Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Dude, isn't Julio a bit old to be playing baseball?

Mar-29-16  Party Animal: Hey Phony, what do you think of your Tigers this up coming season?

My Cubs don't have enough starting pitching... Maybe they'll make a deal if they're in the thick of the race in July.

Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> Not very confident about the Tigers. A couple of the older players who were hurt last year are hurt again, and the bullpen seems to still be an issue. Almost every game, they jump off to a 6-0 lead and wind up winning 6-5.
Mar-29-16  Jim Bartle: <Dude, isn't Julio a bit old to be playing baseball?>

It's Enrique. He's 40.

Mar-30-16  Deus Ex Alekhina: I wonder how John King used Books in Detroit makes money; they have a gigantic warehouse of inventory, 6 or 7 floors, every inch of space groaning with used books, perhaps more than one million books on the shelves, plus the overhead of heating that place. A little too pricey for me, but I still like to go in & look.

Apr-01-16  luftforlife: Great to see baseball in Montreal once more.

The Red Sox show signs of life. Hanley Ramirez has proved surprisingly adaptive to first base. Travis Shaw has suitably and respectably displaced the sagging Pablo Sandoval at third. The center-fielder legendary hurler Dennis Eckersley lovably dubs "LBJ" -- Jackie Bradley Jr. -- made yet another outstanding assist with a superb throw-out at second. The knuckler Steven Wright (yes, he's actual-size) has a pretty mean fastball. Backup catcher Sandy Leon continue to impress with strong and swift pick-off moves to second and third. Blake Swihart is also developing well behind the dish.

The terrific troika of Betts, Bogaerts, and Bradley, together with super-utility standout Brock Holt, form a nucleus for the future. Here's hoping Dustin Pedroia can stay healthy, and Carson Smith gets well soon. (Eduardo "The Telegraph" Rodriguez might as well stay on the disabled list.) David Ortiz's protracted farewell-tour may become a bit tiresome, but he's still a fearsome slugger, and he stands behind only Hall-of-Famer Harry Hooper with his three World Series rings in a Red Sox uniform.

One more Grapefruit to go, and then we "Play Ball!" for real. Good stuff! May you have a Happy Opening Day wherever you may be.

Apr-02-16  Jim Bartle: Attitudes toward beanballs have really changed since 1989: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgF...

The night before Ellis Burks had gone 3 for 5 with 2 home runs. In the first inning of this game hits Burks in the head with a fastball in the first inning (10:15)

Nobody says a word to Ryan. The umpire doesn't issue a warning. The announcers never suggest Ryan was throwing at his head, as he clearly was. They even say Burks was a little slow to pick up the pitch. A little slow to pick up a Ryan fastball.

Today at the very least the umpire would have warned both teams and Ryan possibly would have been tossed. The Sox would have been out threatening Ryan.

What most irritates me is the attitude of the announcers, simply ignoring that Ryan threw intentionally at Burks. Ridiculous.

Apr-02-16  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Who was it who described Ryan as a "baby-faced killer"?
Apr-02-16  Jim Bartle: Don't know, but he sure isn't babyfaced today. I'm surprised how old he looks today. Of course that could be because he played until he was 45, so it's surprising that a recent player looks old.
Apr-02-16  luftforlife: <playground player>: I believe that was Reggie Jackson.

<Jim Bartle>: Jerry Remy has spoken often of Nolan Ryan's propensity for headhunting. Of course the Red Sox gave as good as they got in that regard with Roger Clemens on the hill.

I didn't cotton to that aspect of the game at the time, and I'm relieved times have changed for the better.

Apr-02-16  Jim Bartle: Looking at his career, I see Ryan pitched 9 years for California, 8 years for Houston, and 5 years for Texas. I doubt many players have played so many years for three different teams.

Penguincw: Bit late, but yay, Jays win Opening Day 5-3. They are now a lifetime 21-19 on Opening Day. In seasons where the Jays won Opening Day, they've average 86-87 wins/season (in seasons where they've lost Opening Day, they average 75 wins).

In other news, first RBI of the 2016 MLB season was by a pitcher...
