Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Tigers 4-2 so far, and it's easy to see why. Take a look at these eye-popping stats:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/t...

One suspects these will change. Migule Cabrera, for one is not going to keep up that pace.

They've gotten by with generally strong starting pitching ;and just enough clutch hitting. The bullpen is still an arson squad.

Phony Benoni: Tigers smash out another victory, blasting four hits in a 2-1 victory over the Twins. Cabrera has one of the hits, raising his average 30 points to .125.

Not complaining. Just imagining life once they start hitting.

OhioChessFan: I texted my nephew last night "Reds will win 90 games" He came back with "Wanna bet?" I said "Sure, by June 20, 2018"

Very young although extremely talented pitching staff, along with 90 year old Broson Arroyo throwing 72 MPH fastballs. Three shutouts in 7 games? I'm guessing that pace won't continue.

saffuna: And Madison Bumgarner just couldn't maintain his 5.000 OPS. Not even one homer in his second game.

WannaBe: So, Reds are on pace to throw 69.42 shutout games...

Which raises the question, which team holds the season record for (throwing) most shutouts??

Time to look it up.

Unrelated subject don't think anyone will break Red Barrett's record. Not even Kershaw.

Penguincw: Check out the White Sox' outfield:

That's right, an outfield of all Garcia; first time ever that a team fields 3 outfielders all with the same last name. I wonder what the commentating is like...

"Fly ball, not too deep, Garcia calling off Garcia, and Garcia makes the catch."

Not true! First time that all started, but the three Alous played together in this game:

saffuna: The Giants in the 60s also sometimes had Hiller, Haller and Miller all playing at the same time, leading to this refrain:

<Cepeda runs to field the ball and Hiller covers first Howard runs to back up Hiller, Hiller crashes into Miller Miller falls, drops the ball and Conlan calls "safe!" Stu Miller throws Maury bunts

Penguincw: Yay! Jays win again, now improve to 2-9 on the season. Almost thought they'd blow it, but they hung on. For once swinging for the fences works.

The Jays become the 30th team of the season to 2 wins, and will also become the 30th team to 3 wins, when/if they reach it.

Will the other 2 (3 if you include TFC of Major League Soccer) Toronto teams win today as well?

WannaBe: Here's a minor oddity, don't see this very often:

http://www.espn.com/mlb/boxscore?ga...

Check out the line for LAD's Avilan:

1/3IP 1H 0R 0ER 1BB 1K 7 pitches, 4 for strike. I know what you are asking, how is this possible?

Did he take over a batter in mid-count for the previous pitcher? No, he did not.

Avilan entered the game with 2 outs, man on first, gave up a triple (1H), IBB next guy (now, remember, you don't need to "walk" the batter anymore, just give a sign and he takes first base). Struck out the next batter (1/3IP)

This new IBB rule will create some rather interesting box scores. I look forward to seeing something like this:

1/3IP 1H 1R 1ER 1BB 1 pitch, 1 pitch for strike. Now, figure out how this can happen!

keypusher: <saffuna: I heard on the Red Sox broadcast today that Chris Sale has the best strikeout-to-walk ratio in history for a pitcher with 1000 innings. 1250 Ks, 260 BBs. Very impressive, I had no idea. Next on the list are Schilling, Bumgarner, Pedro, Rivera and Kershaw.

Nolan Ryan checks in at #300 at 2.04.>

Would not have guessed that all the top spots would be held by modern pitchers, but maybe I should have? I guess strikeouts have increased by more than BB over time.

Walter Johnson is 2.57 (3509/1363).
