Sep-22-15
 | | WannaBe: About 3 hours ago, A's announced Zito will start Saturday v Hudson, the number of available tix on StubHub halved in an hour. My seats that was listed for $90 got sold at 7PM. |

 | | WannaBe: Blue Birds tie the game at 3, bottom ninth on a solo shot!! |
|
Sep-22-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Just watched highlight of Chicago's first hit in the 9th. Almost no crawd noise, and nothing but grumbles after the hit. Sad. |
|
Sep-22-15
 | | Penguincw: Blue Jays lose a thriller, 6-4 to New York in 10. :( Division lead down to 2.5 games, Minnesota won, so Toronto's postseason magic number remains at 4. |
|

 | | Tabanus: Samuel Heyman Shapiro He could perhaps be the great-grandfather of Mark Shapiro, former President of the Cleveland Indians! (Unlikely though, his children were girls.) |

 | | perfidious: <pgp....In 1962 Bob Buhl, in 70 at-bats, was hitless. Zero base hits. How that is even possible, I can't imagine...> There was a baseball monthly which named Buhl as one of the worst-hitting pitchers in history in a piece back in 1974. |

 | | Tabanus: <Hokenson, H (WY) 1912, 195> <PB> Do you have him from Wyoming? I have Grand Forks ND in 1915. Winnipeg Tribune has H. Hokensen of Minneapolis in 1912 (Aug 20). |
|
Sep-23-15
 | | WannaBe: <Tabanus> You know who would know info on that? <Resignation Trap>. Man I miss him. =( |

 | | WannaBe: Here's another weird coincidence involving Yogi:
<The rift ended in 1999, when Steinbrenner initiated a reconciliation and honored Berra with a Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium on July 18. On that day, Berra was also reunited with Don Larsen, whose perfect game in the 1956 World Series Berra had caught. Larsen threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Berra, and to make the day complete, Yankees starter David Cone threw a perfect game against the Montreal Expos.> http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9... Mustta been Deja vu all over again. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Possible clinches today:
Pittsburg clinches WC with a win or a San Francisco loss. Eliminations: Detroit eliminated with Loss and Houston win. Baltimore eliminated in Division with loss or Toronto win Cleveland eliminated in division with a loss or Kansas City. win. |
|
| Sep-23-15 | | playground player: Yogi Berra, 1950--572 at bats... 12 strikeouts. Twelve! |
|
Sep-23-15
 | | Phony Benoni: <Tabanaus> This whole Hokensen/Hokenson mess is more complicated than I thought, and I need to look at it more carefully. These facts are emerging:
1) The person or persons played in the Western Championships of 1912 and 1915. 2) The 1912 player is probably from Fort Russell, Wyoming, or at least Wyoming. The 1915 player is from Grand Forks, North Dakota. 3) Their results are similar.
4) Both the forms of name (Hokenson and Hokensen) are used in multiple sources from each year. I feel pretty certain they are the same player. I had just about decided that "Hokensen" was correct and changed it everywhere except the "Help!" page. |
|
Sep-23-15
 | | Tabanus: <PB> Have a look again. I just updated with all I have. Yes I'm now pretty sure it's the same man, Helge and Harry. H Hokensen |
|
Sep-23-15
 | | Penguincw: <HUGE> wins for the Blue Jays, as they down the Bronx Bombers 4-0. Division number down to 8, 4 to make the postseason. They're also breathing down KC's neck for home field advantage throughout the postseason. |
|
Sep-23-15
 | | Penguincw: On a more somber note, R.I.P. Yogi Berra. :( Whether or not you love or hate the Yankees, Yogi Berra is one you have to tip your cap to. He will be forever remembered for his contributions on and off the field. Him and Johnny Bench are the 2 greatest catchers to ever play the game of baseball. |
|
| Sep-23-15 | | Jim Bartle: <Bench and Berra>
I have read rankings which put Mickey Cochrane up with those two. |
|
| Sep-24-15 | | Jim Bartle: Roger Angell is oddly unconvincing in his Berra obit. It does have one line probably only he could have written: "I remember Yogi on an April morning in 1946..."
He also has a line which I think has a mistake, rare in both Angell and the New Yorker: "The Yanks played in eight World Series between 1949 and 1957, facing the Dodgers five times and the Giants twice..." The Yankees played the Giants in 1951. What other year did they play? |
|
Sep-24-15
 | | OhioChessFan: It was Joe Garagiola who started the Yogi Myth, putting words in Yogi's mouth that he never said. Jim Bouton in particular was adamant that Yogi really wasn't a very funny person. I can say his AFLAC commercial didn't come off as funny at all. |
|
Sep-24-15
 | | WannaBe: File this under: "How Ya Like Them Apples?"
Pittsburgh Pirates, have clinched at least Wild Card spot, are 4 behind St.L, and 3 in front of Chicago. This weekend, Pittsburgh will be in Wrigley (3 games) then starting Monday, host St.L (3). Wonder what the crowd will be like if Pitt is only 3 games out, or 2 games out. I think even watching the game on TV would require ear-plugs. Tie-breaker scenarios: (Warning!! Advanced Ph.D. from MIT in Quantum Astro-Physics required to understand this article, especially the AL 4-way tie) http://espn.go.com/blog/jayson-star... |
|
Sep-24-15
 | | WannaBe: Okay, it's possible, so...
Yankees goes on a losing streak, NYY, HOU, MIN, LAA all end up tied for the 2 WC spot. (TOR, TEX, KC wins East, Central, and West) And I want to see Manfred & J. Stark's heads explode trying to explain to us what the match-up & home field & TV schedule will all work out. (I love ya Jayson, but it will be funny as heck watching you, Tim Kurkjian and Buster Olney on TV debating about this...) |
|
Sep-24-15
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> Oh, it could be even more fun than that. Cleveland could conceivably break into The Big Tie, but they would have to play off a postponed game with Detroit for which there is no room on the regular schedule. |
