Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

OhioChessFan: <hanging> Besides Terry Bradshaw, Carson Palmer is the most overrated QB there ever was. I can't believe a team gave anything for him, much less a first round pick and more.
Nov-26-12  Jim Bartle: I don't know much about Palmer, except that the SF papers and Sports Illustrated both showed that the Raiders paid way more for Palmer than they would have paid a year before. They paid first-round choices when he was available for something like 3rd-rounders a year before.

I thought Terry Bradshaw became a pretty great quarterback, though. He did win four Super Bowls, after all.

I'll say who I think is the most underrated, historically: Roger Staubach.

OhioChessFan: Bradshaw is the epitome of a QB getting too much credit for SB victories. Everyone says defense wins championships, then gives all the credit to the offense. Without looking, take a guess at Bradshaw's career QB rating.
Nov-26-12  Jim Bartle: Don't know, don't even know how to evaluate ratings very well. I know Bradshaw was not very good his first three years or so, so maybe that drags him down.

But as far as credit for the Pittsburgh dynasty in the 70s, I will agree that the defense deserves most of the credit.

I don't agree that Palmer is overrated. Before he got hurt he was a good QB for a historically putrid franchise. After he got hurt, well... Obviously the Raiders made an incredibly stupid trade for him after he was washed up, but that doesn't take away from what he accomplished when he was younger and healthier.

Bradshaw is tough to evaluate. Genuinely awful his first few years. Up and down in the middle of his career, and they certainly had a great defense + Harris and Bleier. On the other hand, every time he got hurt (which happened a lot) it seems like the Steelers went to hell. Bradshaw was one of the best passers in the game by the time of the Steelers' Super Bowl XIII and XIV teams...Harris was nothing special by the end of the 70s.

Phony Benoni: Hey, <Travis>, Bears definitely looked almost as good yesterday as the Packers looked bad. Probably neither extreme will last. But it seems likely the Giants are the class of the NFC.

49ers, I fear, may fall under the spell of the current phenom, Colin Don't-Even-Try-To-Spell-Ick. They may regret benching Alex Smith sooner than they think.

Nobody seems to trust the Falcons, including the Falcons.

As for the Lions, the best I can say is that they're not mathematically eliminated and, considering the way math is taught in Detroit, may thus still have a chance. This team has the talent, but they need to mature. Top to bottom. On the field and off. Losing a game because your head coach throws a challenge flag is so Old Lions that I'm really getting concerned.

Nov-26-12  Jim Bartle: Bradshaw may not be one of the best ten ever, but he sure was better than a lot of top five picks in the draft: Couch, Leaf, Akili Smith, Spurrier, Jeff George, Vince Young, David Carr, Harrington, Phipps, Heath Shuler, Schlichter (!), JaMarcus Russell.

All terrible.

Nov-26-12  hangingenprise: <wannabe> and here i thought you would be on the sideline as an assistant coach to coach mora, coaching players how not to run into individuals of the stanford band. instead you will be coaching magnus on the intricacies of the wannabe gambit! you be the man!!
Nov-26-12  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> Hey Phony, I think you have to respect the Giants as they are the reigning Superbowl Champs, but them 49ers are the real deal. I agree Harbaugh may have created a dilemma by switching QB's due to an injury.

P.S. If your Lions tighten up on defense you guys have a shot.

Nov-26-12  hangingenprise: wannabe: i hate to say it and it makes me ill...but i am not counting out the bruins to win the game. i think mora just called some "regular" offensive plays and he has "another" play book that the bruins have been practicing. of course the player have to make the plays!?
Nov-26-12  Mrs. Alekhine: Hello!

With regard to this event: Game Collection: All Russian Masters Tournament 1914

All of your Round dates agree with <Skinner and Verhoeven> except this one:

Round 14 (25 January 1914)
118 Lowcki-Bogoljubov
119 Alapin-Znosko-Borovsky
120 Alekhine-Evenson
121 Elyashov-Lebedev
122 Flamberg-Gregory, 123 Taubenhaus-Freymann
124 Salwe-Nimzowitsch
125 Levitsky-Smorodsky
126 Evtifeev-Levenfish

<Skinner and Verhoeven> just say "January" for this round, no other date on it.

Would you please tell me your source for the round dates and pairings? Then I can list it in the intro of the games collection.

Phony Benoni: Bradshaw would never qualify as a truly masterful quarterback. Too much of a Favre for that. I can remember some of those throws he used to make. Made the toss on the Immaculate Reception look like a safe dump-off to the running back.

But he had that running game and that defense, and was able to suppress his own wild tendencies enough to lead a team to victory. Because, all being said, he was a leader and a winner.

Here's a hypothetical question for current days. You've got a championship caliber team ready, and all you need is a quarterback. You have two choices: Peyton Manning or Eli Manning. Which? I think there's a good argument for taking Eli.

By the way, in looking up Bradshaw's record I noticed that, before Joe Montana in 1989, only one quarterback in history had a passer rating over 110 for an entire season. Care to guess? Your clue: he was once nearly decapitated by Alex Karras.

OhioChessFan: Bradshaw had a HOF running back, HOF receivers, HOF linemen, HOF defense, and still managed a career passer rating of 70. But <he> won 4 SB's. Total myth.

I take Peyton. It's not even close.

Nov-26-12  Jim Bartle: I think Peyton Manning is far superior to Eli (and Bradshaw as well).

I think the quarterback with the highest rating that Karras nearly decapitated was one of the Lions' own QBs, but I'm not sure which won. I think he was really upset after a loss.

Nov-26-12  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, speaking of Alex Karas, he got in a fight with wrestler Dick The Bruiser, (Richard Afflis), who once played for The Green Bay Packers. Dick The Bruiser was known as 'The World's Most Dangerous Wrestler'! The Bruiser recieved stitches from the bar fight against Karas. ; P
