Tarrasch> game missing forever, or has it just not been submitted?

If the game is "missing for real," what criterion will the panel use to judge whether or not to promote the collection or not? I notice there are already some promotions that have missing games, presumably gone forever.

jessicafischerqueen: Well since I'm already here irritating people today, I'm assuming there is no games collection for the <All-Russian Masters Tournament of 1914>? I have terrible search skills for finding games collections. Has it really not been done by someone already?
Nov-21-12  Benzol: <Jess> This is the Tarrasch game Koehnlein vs Tarrasch, 1910 It just hasn't been placed in the collection yet. I'm afraid I don't know much about <The All-Russian Masters Tournament of 1914>.
Nov-21-12  crawfb5: <Jess> If it's missing forever, that's fine; it is what it is. If games haven't been submitted, or certain types of corrections (that require real admins to fix) haven't been processed, there would be reluctance to vote the collection in yet.

The easiest way to check for a game collection is to locate a few games from the tournament and look at the bottom of the game pages to see what collections the games are in.

Phony Benoni: <JFQ> First, I hope everyone can show a little patience about this. We are still working out the bugs in a new process.

The voting process to elevate a collection into a historical tournament page requires five aye votes from Game Editors, and only five collections can be in the voting process at any one time. Considering different schedules--not to mention time zones--this is not going to be a rapid process.

Specifically, Game Collection: All Russian Amateur (St. Petersburg, 1909) was waiting for a submitted game to be added to the database. We are holding off in cases like this because it will be difficult to add new games to the Historical Page; just adding them to the old collection won't do the trick. The game has now been added, and I just nominated the collection.

This collection also has some missing games. If they appear to be hopelessly lost, we will generally go ahead and nominate the collection. For example, USSR Championship (1920).

As for <All-Russian Masters Tournament of 1914>, you main problem is that most of our games from this tournament are dated 1913; for example, S F Lebedev vs Alekhine, 1913. This is not a mistake, but a result of the Julian/Gregorian calendar snafu. The tournament began at the beginning of 1914 using the Gregorian calendar. However, the Julian calendar was in use in Russia at the time, which ran 13 days earlier and put the beginning of the tournament in 1913; hence, many of the games are dated 1913. It's a mess, and nobody has gotten around to straightening it out as yet.

Finally, there is as yet no systematic process for nominating collections, and no agendas. If a specific request is made, we will try to honor it. There are just so many tournament collections out there that it's going to take a while.

Most of these are ready to go:

jessicafischerqueen: <Big> Thanks very much, and jinx. I just decided this morning to start by collecting <Alekhine's> games from that event and getting them corrected. After that, I will try to see if I'm able to reconstruct the entire tournament accurately from the source material I have at hand. I will get back to you after work today in your forum.
