Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Mar-14-16  Party Animal: Phony, Bears GM Ryan Pace just pulled the trigger again! They signed massive DE Akiem Nicks from New England. Akiem weighs in at 325 & is 6'5" tall. He looks like a goodie! It looks like Chicago & Detroit were in the bidding for Hicks.

P.S. Phony I think this will be my last update as it looks like I'm bad for business. Ever since I showed up in your forum Bartle & the Rabbit have fled from Dodge city.

WannaBe: <OTD: The first pro baseball team

On this date in 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings become the first professional baseball team. They won their inaugural game 41-7.>

Later that season they would go on to defeat Cincinnati Bengals to win the Super Bowl.

Mar-15-16  Jim Bartle: <OTD: The first pro baseball team On this date in 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings become the first professional baseball team. They won their inaugural game 41-7.>

Manager Stonewall Anderson called in Rowdy Eastwick to pitch the eighth and ninth, earning the first save in baseball history.

Third baseman Rose had bet the over at 47 runs and only won because of his ninth inning double.

Mar-18-16  Jim Bartle: If they're not going to play each other...

But you never know. In early 1999 Andre Agassi and his coach caught up with Andrei Medvedev, who was depressed over a bad loss, playing terribly and wanted to quit.

So Agassi bucked him up, gave him advice. Two months later somehow they both reached the final of the French Open and Medvedev has clearly taken Agassi's lessons to heart, rolling through the first two sets. With the help of a rain delay Agassi came back but his good intentions almost cost him.

OhioChessFan: <pp: <Esteemed Baseball Mavens> With sports statistics getting more and more belabored and trivial, I'd like to observe that Ernie Lombardi holds the record for most baseballs--seven--held in one hand. >

I saw Johnny Bench do it on TV once when an announcer asked him to. Here's a pic of him doing it:

You can google other pics of the feat.

Mar-20-16  Jim Bartle: I was watching a game from the 1972 Series, with Don Gullett pitching. He threw very hard and had good control. Why did was his career cut short? Arm trouble?

OhioChessFan: Gullett went to the Yankees in 77, blew out his shoulder in 78, and was done.
Mar-21-16  Jim Bartle: Very impressive pitcher in any case. I love to watch hard throwers who throw over the top, the way John Smoltz did early in his career.

Look at about 18:40 of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52Y...

Eric Davis dives to make a catch. He has it, then as he holds his glove up to show he has it the ball flips out, due to pain from the fall.

Looks like a catch to me.

Mar-21-16  Jim Bartle: Gullett went 91-44 with Cincinnati, including 26-7 with a 3.00 ERA in 1975 and 1976. That's pretty great even with 5 runs a game to work with.

He had only 44 starts those two years, so I guess he was injured some of the time.

Phony Benoni: In 1975-1977, Gulltee generally pitched every five-six days, but missed four-eight consecutive weeks in the second half of the season. After each time off period he came back as effective as before, but when that happens repeatedly it spells trouble.

Mar-25-16  Schach and Awe: On Sep 5, 2009 you wrote 'Phony Benoni: A humorously weird game, full of unorthodox situations. This position, after White's 44th move, features Alekhine's Gun and Horwitz Bishops at the same time: I've got to come up with a pun for it.' in the Romanovsky vs Viner game, today's GotD. It may not be a pun, nor punny, but how does 'Alekhine's gun and Howitzer Bishops' sound ?

I then discovered that you have already included it in your Game Collection: US Open 1938, Boston = 39th ACF Congress.

Would you mind if I encroached?
