Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Travis, I never bet against t he Patriots. This is because I generally want the other team to win.

Did you know I played the Marshall back in the day? That was out of necessity. You see, 1...e5 was the only move I felt comfortable with against 1.e4, but opponents kept playing the Ruy Lopez and winning a pawn in the opening. So I took up the Marshall. I still lose a pawn in the opening, but at least I'm sacrificing it!

Feb-06-17  YouRang: <Phony Benoni: Travis, I never bet against t he Patriots. This is because I generally want the other team to win.>

Yeah, I was rooting for the Falcons. After the Patriots missed that extra-point leaving the score at 28-9, I mentioned to my son that they could at least still benefit from a field goal, but they would need a pair of TDs with 2 point conversions. I didn't expect to see it happen.

The Falcons blew it on that last drive where they were in field goal range. It would have made it 31-20, practically assuring a win. But instead, they took a sack and a holding penalty, and they had to punt.

One could almost sense how big a moment that might be. As you suggest, experience may have been the difference.

Phony Benoni: Like the Yankees back in the day, the Patriots are one of those teams you might not like but have to respect for their continued run of excellence.

perfidious: Those Yankee squads at the tail end of their run from 1921-1964 would hardly have been able to maintain their hegemony if not for the Kansas City farm team, um, Athletics giving them infusions of talent, a practice which came to a merciful end once Arnold Johnson unexpectedly passed on in early 1960 and the team was sold to Charlie Finley.

Bill James once wrote of how Yankees' continued success may have been inimical to the league's fortunes as a whole.

perfidious: A while back, I posted the following here:

<The one caveat in my mind regarding Cabrera is that, formidable a hitter as he remains, his body type is one which does not age well; he will undoubtedly wind up a full-time DH before long, the question being whether he can retain enough bat speed to reach the hallowed ground of 3000 before the end comes.>

With 2519 hits through the end of 2016, my assessment above is probably pessimistic, barring that sudden end which came to old teammate Fielder.

In the end, Cabrera will be a mortal lock as a first ballot HOFer, and would be cold to get there first time out if he somehow never played another game. Whale of a resume.

saffuna: Cabrera is almost 34 and his still hitting the ball. He has 450 home runs, 1500 RBIs, and a lifetime .400 OBP. And he didn't slip much if at all last season. If he were to collapse tomorrow (Ryan Howard-style) he still would have had a brilliant career.

OhioChessFan: If you want to be blown away by the stats, look at Howard here:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/p...

.268 47 136
.251 48 146

are good for only 3.3 and 2.2 Offensive WAR?! I sometimes can't believe the numbers are right. I recall looking at Tony Gwinn and seeing him hitting .394 and an offensive WAR that year of something like 5.2. I don't think I buy that.

  WannaBe: Did not know these:

1. It's illegal to catch a ball with any thing other than your hand and/or glove. Otherwise it's a 3-base penalty. 3-base!! 7.05b

2. In case of catcher's interference (E2), the opposing manager can accept the error, or take the play on the field, (if there was one).

Kinda like football where you decline the penalty and take the play. =))
